Robin van Persie | 2012-14 Performances

He seemed absolutely lethargic today. Obviously strikers forget about the mistakes and move on, but a miss in the 90th minute to wrap up the game and he didn't seem bothered. I'd rather be playing Hernandez if Van Persie's going to offer competition like that. How demoralising must it be for Hernandez to be benched only to have that performance replace you?

To be fair he always looks a bit lethargic to me. Seems to be his style

He was fine in first half, but was isolated a bit and started to move wide to see more of the ball and did good, but that miss will certainly influence people's view on his performance, which wasn't bad at all.

Was shite today. His touch is normally so good and he's usually sharper than this in the final third. He was rarely in the right position and didn't look like a proper threat. That clear chance at the end summed his performance up. Hope he finds his form after the international break otherwise we'll give Hernandez or Welbeck a chance.

Think he looked tired, can't be easy coming straight back in, play a long game as the lone striker in Ukraine and then play this game. Should have done better at the end no doubt.

this 2 week break has come at the right time, we sign off win a win, and a bit of thinking time for Moyesy. If we'd not won, the pressure would have ramped up for 2 weeks.

Then when we re-commence there's 4 home games in a row.

That 89th min miss from VP was a shocker. Odd how he didn't take it onto his left foot at a better angle and shot as it sat. Would have taken a wonderful curve from the outside of his foot to score from there.

Count Orduck has got a point I think. Also the idea that Rooney doesn't like him.

Both, I think, are fairly natural things to happen. It's up to both of them to get on with it and play like they can together.

Anyone else think he might be slightly depressed? He ruined his legacy at Arsenal, uprooted his family, all to move to a club where he thought he'd win silverware. He duly did with us last season, and looked happy as a pig in shit. And then, suddenly, SAF announces his retirement and the entire reason for RvP moving to United is up in smoke. A new guy he has no connection with moves in to manager's seat, and everyone lowers their expectations to a few years of "transition". He had years of transition at Arsenal; he moved to us to win things. Suddenly his move isn't looking so wonderful.

Oddly enough this is rather similar to what I was going to post, and whilst some dismissed CO as wumming I actually think it may be the beginning of truth.

First of all its no secret his move to United was in order to win trophies, it wasn't about the money it was about getting the trophies to back up his career and legacy, which is fair enough to some extent I guess. United were better equipped to do this, especially in Europe where before the season he joined United had been in 3 out of 5 finals.

I remember hearing that he particularly wanted to work with SAF and how much he rated him as a manager and he would have had no idea that SAF planned to retire when he joined so it will have come as a shock. Moyes then makes statements hinting that United may be also rans for a little while, but are building for the future, a future that RVP wont be a part of.

Then the rumours come out about RVP not enjoying Moyes style, and the idea that RVP is actually a little bemused at what has happened after one season at United is not unfounded and certainly not just a WUM, it seems to make sense to me.

Unlike most of the posters in this thread (and, let's face it, this forum), RVP is a well-balanced, mature adult man with his priorities sorted out. I should think it's highly unlikely that he's 'depressed' because United have lost a few games.

If he's worried about not winning titles already then Noodle was right in thinking he has the wrong attitude. Given the fact he's scored 6 goals in 8 starts - more than Giroud, Aguero, Negredo, Soldado and pretty much everyone else besides Sturridge - I think you're getting a little carried away.

Some people talk about us like we are a side which is out of every cup and fighting for relegation, turning all of our star players to depression and wanting to jump ship. Would you have been saying this after RvP scored his 4 goals in 2 games at the turn of the season? No. He hasn't scored, so he's sad. Bunch of fecking spastics who come up with these thoughts.

Couldn't agree more with both of you. Alastair and Rob, I don't think the kids in this thread need your help. They're wumming themselves very effectively.

It's just wishful thinking on their part.

You can't fault the gooners for still being butthurt about his departure.

And Chelsea fans would walk through glass for an 'under-performing' RvP given their striker situation.

No-one's saying he's playing so badly that it looks like he wants out.

You can't really deny he's looking a bit unhappy though. He also looks like he's struggling for fitness.

Agreed, you can tell by the look in his eyes that he's having an existential crisis.

He hasn't yet been getting the service of last season, due to incredibly poor performance of the wingers.

Once he gets that, I can't see him not scoring. He's just too good.

Some people are gonna end up looking pretty stupid.

Is there anyone here who will claim that this is the RVP of last season?

6 goals in 8 games. So statistically he's slightly better than the RVP of last season.

And I can't agree, Pocco, that he and Rooney aren't gelling. They've been very unlucky that some excellent link-ups haven't come off. In particular, if the beautiful curling ball over the top from Rooney which RVP volleyed first time onto the bar had ended up in the net, you'd still be watching replays of it. They have an obvious understanding, it just hasn't born obvious fruit yet. But the fact that they have both scored in the same match a number of times already is always an excellent sign for a partnership.

5 goals in his first 8 games last season.

So he's doing better but he's depressed, got it.

I'm out on a limb here, but there may be a teensy, tiny chance that it's the Arsenal fans who haven't got over losing him who are depressed, rather than the Manchester United star striker who is scoring 0.75 goals a game and earning £180k a week. I think that's called projection.

His current form is surprising since it's quite widely reported he has a toe injury. I think he's been carrying it a bit longer than we think though.

Its just a suggestion, because it was well known he wanted to work with SAF and now SAF is gone. Its not beyond the realms of possibility hes a bit miffed, not a WUM at all, it's common sense.

I am interested in knowing whether RVP was aware Ferguson was going to retire when he agreed to join. I know Ferguson claims he decided to leave at Christmas, but I wonder whether it was ever discussed before.

Could be, though he's recently said he would like to stay beyond his current contract.

Maybe he just has a case of the boohoos.

Well, his current contract runs until he is 33? Its unlikely he would get a new contract from a club bigger or as big as United at that age anyway so it would make sense.

Didnt he used to have run ins with Moyes during his time at Arsenal or was that just Wenger?

Either way, any top player who comes in to a club to work with SAF and win the top prizes is obviously going to be upset if he leaves after one season and the entire staff rearranged.. However its not certain thats why he isn't performing, its just a possibility.

Again, 'isn't performing'... 6 goals in 8 games. That's more than 'on fire' Giroud.

Weren't 2 of those in a friendly vs a championship side?

RVP performed well vs Swansea, but thats about it, sharp contrast to last seasons start.

We used to have opposition fans that were clever and subtle and witty when on a wind-up. What happened there?

Maybe we can get some tips from the Chelsea fan on how they've turned it around for their strikers.

By all means if you want to talk about Chelsea and strikers then make a thread or bump a Chelsea thread, this is the RVP so why should it be incorrect for me to comment on RVP just because our strikers havent scored?

By that logic you should never be able comment on Hazard being average this season because Uniteds wingers/ attacking midfielders have been average.
