Robin van Persie | 2012-14 Performances

It's worrying sometimes the thought patterns of fans.

Last year it was all VP's so much better than Rooney, with some suggesting ridiculously parity with Ronaldo.
Now it's suddenly VP is dispensable, he's only been here 2 years etc.

Revisionism is horrible. It's behind the thinking that we have a really weak squad, when last year showed that's bollocks.

Very few people think Rooney is better than Van Persie, that poll that's somewhere on here proves that. But taking into account other factors it's understandable that people aren't upset to see RVP leave. Key here is that we've just signed Mata and most want him playing behind the striker rather than Rooney, which leaves us with two world class strikers on top wages competing for one position. Rooney's been here for longer, is younger and more versatile and has just committed his long-term future to the club. It's completely understandable that given some of Van Persie's recent statements people aren't devastated at the thought of losing him.

It isn't really. Rooney's been an utter nob and still managed to get a deal that is much too lucrative considering his actual abilities. The fact that he earns more than RVP and Suarez is almost hilarious. People want RVP to leave because he is two years older, but he is a better player. How long will it be before Rooney starts sulking again? Loyalty is truly a weird thing in football.

That fact that we might lose van Persie in the summer, but rewarded that poisonous cnut Rooney with a bumper new 300k a week contract, makes me a sad panda. If there's only room in the side for one of them, it shouldn't be the fat brat.

I agree, but Shrek gave his all to get that contract, and Moyes seems easily fooled. Now the ogre is back to his usual self and shows that he is not world class at all.

It's shit like this which makes it hard to target the post and not the poster.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Van Persie leave in the summer. I don't want to see that happen but the signs are there. De Boer has gone on record as saying he may be off.

Unfortunately, it may well be the case. Either way, I think RVP needs to show us what he can still offer. At his best he is amongst the best strikers in the world. He looks slightly out of place as of late. It would be madness selling him though.

Bit of a joke this. I will be livid if RvP leaves so early on and it would be truly ridiculous from Moyes and co to allow it to happen.

It is equally daft that we can't get a system right that brings the best out of our forward players, Rooney, van Persie, Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj etc

You know that's the difference between an average manager and a world class manager. Look at Bayern Munich, Lahm didn't want to play DM at first but Guardiola made him do it and guess what he is now brilliant at it. But now we'll probably lose our best player because Moyes can't use him properly and can't think of a system to fit them all in.

We can discuss all the problems about certain players we want, in the end the manager is what is the biggest problem.

For what it's worth I don't think it is possible that there is a system out there than can accommodate all 3 and have them playing their best. Right now the best thing would be for RVP to be sold. Mata playing off Rooney would be sensational. But RVP is a better striker than Rooney. It's just too complicated. None of them are quick enough or mobile enough to play wide either.

I'd rather have RvP up front than Rooney because he's the better striker. Rooney is great when the team are playing well but RvP has shown he can score goals when we're not like this season. Moyes lacks the required bollocks to tell Rooney where he plays.

Spot on. I'd sell Rooney this summer and build the team around RvP and Mata (ie. the better players).

Agreed, Rooney is neither our best striker nor best no.10, it beggars why we'd make The Whinetastic one our best paid player and possible captain. Fergie would have fecked him off quicker than him handing his third transfer request.

Guardiola couldn't fit Messi & Ibrahimovic into the same side, at least not well enough for both Ibrahimovic and Messi to spit their dummys out and complain, if RVP was sacrificed to restructure the team, it wouldn't just be "because Moyes is shit" sometimes player's however good they are don't mesh well.
The problem in reality is Rooney's best role is up top, or failing that probably midfield, as the no.10 he just doesn't have the creativity and movement needed, its clear from watching our disjointed performances, whereas Mata has everything you could want for that type of position, Rooney right up top would bag 30 goals a year regardless.

If RVP wanted to leave I dont think I could blame him, he signed up for Sir Alex and winning trophies, not a rebuilding project, he could just shrug his shoulders and collect his paycheck each week but however much we may hate it, sticking to his principles and asking to leave would take balls.

I'll be honest....so many players use other avenues to say what they want..whether through other players, international coaches or whatever. Of course nothing has been said by RVP, but it's so bloody obvious now he isn't happy. Frankly I'm getting really pissed off with him....and after getting his winners medal, he can go for all I care.

I'm starting to dislike RVP here now....Granted, I don't rate Moyes but, who the hell does he think he is if he throwing demands around like this?

If true of course

Who cares... Players have opinions, thats his. He wants to play good football so would you. I don't think thats him saying he's going to leave. I'm sure you've had/have plently to moan about with your Saturday/Sunday league team too.

What demands is he making? Even if he has told De Boer what is in that article then what exactly is there for him to be happy about?

Looks obvious to me that his camp has been briefing first Van Gaal and now De Boer.

These stories of him not being happy have been knocking around since pretty much the first day. No smoke without a fire and all that.

Again I maybe reading a lot into it but I think RVP's beef does not seem to be as much with Moyes but more with SAF making promises about how long he'd remain as manager when he joined.

Its funny how some posters have sharpened their knives for RVP when he's privately made it known that he's unhappy with our static, uninspiring setup. Yet when Rooney whines and hands out transfer requests left, right and centre (for which Gollum has was consequently rewarded him with a 300k contract for his troubles), then its not as big an issue.

I think there were more than a fair few who wanted Rooney pushed out the door after his last strop, rightly or wrongly, he's buckled down and been more or less our best player so far this season.
As for the contract issue, if Moyes had stood by and let him continue to run down his contract and eventually ended up somewhere like Chelsea, while we suffer on in obscurity in the coming years, I'm sure there would be a few harsh words directed at that decision, damned if you, damned if you dont.

Keep it in house! Why this stuff must be leaked is beyond me! Also, it cannot be good for the team as a whole

He has though. Is he to lie to friends or people he talks to? Is to be happy with the horrible football we've served up this season?

He did... It's them noise mates of his that decided to open their mouths. Is he only suppose to tell his wife and kids?

How about the club keeping all the 'blame the players' PR statements in house!?

If the club are putting out garbage like this...

Which they have done all season - they really can't expect to create a harmonious team spirit!

These endless statements from club old-boys have gone on pretty much all season and shouldn't be overlooked for how potentially divisive they could have been.

I wonder would Schmikes think the same if he wasnt an ambasssador for the club, he is hardly going to slate Moyes

players use different avenues to get things in the press all the time...it's a known fact. yeah, rooney did it to, the different between Rooney and RVP is that Rooney has been here a multitude of seasons..RVP just one...

Fair points, well made!....Guess I'm just frustrated

He wouldn't even have to consider it a failure if he left in the summer. He came here to work under SAF and win the Premier League - both of which he did. If he then chooses to move on because he doesn't fancy being part of a rebuilding project, then so be it. He met his aims here; time to set some new ones elsewhere.

Note, that's not how I feel about things (it's been well-noted that I'd much rather have seen Rooney shipped out last summer and kept RvP happy), but that could well be his mindset on the issue.

having said that, if he does go, Moyes might be breaking even another record. Anyone know of a top striker being bought by United who left after a season? These records are tumbling...

Not a striker, but Veron only lasted two years, and he cost more money.

Well, i think he also said he flew back with Van Persie back from Holland's match. So its not like they don't speak much.
This is just media drivel. I don't understand why in the life of me people believe this, especially when this same story happened at the start of the season and then it was watered down my both Moyes and RVP.
