Right Winger... Who do we go for?

I think it was suggested in a way of "Jose might fancy him for work rate" rather than he's the man to solve all out problem lol

Hopefully Jose sees it as a vital position to have a world class player in. It's pretty clear having a very good all round pacey forward there would benefit us immensely.

I wouldn't want us to. Varela and Darmian have shown enough under Van Gaal to suggest they can be excellent under a proper manager. Looking around the market, I don't see many better options, particularly when we have Valencia as an adequate if uninspiring 3rd choice.

I'd be plenty happy with that if they crack on next season. I agree, it's tough to find a world class RB. It's always almost seemed like the least important position.

Fekir would've been a safe bet if he didn't have that injury. I hope our club isn't put off because of it. He commented on Martial moving here in a very positive way.

This will be the key signing to get right.

Couldn't agree more. He's a smart guy so I have faith.

Here's list of 49 advanced midfield players, sorted by whoscored Rating. I excluded some from the list such as anyone (a) over 28, (b) 'creative' players who can't average an assist or goal at least once every 270 minutes!, and (c) who clearly normally play as a #9.

Looks to me like Gabriel Jesus is another right-footed left-winger. He's pretty two-footed so should be good on the right too. I'd say go for: Riyad Mahrez, Ousmane Dembélé or Rachid Ghezzal, with Gabriel Jesus as the wild-card (fans will love him). Not for Sadio Mané or Leroy Sané, because they're either too expensive or not currently highly rated (both stat-wise and in terms of goals/assists per minute).

Note:
Mahrez is 9th best player in the world (according to whoscored stats), just above Pogba who's 10th.
whoscored : whoscored order (e.g. Lionel Messi = 1, with top rating = 8.5)
Players with name highlighted in green are some linked to United.
MotM : green highlight shows player gets a MotM every 8 matches, or better.
Yellows : Only 1 player is highlighted as a potential issue because AM style players generally have a good ratio of games played to yellows.

Good post. Bale has really impressive stats.

I wanted Dembele, but I can see with this list that there are a lot of options. Griezmann would be my muppet signing. However, I would be happy with someone like Sane, Mkhitaryan, Moura, Mahrez.

If we get a top top (not just one top) right winger to go with the Ibra / Jose signings the Caf is gonna get very bullish going into the new season. Well, I know I will.

After Vardy goes to Arsenal, Mahrez is there for the taking. The only way these Leicester players were going to stay is if they stuck together. But now one of the pillars of their success is about to go...

He's not someone I would particularly want but I'm a little surprised that no media outlet I've seen has suggested a move for Ben Arfa. Had a hell of a season and is looking to move from the sounds of things.

Darmain has shown nothing other than in the first 4 games of the season. He has been absolutely dreadful and his debut season is similar to Depays. Fine if you want to give him another season but to then criticise Valencia who is twice the player is very strange. Rojo and Darmain have certainly not improved our squad never mind first 11. Varela hopefully he kicks on but I doubt he's a Jose type player.

I may be off base but I don't see us buying an under 21 winger because the scrutiny regarding Rashford will be on Jose and I think he'll utilize on the RW at times this season.
You may be right. But I still have hope that we target a young and talented winger/inside forward.

I noticed that you mentioned Joao Mario as right winger, does he usually play there or is he better as CM? To be honest I haven't seen Mario or Ounas, but I have been able to watch some brazilian players like Gabriel Jesus, Gabigol and Lucas Lima (he plays more central). I think one of them could be a really good signing (if we go for a young player).

He's more of a striker. Bit like Sturridge. We need an out and out speed merchant winger.

Independently of who we sign. Who should be the 2nd choice in that position? Lingard, Mata, Valencia or Januzaj?

Lingard.

Valencia is a right back, Mata too slow and Januzaj needs to prove himself all over again and might as well be and anomaly.

The available talent in world football seems to be in an astonishing decline. Ten years ago there were like ten players we could buy for this position that would be world class and improve us greatly. Now I can scarcely think of 2-3 players and 5 teams are bidding for them...

I suggested him a few weeks ago. However now we've got Mourinho there's basically no chance of it. Fantastic player but doesn't do any defensive work at all really.

We need to sign two RWF's imo. Whilst Lingard is squad player material, he's significantly better playing on the left than he is on the right. Mata causes us to be lopsided. Valencia could probably still do a decent job on the wing, and I remember being enamored with his perofrmance against Argentina() but we need a minimum of one attacking full back playing as an attacking full back at all times. With Shaw's tibia fracture which ruled him out for 261 days, it wouldn't be unprecedented for him to take time to acclimatize to the rigors of EPL football, or forbid to get another injury, or being more positive, just not play every game. Of course, if we made the acquisition of a young attacking full back like Joao Cancelo or Almamy Traore, then it could be a legitimate option. Mourinho once said, “Adnan is fantastic. Let’s be honest, he’s not really 18 — he’s 25! The boy is so mature and comfortable and he is a very good and important player. He for sure can have a great long-term career. I don’t know the lad individually — but he has got the lot.” Although, Mourinho gave him praise, and although he was playing as a winger albeit a freeroaming playmaking one at a time, I can't envisage Jose using him often as a RWF. Whilst, being deceptively quick, I'm not sure that would suffice given he's recently had the likes of Cuadrado and Salah to be his second choice, and they're by all indications speed merchants. And it isn't as if Januzaj is a workhorse either, given his weak defensive contribution and according to Whoscored, he has very weak discipline.

I don't think Januzaj should be ruled out entirely. He seems to have lost his way over the last year, but with an attacking midfield and some confidence from the manager he can still be a class player perhaps. Many of the players we have been linked with are equivalents to Adnan after his break out year. The likes of Dembele, Ounas or Sane were also 18 year olds who had great debut seasons like Januzaj, and there is no telling they would not suffer similar dips.

I remember how Mourinho was talking about Adnan during that year before we went to the Bridge. 'This is not a normal 18 year old, he is 25' etc. Hypothetically, alongside Zlatan and Martial, and in front of Pogba/Herrera (don't get caught up with these hypotheticals) - he could still possibly shine. He is gifted.

Agree with you. I think he has more future under Mourinho than Mata and Lingard. IMO we should buy a new right winger and he should be 2nd choice.

Agree. Mata basically has no future, especially out wide, and I'm not overly convinced by Lingard. Adnan has shown he has a lot of potential but we'd be foolish not to try to strengthen at the position based on how little he has done in the last two years. Hopefully gets a decent amount of playing time there though.

That said, if he did want to come here, we would get him. He is still technically owned by Juve so there's nothing Bayern can do if we agree a price with Juve which shouldn't be a problem at all given the low buy out clause in the Bayern loan deal.

Have read reports on various websites that our French scout really, really rates Adam Ounas and our interest in him is legit. If I'm not wrong, then he plays at the right wing aswell.

Kingsley Coman, posted by a few on here, great prospect, would also be very happy to see Griezmann and/or Mahrez come in.

I've heard that scout will be replaced so some of the links to players may be old, or may be legit never know

Yes and then juventus has to pay a 100million € fine and coman will get a 5 year ban from the CAS. Seems very realistic.

Could you tell me why seeing as it's obvious I'm missing something rather than simply wading in with a smart ass response before fecking off?

Ok, sorry for that. I don't think it's in juventus' hands what happens with Coman. Otherwise the buyout clause would be pointless. Bayern probably has to let the deadline for the clause pass or juventus has to find an agreement with bayern to be able to sell Coman to someone else. Otherwise juventus and probably coman would break the contract.

I guess you're right. A 3yr loan with an option to buy for a fixed price is the seal so it's most likely a 3yr stay at Bayern till they either sign him or send him back. Only if they sell him back does he become available for Juve to flog. This brings something else that's interesting up. He must be on a very cheap contract as he was just a kid with potential who barely played for Juve. A year later, everything has changed so how long before he demands he wither be signed and given the contract he's worth or sent back to Juve where he could get the same?

@Balu What's the status with Coman in terms of his contract? Any noises of signing him up early as you'd need to give him a contract which reflects his worth?

I think it's a 2yr loan, so one year left. I don't think it would make much sense in financial terms to buy him now since it would increase the risk and basically give juventus a 1yr 21million € loan for free. It would send a sign to the player though.

Ofcourse, it doesn't make sense from a financial POV. Why buy when you can have him for free for another year and that too at whatever cheap contract he must have been on a year back. I was thinking more of from Coman's POV, guy must want a new contract after the year he's had.

I think Lingard, but personally I'd like to keep Mata as cover for there and more central too.

It's fair to say that Lingard - though a decent player should not be our long-term starting option for the right wing.

We're seriously lacking an outlet that can take players on and provide some sort of creativity from that right side. Mata initially was very patchy there and doesn't really have the required attributes to pose a threat out wide, playing Memphis there pretty much removes his biggest strengths in cutting inside and he's never really played there, Martial also hasn't been convincing enough there and it's fair to say that it's not something we can solve with our internal options as Januzaj's development is questionable.

Some names to throw; Felipe Anderson, Bernardeschi, Inaki Williams, Bellarabi, Mina, Feghouli, Lucas Moura, Bernardo Silva, Berardi who are all pretty attainable (if we don't get Champions League football) unlike the Bale's and Griezmann's of the transfer market.

Felipe Anderson

It really depends on what wages he's on right now. If he's on peanuts, we probably should do something about it. If he's happy with his contract for now, maybe he prefers to prove his quality for another year? If he becomes a regular starter, he can demand much more money than right now. So it could make sense for Coman to wait another year to sign a longterm contract.

Isn't he the guy who recommended us Pogba and Martial? Would be strange if true.

He must be on a very cheap contract. He had barely featured for Juve. It's all on him really, unless he pushes for it, makes no sense for Bayern to take the initiative.
