Roberto De Zerbi

Interesting to see he is going to Marseille. I would have thought Brighton would have been a better choice still to Marseille.

The fact that so many teams needed a manager, Chelsea, Barca, Bayern and none of them had Di Zerbi in the final candidates must tell you something.

So many big clubs needed a new manager this summer and he ends up at Marseille. But something something earmarked as Pep replacement. Has become way overrated on here.

I think its telling that Brighton were content to let him go without waiting for a club to actually come calling. I don't think he'd have got the sack as such for last season, but their form was awful after the 6-1 defeat to Villa in September, it probably suited both parties for him to leave quietly. I'm not surprised he didn't get the seat at one of the big clubs that was going this summer. Honestly, Im just glad we didn't go for him. I think United fans overrate him on the basis of them doing well against us in particular.

I'm confused. I thought Brighton let him go for nothing so he could walk into a job at an elite side?

According to strong reports in France.....De Zerbi has turned us down

There were reports that talks reached a point where wages were discussed, I think with Tuchel, and I guess RdZ.

Not sure whether that means he turned us down though. If we said a certain amount and he said another, then INEOS decided not to bother going back, then who turned down who?

His new employers would obviously want to spin it that way. But considering all the top clubs that were looking for a manager this summer, why was it he ended up at Marseille? I think that probably says it all.

Doing the rounds on twitter that he turned us down in favour of Marseille. People believe that shit too.

Big clubs need to play for the Ws not for entertainment. The 4-0 loss in Rome made him look like a fool, the last months of his PL campaign went awry and his stock plummeted.

I just had a look, Marseille actually spend quite a bit of money in the last 2 seasons over 100m each season.

I would be surprised if he has rejected us for Marseille.

Exactly, the fact that he has ended up at Marseille says it all.

Really? You haven't met any United fans then?

Alot of fans on this forum dont care about W and trophies, its about GD. Finishing 4th with +GD is better than winning a trophy.

Would you be surprised to hear United is considered a graveyard both for managers and players in silly Italy?

It is not surprising at all. We are a graveyard for both. I dont want to believe it but its the truth.

No manager, No player has improved their reputation from coming to United since 2013.

So the all knowing media must have been referring to Marseille as the club which paid Brighton compensation but swore them to secrecy until now.

Fair enough.

Ok, let’s ask our common friend and super-user @giorno then.

It would take a lot to convince me that Marseille is a better career move for any rising manager/player. For all the troubles, there are plenty of players who have improved at United, especially youngsters. Many of them will have still won trophies as well.

I know, I made the same argument when he lost 4-0 to Luton back in Jan. But apparently he plays sexy football so he should be a good pick for big clubs it seems.

He would have been under the same pressure ETH has been under if not more, so i have no idea why some people want ETH to be sacked only to be replaced by De Zerbi.

Funny how many people disagreed with me over the past months when I said no major club would touch De Zerbi

Don't expect any of them to admit they were wrong and I was right - but I was right and you were wrong.

Would it surprise you that no one gives a shit what Italian opinions are on Utd? Unless it’s a certain Mr Ancelotti of course. :)

Sure, yet this a De Zerbi topic and the man still listens (too much, admittedly) to the whispers from his home country… and Milan rejecting him for Paulo fecking Fonseca on the basis he is not pragmatic enough stung him.

Why were Juventus not in for him? Or Napoli? Lazio too I think? I think there were a fair few Italian clubs changing their manager this season.

If that's true, it's only embarrassing for Milan, not De Zerbi.

There's a movement, encouraged by social media and online tacticos, that means people will believe in you provided you cosplay as Del Bosque. Its got to the point where playing poundshop Pep has got Kompany the Bayern job. All the while 'Vibes FC' Don Carlo is signing off with his fifth Champions League playing to the strengths of his squad, rather than playing square pegs in round holes and getting battered for half a season ala De Zerbi.

Its incredible right? Definitely the reason why people have PR. If you can persuade educated adults that your client turned down Man Utd for Marseille its definitely worth the money.

Exactly this.

Kompany getting the Bayern job is purely on name rather than merit. He worked with Pep so he must be good vibes..

THe Di Zerbi one is funny, it comes from the same person Santi who makes up alot of rumours anyway, a French journalist who wants to help make French football feel important.

I mean anyone who believes that.. needs a head wobble, a league that is struggling to secure TV rights.

My god, a rational comment on the caf. Hard to find nowadays. Well said sir.

Thats his level. Overrated manager, no wonder none of the big clubs touched him.

What's the context here? Picking OM over United? Of fecking course nobody would expect a manager to pick OM over Manchester United. Graveyard or not(and OM isn't particularly better in that regard either)

When he coached Sassuolo, his tactics were already pretty and progressive but he was also pretty easily found out and countered.

I don't watch Brighton much, I'm sure he's improved accumulating experience in Ukraine and PL, but down here he's still framed as a bit of a hipster coach, exciting but lacking substance for a club that has to deliver trophies.

Probably unjust but you can sense the prejudice.

While for smaller clubs like Lazio, with the relatively high profile career he's having, he's already beyond their reach.

Honestly kinda spot on for what he was at Brighton too.

Not really, his stock was already high at sassuolo and went sky high after he got Brighton to 6th in the PL. Fans of Milan, Juventus or Napoli would have been doing cartwheels in the streets if they hired him. Of course Napoli fans are doing cartwheels in the street right now because they got Conte, the gobbos are pretty happy with Thiago Motta and Ibra just said Milan want to win so I guess Milan fans will now force themselves to be excited about Fonseca :smirk:
