Injury free Robin van Persie every day of the week, that's not even a debate.

Bloody hell, I'm so sad to say I have to agree with you!:D

RVP is the better goal scorer, he is better with his back to the goal, imo a better passer of the ball, especially short passing, and almost never does he give the ball away.

How about Rooney with left footed metatarsalgia or van Persie with bilateral piriformis syndrome?

Both very different players, both best at what they do. I think Rooney is a better 10 than RvP, but RvP is a much better 9 than Rooney.

Why the feck does it matter when we have both?

It matters far more more when we have both, because there may be a choice between the two players. If VP is at Arsenal and Rooney is at United a comparison is purely academic, it's a matter for arguments in the pub, if they're both at United which player is better, and which Ferguson selects, may make a real difference to our fortunes.

We are at our strongest when the two are on the pitch.

But like someone said in another thread, Rooney makes us tick, van Persie scores our goals. The architect and the predator. I'd have Rooney if I could only have one.

Not saying I would necessarily choose Rooney, but people underestimate his defensive work, which I think he has over Van Persie. RVP couldn't have done the job on Arteta that Wayne did at all, let alone while adding significantly to the attack. I don't think you can compare them in a vacuum, who else is playing and in what system are important factors.

There are certain individuals on this forum who seriously under-rate Rooney either out of hatred over a contract dispute or a lack of intelligence. I seriously don't know what club the people who speak about RVP being streets ahead are watching this season, maybe they're just reading match reports or looking at results or something.

The difference between the United side in Rooney's absence this season and United with him playing is absolutely massive. Following Rooney's injury against Fulham we were very scrappy, the midfield looked awful, against any decent side we were very vulnerable, Southampton played us off the park at times, Spurs were killing us.

At half time in the Spurs game, Rooney came on any we looked a completely different side, we were far better in Europe, a week later we went to St. James' and annihilated them with Rooney as man of the match, we hammered Stoke, put three past Braga, and in the last week or so deservedly defeated Chelsea and Arsenal. We're a lot better in an attacking sense and a defending sense when he's in the side, he's a much more important part of the side than van Persie, who is himself a rather brilliant footballer.

If we had Messi or Ronaldo already, then I would choose Rooney over RVP to play with either of those.

He is a brilliant player to have alongside other brilliant players.

Almost everything Van Persie does has quality to it, even a simple pass has a purpose to it. You rarely see him give the ball away or make sloppy decisions. Rooney is amazing when he's on form, but he can be quite sloppy with the ball at times, basically inconsistent. And most important for a striker, Van Persie is the more consistent and clinical striker; he's consistently shown that. If you need goals in the last 10 minutes, which striker would you trust more to get you those goals? Van Persie for me.

Why does every player need get compared to Rooney eventually? Rooney vs Ronaldo, Rooney vs Nani, now Rooney vs RVP. Seriously you cocks, stop it.

This. Some of you should sit back and enjoy the Rooney/RVP show rather than trying to disseminate every little detail and compare miniscule differences.

Rooney on top form is a better overall player.

But the RVP of the last 2-3 years has been class and a bit more consistent.

But I would tilt 55%- 45% in Rooney's favor.

The ridiculous thing is that it's not a who/or question anymore. The fact we have them both is incredible and we never have to think about which is better as long as they play to their strengths together which all the signs are saying they will. They are both players who have had huge responsibility as the main striker for 3 or 4 years now and they are both looking like they really appreciate having that quality next to them who can shoulder the pressure too.

I don't think this team is playing at even 60% of its potential yet and look at the results we have had. When it really clicks, maybe this year, maybe next with a bit of luck on the injuries front and certain players can get a string of games to kick on together then it is going to be frighteningly good.

Why does the debate constantly happen?

Because Rooney is the constant....whereas the foreign luxury stars come and go, and it's a discussion forum.

I don't think I'd describe any of our current squad in such a way myself...

This is always such a stupid post.

Especially when Rooney has been dropped already this season, and RVP hasn't.

But saying that, the new role for Rooney seems to be as important to our overall effectiveness as RVP's presence is up front. I have to agree with those posters who don't want to choose between the 2, i am delighted with both and to drop either of them at present would be damaging in my view.

Both very important players, but Rooney, definitely. Our other strikers can somewhat make up for RvPs goals but not for Rooney as the heartbeat. At which point you pull RvP back to 10 and all of a sudden you have a poorer version of RvP trying to score and a poorer version of Rooney trying to pull it all together.

Because you think so? I bet the votes would be quite evenly split if there was a global pool for United fans.

I forgot to add "IMO". Fair enough, many people thinks Rooney is better player, I thought that too before.

IMO Rooney is better than van Persie with his overall play. RVP is a better finisher.

There isn't an awful lot between them, but I'd rather have Rooney in my team then RVP if I could choose one of them. Most managers would probably agree (IMO).

They're performing quite admirably in their respective roles for the team. I'm not sure what else you'd really expect from them. I see the answer to the question as both. Rooney may be the heartbeat but RVP has shown you need the maturity and simple know-how to make that heartbeat mean something.

Well we've won a fair few titles without RVP and with Rooney as the main man. Rooney's contribution seemed to mean something then, even without RVP's maturity or know how.

Aye. Oddly, on here people seem to underrate Rooney quite a lot. Have a look at the forwards in almost any team in the world and then see what Rooney contributes. People look at those pub player moments when he miscontrols it further than most of us can kick it and use that as a basis to criticise his entire game, which is outstanding.

The real question should have been, who would you rather have ?

Peter Davenport or Robin van Persie ?

Ooooooh ROBIN VAN PERSIE !!! Ooooooh ROBIN VAN PERSIE !!!!

And we've lost a few titles as well. With RVP, we've now increased our chances.

To be fair, I think Rooney has been absolute quality for us over the years but it's nice that now, we don't have to solely depend on him. Even though he is our "heartbeat", he doesn't have to beat as fast to help the team reach the same state of effectiveness we have now. In essence, it's helping him to express his game even more.

I couldn't give a toss, they are both playing for us and long may it continue. I still can't believe we signed Robin Van fecking Persie, still totally over the moon with that signing!
