Gaming Retro Video Game Thread

I loved Golden Axe, but I agree - Sega was all about Sonic. Sonic was brilliant, absolutely brilliant - pretty sure I still remember the title screen glitch for unlocking all the levels too

up, down, up, down, a, b, c, start ?

up, down, left, right, a, b, c, start ?

Something like that - I'd look it up but that would ruin it.

I don't think I ever knew there was a level select cheat.

You need to make a thread for platformers Olly - you know your shit, and I'm always looking for new platformers to play! This Crash Bandicoot 2 replay has made me consider whether it's my favourite platforming game ever - not the best ever, for sure, but my favourite.

Good idea. I have to go out in a little while but I'll do it when I get back

I have a Mega Drive collection on my Vita, really need to dig into Phantasy Star, supposed to be proper good, I remember it being good.

Golden Axe was a classic, interesting difficulty system, if you play on easy, one of the earlier bosses is the final boss and the game ends.

I have the Mega Drive Collection on the PS3 and it's got Golden Axe and Phantasy Star on it so I'll have to give those to a try sometime.

You didn't know the sonic cheat? Goodness. They were all the same for the games and you hear a little chime when you get it right.

My memory, rightly or wrongly, is telling me it was
up, down, left, right, a, start

Finally got round to ordering Solstice. Also got Nintendo World Cup at the same time as it looked pretty mad  Not bad for a fiver for those two.

I don't know about that one but I had the sequel, Re-Loaded, and yeah it was a bit
Not actually bad games, tbh, just insane.

I was reading up on Actua games(also by Gremlin Interactive), and I thought they were generally badly regarded, but according to wiki, they were rated. Fun games, really.

I don't think I've ever played any of those Actua games series. I remember seeing them on shelves and stuff, but I always ignored them. I think the problem might have been the covers. They make them look a bit like budget games IMO, so maybe that's what I though back then.

Tbh, most of my memories of them come from demo discs, I don't think I've ever seen copies for sale IRL.

Yeah it's really good, definitely recommended.

Anyone play Super Mario Land 2? I always hear people talk about the first (which I love) but the second rarely gets mentioned. I like how weird and different it is.

Oh i will! I have so much i have to play already though! Got to plough through FFVII first and i need to play Zelda Ocarina of Time to pop my Zelda cherry.

Don't know about retro, but i ordered Dark Cloud and all the .hack games today. (^^,)

I absolutely have to try doing one.

I can just imagine a whole set of custom controllers for my favourite games

Of course if I actually try to do one it'll come out looking like arse but in my head it looks amazing.

Anyone ever have a problem with a Mega Drive controller where you have to press the buttons down harder than usual to make them work, and then fixed it?

If I could choose one game from years gone by to have a proper sequel or remake, better graphics and more features added while keeping the same feel and fun factor it would be Theme Hospital.

Sadly if it were to be remade you'd probably have a basic hospital with all the staff, fittings and machinery all sold separately in £4.99 DLC's.

I got that in a small bundle of PS1 games a couple of years ago, haven't played it though.

With the second point, as it would be developed/published by EA I think it's safe to say that would definitely be the case unfortunately.

Have you ever played it?

It's a fantastic game, classic Bullfrog humour. Very addictive game play and actually a challenge on the hardest setting unlike most of today's games.

I think I had a demo of it on a PC disc years ago. From what I can remember though I didn't pay too much attention to it so wasn't really sure what the hell I was supposed to be doing.

Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

Amazing game! I love bullfrog, loved the Dungeon Keeper games too.
