Roberto Firmino

I dont really consider young a wing forward tbh. Valencia just isn't these days, if he ever was.
At the end of the season young seemed to be playing deeper than fellaini most games.
He worked well with him, kept fellaini up the pitch mostly, hassling defenders.

Honestly as great a job as they did last season i think we should be rejigging the team a bit and both should be an option among many imo.

Depends on who else we sign in midfield, whether this guy, mata or rooney (or even di maria) would be the best option as the #10.
If rooney is pulled into midfield then i dont see any reason why this guy cant be played up front.
As much as i like mata you'd need an absolute monster of a dm to keep the midfield running in the league.
Firmino looks capable enough defensively and like no pushover. He looks athlethic enough and like he'd be easier to offset with schneiderlin for instance.
He'd be a good option if we want to keep rooney up front and for forward options, who would you rather have? (thats realistically attainable)

I'd consider our wing options next season to be di maria, mata, januzaj and memphis with young as a plan b paired with fellaini.

Januzaj, mata and di maria might not get as much time as they like but if januzaj for instance keeps the team in the league keep he can win himself some more games basically.
Mata and di maria will be competing for one spot imo and I cant see both being kept particularly happy.

I hope to see memphis most weeks and that he'll be brilliant but its his first season so i wont hold it against him if he doesn't hit the ground running. Hes young and games will be good for him but giving him the odd break wouldn't hurt either imo.

Would be a weird signing, I wonder what his role would be in the team. Either AM or striker, I guess.

I haven't watched him play, but what are the qualities that made us look at him rather than at De Bruyne or Lacazette for those positions, considering that all 3 are the same age?

LVG has had a season with his team, he knows what he wants to progress to create the team and style that will express his philosophy on the pitch. For me the idea of who we sign for what position is out of the window.

much more cheaper, willing to move, can play as a striker and AM/winger.

Yeah, this is my outlook for the summer ahead. We've had a full season to vet potential new signings. While that doesn't guarantee success, you'd think the manager was very assure as to what he wants and where he needs it, and we'll benefit from that as a result.

Doesn't LVG's long and storied career have a bit of noticeable gap when it comes to 'Brazilian players he's successfully worked with'?

I'm convinced this is the 'other' Manchester, and it's all lost in translation.

Wouldn't surprise me. I doubt they're that big out there and whoever reported the news could've just been told "Manchester"

I think Van Gaal may have a tattoo fetish.

I cannot see why Firmino being Brazilian would matter at all, unless Van Gaal genuinely doesn't want to sign any Brazilian players, which I doubt. Just as one recent example, he signed Luiz Gustavo for Bayern a few years ago and that worked out fine. He had a problem with Rivaldo and it became a big deal, just like he has had problems with lots of players of many nationalities.

I dunno, the last Brazilian attacking midfielder that Vickery was creaming his pants over before we signed him turned out to be a burger eating ball of gas with the exercise tolerance of a hibernating bear.
He wasn't the only one creaming their pants. And to be fair he said that he doesn't know my about him apart from what Firmino has shown in his fledgling Brazil career.

Never seem him play- is he potentially an alternative to gundogan, or is he the number 9 signing?

Completely different type of player, Gundogan is a much deeper midfield player. Firmino can play striker or in the hole, has pace and flair

Not at all we still definately need a gundogan type, from what ive seen he's he's a forward player that can play anywhere up front on the left/right wing, at striker or in the hole.

Im out of the loop on this, is there any substance to it at all?

There's been articles about us being linked to him for about a week. It's only just started to hit mainstream media today, so whether they've picked it up from these articles or whether its genuine is anyones guess.

*I have google alert setup with his name so I get an email each day with articles.

I would think Firmino would be intended to play in the hole behind Rooney, with Fellaini going to the bench.

He can play pretty much anywhere across the front line, right?

Think that would be perfect tbh. That way we only have to buy one out and out striker, with Firmino as '3rd choice' but also getting plenty of games on the wing or the #10 role.

Clyne smalling otamendi shaw
Carrick/schneiderlin
Herrera Gundogan
Firmino Rooney Depay

That's the only way everyone* fits in

That would mean that any new midfielder (say Gundogan) would be putting Herrera out of the team rather than Fellaini.

I don't see the point in that really. If Firmino comes here I hope he's doing so as a striker.

They'd be putting Carrick out, not Herrera. The next midfielder will be to replace Carrick because he's getting old and is the most immediate need in midfield. As it is, we're entirely too dependent on Carrick playing so he needs competition/a replacement.

I still think Carrick will be a first choice starter next season regardless of who we sign.
