I get the feeling this picture had Van Persie in it for Arsenal and ESPN was left in a pinch, so they just threw Wenger in there, as he's the only well known person left associated with Arsenal.

Whilst I was hoping we would strengthen in the middle as well (and I still think we will get Baines for full back duty) , I think with the two main signings of the summer Fergie is looking for a different way.

The majority of our games are played on the front foot against teams who are really playing for a draw at best, the quality we have in the front 4 , both wingers and forwards plus Kagawa, suggests to me the plan is simply to steamroller most of the opposition, and go 451 against decent opposition using numbers in the middle in place of specialised positional players.

For the vast majority of the season, Carrick as a lone deep lying mid is perfectly adequate, games against 3 or 4 other teams in the league and the champions league campaign are the only real exceptions.

With Cleverley/Carrick/Scholes/Anderson plus a chance of a return for Darren Fletcher at some point, and for the majority of games all competing for two positions in the starting line up, is not necessarily the same problem we had last year.

Kagawa and Van Persie in the squad changes the formation and playstyle of the team to the point where the lack of a specialised DM may not be as galringly obvious this time.

I agree with that. He is going to help in all games, especially those tight ones. As you say, i think Fergie will stick with 451 and Van Persie will probably be the front man.

I still think we need to strenghthen in midfield, especially for the latter stages of the CL. Though we should probably think about getting out the group first!!!

They're reasonable concerns. He's a fantastic player though. Which outweighs the concerns and then some. IMHO.

Imagine if Citeh had got him; we'd be shitting ourselves.

He's an aboslutely fantastic signing who's been performing year after year despite injuries. Fergie's not going to play in him more than 1x p.w. and since Wenger adopted that strategy with him he hasn't been injured once I think. We now have a fantastic pool of strikers to pick from, I would say the best in the world at this moment.

Well...that is enough excitement for the day. I'm really amazed and delighted that Fergie and Gill pulled this off. Ok, so yes there are two other areas of the team that need to be looked at, but when a player of this calibre becomes available but not only that, WANTS to come to united...you can't ignore it, you've got to take it. I reckon the younger players are also going to learn so much off this guy which is such an added bonues, plus rooney can share the load, so to speak...

.....the only thing to put a dampner on all this.......is if we go and lose to Everton on monday

What the feck is that shit? I could do a better job in 20 minutes using MS Paint '95.

And why the Euros instead of pound notes? gimptards.

I think we'll play Valencia more and more as a RB, and play something resembling a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3.

Van Persie, Rooney and one of Nani/Young/Welbeck as the front three. Carrick/Cleverley with Kagawa in front of them. Val at RB.

So basically:

De Gea
Valencia-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra
Carrick-Cleverley
Nani-Kagawa-Rooney
RVP

With all the front players interchanging all the time.

RVP for instance loves peeling off to the left in behind the defence.

Rooney should be central if you're picking both him and Kagawa. I think a younger Rooney would work on the wing, but not now.

I guess Valencia will get a number of games at right back due to injuries. However, I hope he's not made to play there semi permanently. He was our best player in his natural position last season.

Well, yeah, nominally Kagawa would start out wide. But all of Nani, Rooney and RvP would drift out there from time to time, at least that's what I think.

I think Ferguson is trying to recreate the sort of fluid, talented front three we had in Ronaldo/Rooney/Tevez, which was somewhat upset by the acquisition of a more rigid Berbatov position-wise, and a hug-the-line winger in Valencia(who's been fantastic for us btw.) So I think he's trying to get back that way of playing, with Kagawa linking the midfield and the attack(or Rooney).

I know, I know. I'm just speculating as to what Fergie's thinking.

Assembling these attacking players only for them to take turns sitting out matches seems strange to me. With the above system, Welbeck would get his fair share of games, Kagawa would be incorporated, and both Hernandez, Young and even Berbatov could slot into certain positions within that setup.

Playing Valencia would mean not playing one of Kagawa, Nani, Rooney or RvP - arguably our four most talented and creative players.

The flip side of the argument is of course this: With all that creativity, might be we need a solid performer who does the business every time, and is selfless and a bit more consistant productivity wise?

As you say though, I'm sure he will not play at RB all season. I just see Fergie playing him more there this season, due to our options attacking wise, and our lack of full back wise.

As an aside - do you think Rafael could partly be intended as cover for Evra this season? I mean, we've got options at RB in Val, Jones and Smalling, but no real cover for Evra. If Fabio could play there, I'm sure Rafael could do decently enough. In fact I seem to remember him play there once or twice.

What say the Caf?

Rafael can obviously play left back. However margins are very fine in top level professional football. A minor mistake due to unfamiliarity can be costly. I'd rather play Giggs with his experience or Evans, who's played a few games in that position.

I know. It's just surreal.

I just can't shake the feeling this is all a dream, and I'll soon wake up to a Fergie press conference saying he'll put confidence in Bebe as our main striker this season.

He'll never be a Man Utd player and he's disgraced himself at Arsenal the silly cnut.

Looks good. So many options this year! Shit, we could even play Kagawa in midfield and manage to get all of Welbeck, Nani, Kagawa, Rooney, Van Persie and Valencia playing at the same time....

-----------De Gea----------
Valencia-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra
------Carrick-Kagawa-----
Welbeck--Rooney-----Nani---
-----------Van Persie--------

We still don't actually know how good a midfielder Kagawa will be if he is to play there, but assuming he's a decent one (not an unreasonable assumption, I'm guessing - he looked alright in the Hannover game) we could play something like this at some point.

Hush now peter, things may seem better in a few days. Maybe not though as he'll probably bang a couple past Everton. For United. Oh yes you cnut.

Peter. Remember that time United signed Van Persie from Arsenal. That was a classic wasn't it?

He could have been a legend at Arsenal, feted like Bergkamp until the end of his days. Instead he'll just be a another no-mark cnut like Berbatov who played for Man Utd for a couple of years.

I bet Berbatov is reasonably happy with his two league titles and his top scorer title - as opposed to continuing at Spurs for those years.

Van Persie will be smiling like a cheshire cat once the big pot is in the bag come may, Pete.

You won't. I'll buy you a pint, though.

He was so happy to join us, did you see his beautiful smile when he was touching our beautiful shirt? He saw the future Pete, he saw the future.

A legend to who?

A load of Nigels from North London who prefer cricket to football.

He's joined a proper football club now Pete.

Bergkamp had success and medals at least.

Pretty sure he saw success.

That was missing at Arsenal.

Take the night off Pete. Glass of wine, good movie, drink it all away mon ami.
