Rio Olympics 2016

Right I stayed up till 4am last night watching the athletics but I've work tomorrow so will have to bow out now. Hopefully when I get up Murray has won this and Bolt has beat Gatlin.

I do think we should win an extra medal for our kits. Like, they look a bit shit, but at least we put effort in. Del Potro's polo just looks like someones prit-sticked an Argentina flag onto a blue polo shirt.

Del Potro is so good when fit and on form.

Yep, such a shame he's had so many injury problems. Could've had a few more GS's and tournament wins, probably in the same realm as Murray if he'd been fit a lot more.

Would be interesting to know how much we spend in comparison to China and the USA.

America has world class sporting infrastructure through their college system. China has 1/6 of the world's population and the regime know the value of looking good on the international stage. If we manage to hold on to second it will be an incredible achievement.

It goes even further - compare the average US secondary school facilities and coaching with that available in the average UK high school. No comparison. The whole organisation of school sports is just much more sophisticated and of a higher status.

I know. The only equipment specifically for athletics we had at my school was a sand pit with the obligatory dog turd in it.

Well played Delpo. Got work in the morning, so will have to just find out the result in the morning

It's incredible, really. Particularly when you think back to the 1996 Olympics when we only won 1 gold and finished 36th in the medals table. 20 years later and we're behind only the USA (which has 5 times our population but only about twice as many medals). Given the spread of medals across various events, I think we can make a strong case for being the best all-round sporting nation in the world.

Now, if only England could recreate that in football...
The strategy for London 2012 was to invest in whichever sports would maximise our medal return. It is an impressively strong performance but worth having the caveat that we've targeted sports where either the talent pool is thinner (eg those where only a certain cohort of countries compete) or where there are more medals at stake (eg swimming and cycling).

Shame injuries robbed DelPo from being part of the elite group of players.
Fantastic when fit.

Still hope he loses today though lol

Match length thus far has been insane considering we're only two sets in. Will surely benefit Murray.
