Let's not forget, as good as that duo was in 99, it was often broken up in order to play Nicky.

Because even back then Scholes was a massive defensive liability.

Which brings us back to 2012...and anytime Scholes is in a two man midfield. :annoyed:

Seriously, why is this place not buzzing?!! Whats happened to Redcafe?

The place went nuts over Berbatov a few years ago, and now we've signed a better player, from an actual (sort of) rival, and its like a morgue in here!

People still don't want him. It's silly. It's an already established world class player, and we've actually managed to fight off City for his signature.

I reckon it's because we won't feel that it's truly happening until he passes the medical & actually signs.

The major difference between now and then is that nowadays we tend to keep more possession and hence less tackling is required.

Our possession play was awful last season.

Valencia's crossing and distribution to RVP will be

Until it happens, I'm still expecting Mancini & Vieira to pull up on a tandem and grab Robin.

We wont be happy until we buy a CM

@ Devilton

Although, you might get banned for that :nervous:

Sign of the times, RVP signs and not a single picture of a muppet in this thread. :(

"In 1999 I had Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the four best strikers in Europe. We are going towards that now with Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Robin, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa.

fecking hell, poor Berba! Fergie treats him like an ex who's always on the scene but never gets so much as a 'how are you?'.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Keeping more possession doesn't decrease the defensive frailty that a 2 man midfield has. In fact these days with most teams overloading the midfield it's even more important to have 2 strong defensive midfielders if you do play a traditional 442 (as we used to do in 99).

Maybe The Berb is joining Roxy Music or something, chief.

Just a heads up, I got an infraction earlier for an image I posted. Might want to move it to the 50k thread.

I was actually going to ask, how prolific is RVP at heading? Any statistics flying about on how much of his goals came from his head (and his left, right peg)?

if you rate him so much would you take him at barca?

I like Young a lot actually but it's all about system & how a player fits...I think Young has been a shrewd buy for you lot...Left sided wide players of that quality are in short supply and it widens the pitch to prevent defenses from focusing on the main prong of the attack...Kagawa will be the key, IMO, to releasing those attacks...but if they're predictable and always through the center or right, then defenses will adjust...The deadliest offenses, IMO, are the ones that are diverse

Why is Fergie listing Shinji as a striker?

Probably because he intends to play him in one of the front two positions mostly. Rooney and possibly RVP will play some games in that position behind the front man so it makes sense to group them together.

Teams will be pissing them self's bloody Rooney and RVP to deal with headache for defenders and fear!

To be honest I don't think it seems real to me yet. Every time I try to picture RVP in my mind's eye he's wearing an Arsenal shirt and scoring for Arsenal. I can't imagine him linking up in our style of play yet.

I think it is a bit like Ashley Young the Aston Villa player vs. Ashley Young the United player. I will need to see him score a few goals in the club's colours and look like a United player before it will seem real for me that Mr. Arsenal is ours.

With Tony V terrorizing one wing and Nani the other, and the option of Young falling over.

Looks like we'll be changing our style of play then with the inclusion of Kagawa and RVP (which I'm pleased about).

Loved the pre season game vs Hannover

Bet Arsene wishes he hadn't thrown away all those water bottles.

Hmm, I see your point. It does seem pretty surreal, but I'm just surprised there not much more excitement around the place.

The amount of people that moan that we never sign players at the peak of their powers, or we can't compete in the transfer market, then we go and do both, in one signing, and this place reacts with, well, not that much joy in all honesty.
