Right Back

Distin and Alcaraz are leaving Everton. They desperately need a centre back. Coleman isn't rated highly here which surprises me. He has pace, can defend, always available going forward, and the thing that sets him apart from Valencia, his crosses are often aimed at a teammate, that is a major plus. A bid of around 10m + Johnny Evans would be good business.

Rafael is better than all of those we've been linked to. He just have to avoid all those freak injuries, and we'll have one of the top RBs in the world.

When you start seeing van der Wiel and Clyne as genuine options you know it's time to stick with Valencia.
Not really cos Clyne is better than Valencia. I actually don't think Valencia is bad at full back either so they would be healthy competition for each other.

He's really not - I don't know where this myth comes from apart from that fact that he looks very enthusiastic when he plays, which fans love I guess. Fabio was as good as Rafa when he had that spell in the team, and look where he is now.

Personally I don't think he's better than Valencia, his touch and control are not as good and he makes just as many positional errors.

Well, I disagree 100% but you are entitled to your opinion :)

Anyone ever seen cedric soares from sporting? Just been reading that Southampton want to replace clubs with him if he leaves.

Prefer Coleman to Clyne myself, but who the feck knows? Anyone but Valencia please. Not sure why LVG doesn't rate a healthy Rafael (I understand this is rarely the case but he was one of our best players two years ago).

That is the problem isn't it, he can't do that.

Edit: what do people think about Montoya ?
With Alves staying and Aleix Vidal signing he'll want out as being third choice. They also promised him more game time but he didn't get it. I think he can be a good player for us.

He will never be the best RB in the PL nevermind the world....he is not good enough.

He can't rate what he has never seen. Perhaps he believes it doesn't even exist !

How about Janmaat ?

Had a promising season, he's 25, Dutch and is used to the Prem. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens if we go for someone else but miss out.

He's not a bad player or anything, but this sort of discussion is why missing out on Alves was a blow. Carvajal wanting to compete with Danilo instead of leaving doesn't help either. If there was ever a time for our scouting people to earn their money, it's at RB.

People keep dissing Van Der Wiel because Janmaat made the world cup team ahead of him under Van Gaal but tonight against Latvia it was visa versa with Van Der Wiel getting his game under Hiddink.......maybe he wasn't fit during world cup..who knows

Van der Wiel was injured during the WC. Going forward he's great, he links up well and has a good cross. Defensively he's suspect though. He's not a terrible player some make him out to be, but I doubt van Gaal is interested. The Netherlands currently don't have a fixed rightback.

Always found Janmaat a bit suspect defensively whenever I watched him play for Newcastle. He has a decent attacking game though but it isn't good enough to compensate for his defensive deficiencies imo.

I think "great" is overstating it. He's good going forward and a decent athlete when healthy, but he wouldn't be a huge improvement on Valencia linking up with Herrera and Mata.

we have been saying the sme thing for years though. If his injuries cost us 5-10 points again next year then I've had enough

The fact Janmaat is even getting a mention is an indicator as to how few options there are.

I think van der Wiel will be an upgrade going forward on Valencia, at least he has an end product. Defensively we'd lose solidity though, that's why I'm pretty sure we're not after him anyways. VdW said himself he wants to stay at PSG too and I'd rather have Clyne as he's more an all-rounder.

Janmaat is a workhorse but also prone to stupid mistakes, that's why he hasn't cemented his place as the Netherlands rightback yet. Think we could do better than him.

Just keep a player in the treatment room for long enough and he'll become the next Pele.

He's already been the best right back in the PL in Fergies last season. He's had a tough time since then though. People say his stock seems to have risen with the injuries. But that's absolute nonsense, it has actually plummeted and many people have just completely forgotten how good he actually can be.

NO Janmaat NO Van Der Wiel. We don't have to go Dutch.

Just spend £30m on Carvajal? Problem solved :D

Darmian is a defensive midfielder playing full back for Italy because, like everyone else, they don't have a decent natural right back. I don't know how he'd feel about playing his club football at right back.

He's been playing fullback at Torino hasn't he?
