Roberto De Zerbi

I honestly can't believe some would have taken him here.
He’s still 2nd in their league. Managers can’t be judged on certain games. If that was the case Guardiola isn’t a good coach for losing to Bournemouth .

Always seemed odd that in a season when so many clubs were looking for a new manager, and he was going for a song, that he ended up at Marseille. I suspect the clubs that spoke to him felt they just couldn't work alongside him.

No idea what's going on with Marseille but scanned through fbref and the data doesn't look particularly good despite the 2nd position in the table. xPts has them on 10th, xG not that much better.

Form has been pretty meh too (L D W L W L)

Will wait for resident Ligue 1 experts to chime in here.

Looked like the new Pep for a brief period at Brighton but he's fallen off big time since. Flash in the pan hipster coach.

Well as far as I know he's been successful at every club he's been at, improving them. It is a matter of time until a top club picks him up

Define success. He is good, just not good enough. He hasnt won any impressive title and his points per game in Italy and England are decent, but nothing exceptional. If you watch his teams over the course of a season, nothing screams top manager.

Who does better with teams at that level?

We're talking about whether he's a "brilliant" coach. He's not. I personally think he would be a disaster at a top club.

Don't know what's gone sour at Marseille even though they're 2nd in the league - these results happen occasionally when playing as expansive as he likes to, but it seems like the trend is upwards rather than downwards for them.

Think some of the comments regarding him falling off are a bit harsh. He did well two seasons ago with Brighton getting them to 6th, and was rewarded with the club selling a genuinely elite midfield pairing in Caicedo and Mac Allister over the following summer. This together with getting long term injuries to their two most productive wingers I think is a reasonable explanation to having a bit of a drop-off last season. Think he could do very well at a club with players of higher ability, but unsure which team would take the gamble. City after Pep leaves perhaps?
