Retro Football Fantasy Championship

This is kps88's second pick which I thought was an interesting one, a player not many younger people here will be familiar with but nevertheless very illustrious.

Kps88 picks Inter Milan and Italy goalkeeping legend Walter Zenga.

Talk about retro football - he's definitely a candidate to be in retro-porn

Brwned, I despise you.

:D

Can't go wrong with either of them really, dominant in defence and dominant in the middle, just get a playmaker in there and I'm flying. Had to get Rijkaard because there's very few great centre mids outside of Matthaus and himself. A few excellent playmakers yet but when it comes to finding a bit of balance in the middle there won't be many exceptional players.

Quite a few from the 50s like Cerezo, Tardelli, Robson, Tigana, Breitner, Neeskens and co. for players who could stick a foot in and play a bit, not so many from the 60s. Even in terms of playmakers you had the likes of Susic, Brady, Hoddle, Giresse, Schuster, Socrates, Zico, Platini and co. in the 50s - quite a few of them just missing out, sadly!

Indeed, Gullit was my initial first choice, if I had picked a few minutes earlier I would have gone for him but at the last moment I decided to switch to Baresi.

Feck me, a big part of my ideas for my second pick has gone now, I dislike all of you.

In gullit and kohler, i'm definitely putting together the best cast for an 80s porn flick. Maybe venison will get the call after all.

Fernando Hierro

Long time captain of Real Madrid. Got out before the galactico frenzy reached its heights. Only Villa and Raul have scored more goals for Spain.
Get him in early because he can play as CB or DMC.

Enigma deserves to stay in the game, ffs just because the lad didnt log on the caf for one day we punish him?

I propose we just wait for him

This is Nani Nana's last post and he hasn't been online since - perhaps he went off in a strop?

Or he's Serbian and has work/school in the morning (he's Serbian right? Or lives there abouts)

Ah well, I might do the same if he doesn't turn up in the next half hour or so. I'll log on in the morning

And to be fair it has moved quickly since then - as I did with Kps88, I will post on your behalf to keep things going.

Indeed, Gullit was my initial first choice, if I had picked a few minutes earlier I would have gone for him but at the last moment I decided to switch to Baresi.

Don't think many managers would argue with that, Baresi'd be one of the first choices in almost any XI he was available for, which I'm not sure you can say of Gullit? Getting versatile players in the early stages does have a real advantage in the latter stages though.

Was Gullit unquestionably one of the best midfielders of the last few decades? Watched him in the '88 Euro Final and the '90 EC Final and he was arguably overshadowed by both Rijkaard and Van Basten in each. Means nothing in the grand scheme of things and I'm not suggesting they were better players I was just a little surprised because I went in thinking he'd be amazing. He looked a strange kind of attacking midfielder, without the technical brilliance or vision you'd usually associate with one playing in that position and looked more suited to being a monstrous all-round midfielder type. Seen very few players with such an impressive physique though.

Alas I am too young to have seen the Dutch side of the late eighties, I only caught many of those players in the tail end of their careers. I'd choose Gullit for his extraordinary ability to play across the midfield despite as you say, not being as technically gifted as the great playmakers, Ramires reminds me of him in many ways but naturally is nowhere near his level.

Seeing him come to Chelsea was absolutely astonishing, most of Chelsea players circa 1995 were pretty solid and could do a job but were not exactly flamboyant in their play, then Ruud Gullit comes along akin to an enlightenment - considering he was well into his thirties by this point, his command of the games he played in was astonishing. We talk about the likes of Cantona and Bergkamp and Zola beginning the present era of English football but you could make the argument the arrival of Gullit is what kicked it off, whilst those three were brilliant technical players, none of them were that close to being voted European footballer of the year multiple times.

I must admit the reason I chose Zenga this early was I have very limited knowledge of the keepers in that era. I only had around 5 names in mind, out of which 2 were already taken. I needed to get that position out of the way as quickly as possible.

keepers being chosen early is interesting.
most of the names picked so far, i got to see at least a little of.

I'm going for Gheorghe Hagi, 'the Maradona of the Carpathians'. One of the best attacking players of his generation known for his spectacular long range goals, his fantastic dribbling and control, instrumental of the success of unfancied Romania making into 6 top tournaments (3 WCs and 3 ECs) in the 1990s (and mostly exceeding expectations when they got there).

Highly regarded as an attacking talent, he was voted 25th best player of the 20th Century by FIFA at the turn of this century (yes, it was Pele's dodgy list, but go back to the mid-nineties and he was genuinely regarded as one of the greatest at that time). One of the only players to play for both Real and Barca, he also brought notable success at club level to Galatasaray and unfancied Steaua Bucharest (who reached the European Cup semis, and final in consecutive seasons due to his influence)
