Great for him to get off the mark. Now that Rooney's out I think he's going to thrive over the next few weeks.

Need to use him more often, mad quality.

He's been here for 2 games so far and with his lack of pre-season games it made sense not to start him against Everton. That comment is as if we're talking about Berbatov or someone like that.

fixed it for you.

 Yours is more accurate, but I didnt want to be too harsh on Rooney.

Tbf it was a bit of a simplistic comparison. RVP was uninvolved because of his advanced position and that his runs werent utilised 100%. When Rooney gets criticised he is more involved than RVP was today but has poor involvements.

He will probably learn that he has to actively seek the ball a bit more than he did at Arsenal once he has a few more games with the rest of the team under his belt.

His ability to create space for himself with one touch is fantastic.

We're a team that creates chances for any-and-everyone when perhaps it'd be better to make RVP the target/focus of each attack (as far as possible).

He was clearly not match fit, not surprising he has played feck all in the pre-season. Showed his quality with that sensational goal.

Needs to be the man up as shown by his performance today before Rooney's introduction. He looked lost at Everton behind Rooney and the same today against Fulham once Rooney came on.

IMHO Rooney should play wide forward down the left in the David Villa role with Van Persie on the shoulder of the last defender, Kagawa in the hole and Valencia on the right of him.

We need Van Persie in positions where our creative players and wingers can find him. 40 yards from goal in some undefined role somewhere behind Wayne Rooney is going back half a dozen years for Van Persie. He's much better as a number 9 which was shown by his goal today: Keep him there.

Oh and yeah, he has to play up top.

None of this playing behind Rooney bollocks.

I don't really care that he wasn't in it much. That was more our fault than his. We've got this weird fallback plan of playing it out wide and putting in shit crosses. His goal was like being a kid again. A new star signing scoring a magical volley on his debut. fecking brilliant stuff. He should've come off for Rooney or Grace Jones rather than Shinji though, but for tactical reasons.

Must admit I was pretty stunned when he didn't come off for Rooney as he already looked very tired. Suppose at that stage though Fergie thought it'd be a great chance for him to get 90mins.

Or maybe he wanted to see the two play together. He probably didnt expect us to shit ourselves the way we did.

Thought he slotted in well. Not too fussed that he didn't have many touches, when he did they were neat and kept the attack flowing. Was good to see that he pushed up quite high and so didn't end up getting too close to Kagawa as Rooney did at times against Everton. He'll probably take a few games to adjust as we play very differently to Arsenal and with us using the wings more.

Brilliant goal but he started looking tired in the first half and I guess that's to be expected with his lack of a pre season.

Great goal but apart from that not much into the game.

I think that is what you should expect from him. Even for us he would score the goals but not someone to be involved for most of the game.

Not directed at you particularly mate but generally speaking what are strikers mean to do other than score?

We have this discussion a lot on this board especially when it comes to Chicharito and there seems to be some sense that a striker should be 'involved' somehow.

Van Persie did move about a bit but really his aim was to find space and get shots away and for a good reason: He was bought to score goals.

Honestly speaking how can anyone not be happy with a striker who when not in a position to score takes the ball and finds a team mate and when he is in a position to score bursts the net?

If you need a striker to "bring people into the game" it shows there's a deficiency in your team, which is what Fergie recognised and remedied by buying Kagawa from Dortmund.

Van Persie and pretty much every number 9 on the planet does their business in the 18 yard box and so long as he keeps scoring goals like he did today I've got no complaints with "the rest of his game".

TBF its not really his fault that he not providing enough to the play outside the box. When he was at Arsenal, he would drift to the flanks to support the play. Now he has young and Valencia, both of whom are players who loves to hug the touchline, whereas Arsenal plays attacking midfielders on the flanks who are comfortable coming into the center.

It will take some time for him to adjust to our play and for Fergie to find a fixed role for him, but he will get there eventually. Players like Van Persie adds more than he subtracts.

I'm not disagreeing but people think otherwise of RvP, he was a No.10 and now a proper No.9 unlike someone like Rooney who likes to always be involved. RvP isn't there to start or play a part in moves, he is there to finish them off.

I had this debate with non-Arsenal fans who seemed to think RvP was the hub of our general play but he never was.

So under utilized its untrue.

I think this is a matter of utilising central field a bit more than we are used to. The last two seasons we've been overwhelmingly reliant on our flanks to produce goal-scoring chances. A bit of variety in the build up should see RVP being more involved than we saw today.

It would be nice if we stopped giving the ball to our wingers to pump it into the box all the time. That's where Nani would be useful as he's capable of more intricate play than just pumping it in.

I think he looked good whenever he had the ball. Scored a fantastic goal and also has great awareness and passing to set up other players.

We still are, and we shouldn't be. Every time today the ball was punted wide. Why do it when Kagawa can specialise on finding that space through the middle? Angers me, almost like it becomes a lazy tactic, "oh lets pass to Valencia, and he can cross it for the 15th time today" Really predictable.

He and Kagawa seemed baffled sometimes by their teammates' insistence on getting the ball out wide at every. single. opportunity.

Yep, you would think we had Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll in the box the amount of times we cross it aimlessly in there.

Might play a bit more through the middle when Nani plays. With Valencia and Young, that is a bit limited.. but going wide is a great option and not something we will or should stop.

Opens the pitch up and creates space in the middle too.

Takes time to gel in.. Players will start anticipating runs and movements soon enough.

I liked the fact that he stayed up top and didnt go around looking for the ball too much.

They shouldn't be surprised. It's been United's default style of play for decades, unlike their former teams.

He still doesn't look 100% sharp yet but that's understandable. Scoring a class goal on his home debut should help him a lot. We simply have no choice but to learn his movements and involve him more in our play. He will be our main striker with Rooney out for a little while.

Meanwhile Peterstorey's always so bitter...

The last two teams we put out are not the obvious first 11. Once we get our CBs back...and Rooney too, we will see what Fergie's first 11 choice will be......

I agree RVP does not look 100% yet.
