C'mon IBR and DanNistelrooy pick your picks, so we can wrap this up.

Well, now we've finally brought this to an end (Dan having one pick left, which I doubt will change much to what I write here), I'd like to congratulate each and every one of you for the great job and entertainment you provided all the way through this picking process. I must admit to being bewildered by the volume of quality picks we churned out collectively, and it would be no shame for me to lose against any of you, considering how savvy we all proved here.

Really impressed by the thoroughness of everyone's research, and I think I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say we are gutted at the picks we narrowly missed out on (innit crustanoid?). I'm sure all of us are somewhat discontent with our selection, which goes to show the quality of the overall batch of players.

I think there's a slight bias amongst posters towards more recent players (in terms of rating players and remembering how good they are). Players who thrived in the nineties are rated higher than those who were ripping up trees in the eighties - this is due to the average age of posters and the memories collectively of posters. For instance I chose Paolo Futre as a left winger who for a time in the late 80s was considered as highly as Ronaldo (Cristiano) is now (he almost broke Maradona's world transfer fee in 1989). I doubt many will remember this. I guess this sort of issue might be reflected in the voting.

That's obviously always going to be a problem with these old styled fantasy games. Any older players and I won't play because I simply could not make up an opinion. My oldest football memories are WC 94. I've got quite the few players who played there.

I think we naturally hark back to the era when we were first into football. For instance I don't get as big a boner for Zidane and Ronaldo as I do for Maradona and Platini

I pick Rafael Martín Vázquez

Over 200 caps for the Madrid team that dominated the Spanish league in the late 80s

As you were the last person to choose their last player, I hold you personally responsible for Barry Venison not being chosen.

The assigned stadiums are merely to add colour to the game, they do not have any material impact on the competition ie there is no influence (home advantage, crowd support, familiarity etc) on the players and the match at all

Polls will last 1 day, except for the semi-finals and final which will last 2 days. Polls are open to all Redcafe members to vote. However, managers and assistant managers must not vote in matches of their group nor the group which provides their next opponent in the knockout round (Managers and assistant managers of teams in Group A or B cannot vote in both Group A and B matches. Managers and assistant managers of teams in Group C or D cannot vote in both Group C and D matches). Non-compliance could result in expulsion from the competition. To enforce this, the votes in polls will be made public. 30 minutes before the poll closes, I will make a final call for votes. 5 minutes before the poll closes, I will post the votes tally and this will be the final result of the match.

Would a neutral non-participant be able to help with the draw? Pat Mustard or Duffer? Thanks in advance. Please disclose the draw only after the draft is completed ie all 16 teams have picked their squad of 12 players

How do we PM you our lineups so that they appear as a graphic? That was done before for a draft. Is there some sort of online formation thingy we can use?

Brwned's side (with a little help from his assistant, my good self)

I think he will set up something like this after our discussions (Polaroid, PM me if there are any issues or you need anything)

Fantastic balance and depth all over the park with flair in every area and a solid dependable core through the middle.

Fantastico.

PS - Mark Hughes on the bench (although the Gaffer might play him instead of Vialli or in a front two)

When do people vote on this? And when do matchday 2 people have to have their tactics ready by?

Only just seen the deadline! I will post something up in 5

David Seaman - Best English Keeper of the 90s with 75 caps for England and a bunch of domestic medals with Arsenal

Paul Parker - Reliable right back for United making over 100 caps, also finished with a respectable 15 international caps

Oscar Ruggeri - World cup winning centre half and Argentinian captain.

Frank Leboeuf - Euro and World Cup winner with France. With him and Ruggeri at the back my defence will be well organised

Clayton Blackmore - Comfortable on the ball and also very versatile. Has over 250 caps for United

Predrag Mijatović - Creative, goalscoring midfielder. 28 goals in 73 games for the national team and also an impressive 56 in 104 and 30 in 90 games for Valencia and Real Madrid.

Dunga (captain) - World cup winning captain.

David Platt - Another goalscoring midfielder. Also a scorer of important goals. An impressive 27 goals in 62 caps for England

Robert Jarni - Played for both Juventus and Madrid to go along with over 80 Croatian caps, Jarni will provide width for the team

Eric Cantona - Not much needs to be said about this man - a genius and one of those players who will inspire those around him

Les Ferdinand - a handful for any defence and a good goalscorer throughout his career. He will be a nuisance for the central defenders of the opposition, allowing Eric to work his magic

Matchday 1 kicking off in 5 minutes time!
Matchday 2 will be on 2 Jan 2012
Managers can PM their match-day line-ups and tactics to me by 2 Jan 2012, 1200 hrs
Thanks!

Why did you not come select any Arsenal players THM?

Polaroid - just so you know, I'm going to send my team and bits over via PM shortly. I know that this is probably early but with NYE and NYD both in the next 48 hours and me working for 24 of those 48 hours, I may not get chance to meet any deadlines.

Hope that this is ok?

Ranking of teams is determined by points, followed by head-to-head result
In the event of a tie for 1st place after completion of the round-robin stage, there will be a sudden-death match between the tied teams to determine the group winner

I would have thought that 'the score' in each tie would lend itself to goals scored and goal difference to be added to the group standings should they be required.

Using votes count as goal difference is tricky

Say after 3 group matches,
Team A has 4 points and a total score of 43-32, which translates to a GD of 11 and a vote share of 57.3%
Team B has 4 points and a total score of 30-20, which translates to a GD of 10 and a vote share of 60%
Their head-to-head result is 10-10
Team A has a higher GD but a lower vote share than Team B.
Which team should progress to the quarter-finals? Which team should be eliminated?
A solution would be to let them go head to head again until a winner emerges.

Team A, goal difference in the premier league doesn't assume anything with regard to goals scored or goals shared, it is purely a case of ranking teams primarily by the points and secondarily by their aggregate margin of victory.

Then of course you may get an instance where three of four teams tie on points, thus making head-to-head decisions complicated.

So what you are saying is that the team that beats an opponent 29-20 should be ranked higher than another team that beats the same opponent 14-6? that the team which has garnered a higher proportion of votes (70% vs 59.2%) among those who have voted should be eliminated because its winning margin in absolute number of votes is less (8 vs 9).

Do the rest agree with Brian's reasoning?

Or there could be a day where everyone on the caf decides to vote. Too many variables at play here - I go along with Polaroids rules. It would be better if more people were voting though - is there any way of 'publicising this better? Seems like the poll numbers are very low all round.

Gentle reminder to managers of teams in Group C and D
Matches will be on tomorrow. Those who have not sent me their line-ups, tactics and player profiles, please do so by 1200 hours tomorrow. Please name your substitute just below the formation graphic of your starting XI, thank you.

Poll numbers are roughly a third lower than the previous Older than Ronaldo Fantasy Competition. Maybe younger members of the Caf find it difficult to judge players they have not seen before so they are abstaining from voting.

Poll numbers are always too low for these things. No ones cracked the problem yet. My two pence is they'll do much better in the general. But I can understand why the mods wouldn't like that.

Other than that Polaroids' idea of letting Newbies vote is something that could work as well. EDIT: But that could backfire too since it would open things up to trolls who just joint. Ok that's me out of ideas.

I could put a poll in the newbies every time no problem, I just don't think it's worthwhile. I don't really see the issue with the number of votes, it's hardly surprising it doesn't interest many people.
