I just adore his defensive work. When there's a corner coming in for the near post, I'm so confident that Van Persie will head it away that I relax before the ball even reaches the box.

Should have scored, no other way around it. But he put in a fantastic performance and I'm sure he'll bag one in the return leg.

Sex.

Any other player from our squad in that situation, apart from Kagawa and Nani, would have lost the ball or hoped for a throw in at best.

Loved that little bit of movement to leave two of their players look dumb in his dust

He did that several times when he was crowded and had no space. He turned, got himself free and run forward. Excellent play and we need to find a way to involve him more and create chances for him.

Shame about his miss though :(

Got that special ability we lacked in a centre forward ever since Saha left us. That ability to back with his back facing the goal and turn on a sixpence with two CBs closing the door. Brilliant to watch.

He's a level above any of our players..we need to use him more in the second leg.

When do yellow cards get wiped? Or do they stay all the way to the final? If we beat Madrid it would be a fecker if we miss RVP in any game because of Ramos the prick

I thought he was excellent, yes he should have scored, but his allround play was world class.

Agreed. It was a shame that he was mostly feeding off long balls and scraps. But barring the miss he did brilliantly to make the most out of the few times he got on the ball.

He's easily our best player. His technique, intelligence and hold up play is fantastic. At times, he really looks a level above any of our players.

Yes. But by the highest standards our front six is workmanlike. The fact that our attacking players earn so many plaudits on these forums for their defensive contribution speaks volumes. If your creative players are mainly praised for 'putting in a shift' and 'running all day' and 'never failing to help out the full back' it raises a few questions. I don't recall Ronaldo being over-praised for those attributes. Anybody got any skills gifs for Wayne Rooney?

We're getting the job done, and that's the main thing. But is it spoiled to wish for a little more style? Less nourishing potatoes and just an occasional taste of cavier? A few more 'Wow, how did he do that?' moments would be appreciated.

He was not really helped by a terrible midfield performance in terms of our possession play last night. When he did get the ball, he looked absolutely quality on occasions.

Play Cleverley next leg and get the ball up to him more and we should be in business.

You know what's funny, he's scored what 23 goals for us so far and to my mind he's missed quite a few easy chances too. Throw in the fact our wingers haven't turned up all season then it makes you realise how good he is and how much more there is still to come. Still haven't seen one of those trademark RVP piledrivers this year either.

As long as we're leading by 12 points and in with a good chance of advancing in the CL while still being in the FA Cup I'm not complaining.

I like the fancy moves and stuff like that, everyone does, but to me it's hardly the most important thing.
I apologise if you take offence to this, but your post makes it sound like you only care about flashy plays whilst more or less completely disregarding everything else that's important and what gets the job done.

And what was your point exactly regarding Rooney and the "lack of gifs"?
Other than my previous point that you basicaly hold dribbling in the highest regards while working your balls off means next to nothing.

He isn't downplaying work ethic but thinks our front men, bloody brilliant front men, should be praised for attacking flair, maestro etc. And he is right. It's just the way we use our flair players in such games for a few years now.

The good thing about Rooney is that even if he's not in his best attacking mood, he will still run his heart out for you.

You slyly stuck the word mainly in there despite it being completely untrue. Nice one. Eto'o was a tremendously hard-working player, Pedro, Sánchez and Villa are tireless runners...having these "workmanlike" players seems to have served Barca pretty well. Do you think they'd have been as successful without these defensive contributions from their front men? You're living on cloud cuckoo land if so.

Its crazy to think he's done as well as he has with our wingers out of form. I'm hoping Nani slowly coming back can change that. If Madrid have the best player in Ronaldo, then surely we have the second best in RVP. His touch, technique and ability to get into space are second to none. He went so close to scoring at the Bernabeu hopefully he can rectify that at OT. Having Cleverley in the side I think helps him, Cleverley brings a certain level of fluidity to our play and helps open up space for our attackers.

You and OGkush (awful name) are being a little unfair, Brwned. I'm not decrying workrate. As you correctly point out, Barca have demonstrated, if demonstration was needed, that flair and hard work are very hard to beat. I just wish we displayed a little more of the former, that's all.

I do resent you quoting my post before I could correct 'cavier' though :D (thanks for not pointing it out anyway)

He's just so good and gives us so much extra that we have become as entertaining to watch as when Ronaldo was with us or when Giggs was in his prime or when Le King was banging them in. What a player he is.

Nani and/or Zaha will help with that, hopefully. I don't think it's fair at all to characterise Rooney as a workmanlike player though. Nor Welbeck. It's not their best quality, it's not their defining quality and it's certainly not the only aspect of their skillset. Valencia I understand (though completely disagree) but that's about it.

You did all the legwork there yourself, no help needed on my end. Cavier sounds better if you pronounce it in French in fairness.

What does my name have to do with anything? Why do you even feel the need to adress it?

And we weren't being unfair, in your previous post you worded yourself differently and it did come across as you simply being unsatisfied by United players not "showing off" while saying that prasing them for their work rate is something that shouldn't be done because they're forwards.

I do agree that if a forward's best quality is running about, putting pressure on opponents and defending then there's something wrong and he's either playing out of position or something, but that's not the case we have at this club.
Their workrate was simply pointed out more often than their "attacking flare" because that's what they were doing for the majority of the game, we were hardly dominating posession and having to break down too many settled defenses, most of what we managed to do was from counters.

Robin van Persie is addicted to the thrill of playing for Manchester United.

The Dutchman has revealed he is completely hooked by the *excitement of leading United’s challenge for the Treble.

And it doesn’t matter whether it’s Real Madrid or Reading, he wants Sir Alex Ferguson to just keep letting him play.

United face the Royals in the fifth round of the FA Cup *on Monday night, still on a high following a draw in the Bernabeu that has given them a great chance of progressing into the last eight of the Champions League.

Van Persie said: “I have found out that when you play for *Manchester United, every game is a big game.

“There are some extra-special matches – like when you play City or Liverpool in the Premier League and Real Madrid in the *Champions League - but the so-called smaller games are important also because *winning those games makes you champions.

“Personally, I love to play all of the games.

"You get into a rhythm. I get used to having a game every three days and when you don’t play for a week, it can take maybe 10 or 15 minutes to get your rhythm back.

“I want to play against Reading. I want to keep going, *playing all of the games.

“I love the intensity of playing for United. It is great to be involved in huge games when you don’t know what is going to happen.

“You get more out of it when there is a thin line between *winning and losing.

“I love the buzz, the drama, the excitement. I live for that. I can’t imagine the day when I have to stop playing. I know I will miss the buzz so much.”

Van Persie has justified Fergie’s decision to pay Arsenal *£24million for a 29-year-old with an* incredible burst of goals.

He has already hit the target 23 times for United. But he is haunted by the goal that got away in the final minutes of Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Real.

Van Persie said: “That second chance I had, just after I hit the bar, that should have gone in. I mis-hit the ball. I wanted to hit it hard, but I just couldn’t produce the power.

“We won’t sit back against *Madrid in the second leg – that isn’t in United’s DNA.

“Teams like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona – great teams – don’t bother whether they are at home or away.

“Hopefully we can go further in the Champions League and test ourselves against some more top teams in Europe.

“But first we must focus on *getting beyond Madrid. The *manager says that is an acid test for us and he is right.”

He added: “The way this season is going, it feels like it could be very, very special.

“I am playing in games that are the greatest you can play in.

“The manager said: ‘Don’t play the occasion, play the game’. I think we did that.”

Yet another good interview.

Great interview. Seems to love playing for us. Shame he didn't score at the Bernabeu.

I don't think we've seen the best of him either in a United shirt. He's only played a handful of times with Rooney and that partnership can only get better. Plus Kagawa is yet to fully find his feet for us. I'm hoping we can get him on the ball a bit more for the return leg at OT. IMO he's probably our most important player and a step above our other attackers. He's certainly a step above Ramos and Pepe.

I think your definition of 'flair' is unfairly narrow, though. No, there aren't many GIFs of Rooney pulling off a trick or beating a man by dribbling past him (although the idea that he never does it is a myth, actually - he just tends to beat a man Anderson-style, not Nani-style).

But he's hardly just a hard worker. He's an incredibly technically skilful player, and with Scholes well past his best probably has the best range of passing in our team (aside from Carrick). He gets some wonderful assists too.

He's so full of shit: 'Teams like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona – great teams – don’t bother whether they are at home or away'. Just after saying:'We won’t sit back against Madrid in the second leg [like we did in the first leg] – that isn’t in United’s DNA'.

Suiting yourself there Pete.

We had more clear-cut chances against them (4?), playing away from home, than any European team could wish for. That's good enough an indicator of attacking intent for me.

every interview he does just makes him that much more likable, as if he needs them considering how many times he saved us this season...people would love him regardless, this just gives it that little bit of extra :D

I must admit that I was worried that Pepe was going to come on in defence for them with the specific instruction to get him a second yellow. When I saw him coming on, I was scared.

Ramos is a proper cnut for getting him booked, and I do fear that 90mins against Ramos and Pepe would be almost impossible to negotiate without a yellow.

This video would give even Peterstorey the chills.

Van Persie is the ultimate centre-forward(no weakness)!
