Assuming we are going to buy one (i have sneaky suspicion LVG likes Valencia in that position) who are our options?

Who do you want?

Alves, Clyne, Darmian and Coleman are the obvious names I've seen repeatedly mentioned here. They would all be varying degrees of fine, I'm just wondering which we'll go for.

Though I've just seen Alves appears to be off the table. So that's one down.

Can still see us going for Clyne, would prefer Coleman though. Never really seen Darmian or other candidates.

I seem to remember us being quite keen on coleman for a while in the middle of the season. Doesn't inspire me, but none of the options do!

Darmian. The fact that most of Europe's top clubs have shown an interest should be reason enough. There don't seem to be many stand out candidates mind.

Van Gaal clearly doesn't fancy Rafael, looks like Alves has just signed a new contract, Coleman or Clyne could do a good job but neither would be cheap, I've never seen this Darmian play for his club but he keeps being linked with Barca so he must be decent, I can't think of anyone else other then Valencia who is clearly not good enough.

If both Alves and Darmian are off the table then that really just leaves Coleman and Clyne?

Coleman is the better player but Clyne might be the better bargain. That plus the fact that he's English, available and the player we've been most firmly linked with makes me think he's who we'll ultimately end up with.

Here's hoping for the next Philipp Lahm.

Also worth remembering that we might be interested in Schneiderlin as well as Clyne. Remember how our interest in Baines complicated the Fellaini bid? For all we know the Clyne might have been the target all along but we've eased off as part of some obscure negotiating tactic or something.

RB options dropping like flies. i'll take practically anyone at this point, if it means Valencia doesn't start.

He is not, milan keep playing him as a left back and then he got injured!

We aren't going to replace one injury prone RB with another injury prone RB (who's not even any better than Rafa anyway). He's missed 30 league games in 2 seasons through injury!

Unless there is a top quality option available I am more than happy with Valenica

I'll take even Clyne at the moment.

Coleman has been my preferred choice for ages, I can't think of a reason not to go for him.

Clyne would be fine though and it would seem a simple transfer for us to do given his contract is down to the last year and Southampton have been very easy to buy players from in recent years.

He had one big injury(on his heel) which kept him out for so long. Dont think he missed much games other than that though, the only thing I will hold against him is that his attacking game isnt that good but is better defensively. That might change playing on the right, with his favored foot.

at the moment im just happy Alves isn't coming, i dont want to see us gong down the road of signing players coming to the end of thier careers on massive money multi year deals. we should be building a team not trying to coax the last bits of football out of aging players

i would like to see Clyne come, beyond that im not to that fused if we stick with Rafeal and Valeincia, i think thier are far bigger priorities this summer, namely and Defensive midfielder and a Center Back (and probably a goalkeeper)

Look at TM and you'll see that in the past 2 seasons his injury record is awful. He's one to miss mate.

the Rafael LVG could have played for half a season but chose not to? what makes you think he'll change his mind now?
The OP says who do you want. I assume he wants Rafael. As do I. I'd be very happy with him as our first choice RB.

I don't think it'll happen but still.

Coleman
Clyne
Darmian

Coleman would be my choice. Given them Evans + 5m.

Why pi$$ about? Offer Ivanovic 3 years & £150k a week, job done. At worst it rocks their boat a bit.

Well this is depressing.

At this point I'll take anyone over suffering another season of tony v

Coleman would cost a fair bit more than that though, which I guess is one of the points in Clyne's favour.

Now that Alves isn't an option, I'd like us to keep Rafael, stick with Valencia and save the money. I think Valencia has earned the spot, unspectacular but quite solid. I've been one of his staunchest critics previously but I don't understand why he's getting so much stick for this season.
