Think our expectations are too high. He's going to miss chances; he missed a huge one when we lost to Spurs as well.

He was living off scraps today to be fair. Missed Rooney.

Far worse than Giggs yesterday, in fact I think Giggs would've been better off playing where VP did.

He isn't capable of running the whole game from an attacking midfield position to the same extent as Rooney.

Wasnt good yesterday. Should definitely do better agaisnt Norwich. Didnt help that the 4 guys behind him all had a battle for the most pointless player on the pitch though.

The guy gets a pass because he has done it in so many other games this season. Please vacate the thread.

Nah, he isn't for second striker role, he is far better as a pure striker.

He had some very good moments but was not hugely involved. Missed a couple difficult chances.

I'm sure VP can play a second striker role but based on the team he came from, I can see why he found it difficult. It was weird seeing him struggle so much yesterday but I'm not going to use one game to say he shouldn't play in that role. I think Rooney just understands how to work that position better for what we try and do with our wide play.

I thought he was alright, there's nothing anyone could have done but carry the ball themselves in that deeper role. Hernandez doesn't offer much in terms of link up and with neither winger either offering any quality out wide or any options either running in behind to give some space or for a quick pass, there was simply nothing to work with. That said he should have done better with the ball giggs played to him, should have gone on his right.

Rooney understands the position better full stop IMO.

Definitely his worst game so far for United.
It can be blamed on quite a few things, pick whichever you want:
- Playing without Rooney
- Playing the second striker role
- Our wingers being complete shit
- Our general play being slow, undecisive and simply non-threatening all around

Has been very poor, maybe cuz he is playing alongside a shiite midfiled and he has to drop deep to help out.

He doesn't look arsed in the last few games.

Probably just a well earned dip in form, we need him firing over christmas though, Hernandez's goals are carrying him at the moment so it's not too much of a problem.

Everything is the fecking midfields fault, even when a world class player plays like shite.

Give it a rest, he was shit because he isn't playing well for the last couple of games.

We haven't been getting him the ball, how exactly is he supposed to look anything other than poor?

He has been missing chances though, taking on stupid volleys (twice v Norwich, once today from that lovely ball chipped in behind by Rooney) or taking on the man instead of just hitting it. And when he does just hit it he falls over. I guarantee he's not happy with how he's played in the last couple of games.

That volley he attempted from that beautiful pass from Rooney was a bit too much for me.A tight angle on his weaker foot and the chances of hitting the target are very slim

yeah..there's no doubt he won't be happy with his form. He's a bit of a perfectionist that way. However, he's one of those playes who can turn it very easily. He said himself he has to change his game a bit to fit into the united way, so its all a first season learning experience for him. He's always a threat...always able to do something out of the blue, so well worth his space...

He definitely hasn't been at his best, but I'm sure that if we had been consistently getting him the ball more in the last couple of games he would have a few goals. And he really has been unlucky on quite a few chances as well, hitting the post a couple of times and a few good tackles from defenders barely keeping him from scoring.

Didn't get much luck to be honest, had some great chances and he created the space for himself but unfortunately he was only a nearly man, like his national team.

Yeah definitely, not shown the killer edge or composure you'd expect from him, he's not had much to work with but he's had chances that a player of his level should be doing more with.

Yeah he's definitely been unlucky. That strike at the end deflected over by Nelsen (?) was heading right for the corner and would've been a seriously classy finish. Pretty much all of his goals have a bit of class about them really.

I'm sorry the guy's a striker how can he look great when the rest of the team is awful. People were saying the same stuff about Chicharito (although admittedly Van Persie has missed more chances than Chico lately) but I really think its unfair to call a striker "poor" when he's had maybe 2 or 3 clear cut chances in his last 2 or 3 games.

Had Van Persie been having a Torres of a season and being put through time and time again just to fluff his lines then you could say he's been "poor" but that hasn't been happening. He's been feeding off of scraps and I wasn't surprised to see him try to go for it the few times he had half chances because strikers want to score goals and when they aren't getting good chances they'll go for any half chance they get.

The man is a number 9. If we give him the ball in the box he will make something happen but expecting him to pick it up in centre midfield and make it happen all by himself as if he were Maradona is a bit much. As far as I can see Robin's playing fine but his runs are rarely being picked out by anyone besides Rooney, which has been a problem when Rooney hasn't a) been available or b) been on his game.

He needs to start showing some of his self proclaimed 'nine and a half' characteristics!

I have no doubts that if Rooney had played how RVP has done we would see some agendas being pushed!

Well 9.5 is not 10 is it?

Van Persie's a forward with the hold up play and passing to bring other people into the game and he thrives in pockets of space between the lines as it allows him room to do damage in. But the way he does that damage is not doing impressions of Sneijder its by moving into positions where he can strike at goal.

Lately he hasn't been getting the chance to do that and noticeably he only really had the opportunity to get space when Hernandez was running ahead of him and he had mobility in the midfield behind him. Another reason to go 4-3-3 with Chico, Wazza, Clev, Ando and another around him.

Did I say it was?

He likens himself to Rooney, 'we are both 9.5s'. Except, Rooney is better than him at it, and can affect the game without much service.

I beg to differ. While Rooney is a better 10 than Van Persie Wazza's been equally as quiet lately. Against Villa Rooney wasn't much to write home about today he was equally as quiet for the first hour. The main difference for both was the introduction of Hernandez and the midfield changes which today and at Villa altered the flow of the game and gave them both more room to move in.

i have no concerns with him at all. This guy is pure class, he's just not getting any service from the team. The wide players are off form and the midfield we have been deploying the last few games is unable create chances for the front players.

Good post, along my line of thought. Perhaps a bit of a dry spell and us not getting him into the game enough.

He's def not been getting the service, but in the earlier games he was taking the scraps and scoring. He had several (half) chances today that you would expect him to finish. Not worried though, the guy is class.

On another note, I was waiting for him to open Derry, and wouldn't be surprised to see him have a little pop at him the next time they meet.

He needs a much better midfield to be fair. He's pure class and once we really get going, he will be unstoppable again

When I saw this, RVP pro footballer taking pictures of Cantona, his legend was sealed for me:

No matter what happens for the rest of this season the man can literally do no wrong now.

Thats an excellent pic. He really looks like a kid who's come to a grand candy shop. Seems in love with everything around him at the club.

The only one in the pic that looked on with awe at the SAF statue.
