Renato Sanches

I think it's difficult for people to see that when compared to other midfield talents he doesn't match up. I've seen more talent in Ben Pearson and Charni Ekangamene. But hey, there were not heavily linked with United as the creme dela creme, with overrated price tags.

Oh wow.

Holy shit, Sanches, a player that is consistently starting games for Benfica, whom is on top of their league and is playing in the quarter-finals of CL, is said to be less talented than Ekangamene, who barely even plays for a mediocre Belgian team, as well as Pearson, who is hardly lighting the League 1 up.

Don't change caf, don't ever change.
Pearson plays in the Championship.

You guys are just milking comments. I said I have seen more talent in Pearson and Ekangamene. Sanches is just known for his energy, that's all. If you have ever watched Pearson or Ekangamene, you would know that they had more strings in their bow. Both had tonnes of energy and were more technically adept than Sanches. If Pearson played in the Portuguese league he will be easily match Sanchez's hype. I will leave this to those who have watched enough of Pearson and Sanches to judge this.

Sanches is a far stronger athletes and he is showing that he is not out of place in a team like Benfica. So while I don't understand the particular hype, I have to disagree with your comparison.

I'm not making a direct comparison. They're of course different types of players. The whole argument on this thread has been whether he justifies the hype. It is not whether he can become world class or not. My point has always been that he is not showing enough to gather such hype, to be a potential good player, yes but not the standards that is been branded about. At 18, Pearson showed mode than one attribute, albeit not refined which is more than what Sanches is currently known for.

I have watched Sanches at least 10 to 12 times this season and this has been the basis of my arguments. Not YouTube or highlights. I took an interest in Benfica this season to watch Goncalo Guedes, another Benfica player that was hyped in epic proportions. I almost fell for it too especially after the sale of Markovic to Liverpool. It was in that period till that I noticed Sanches, and my conclusion is that what he is good at, energy and drive, he is awesome but overall, he is nowhere near the level of 18 year old CMs that are in the world class bracket.

Portugal is a third rate league don't you know? My grandmother would look like Ronaldinho playing there. The caf is right all the damn time. Sanches is not United quality. I'd rather even have Daron Gibson back. He had techniques for dayz

Come on, Loulou!

Is that fair, if I say that he is Enzo Perez quality at best? That's pretty good for an 18 years old player but that's not good enough for United yet, and the "yet" is key only time will tell us if he is developing well, only time will give us a good indication of his potential.

No. You haven't.

Charni Ekangamene (born 16 February 1994) is a Belgian footballer who plays as a midfielder for OH Leuven, on loan from Zulte Waregem. Born in Antwerp, he began his career with Royal Antwerp before moving to their English sister club,Manchester United, in 2010. Having failed to break into the first-team, he was loaned to Carlisle United in January 2014, before making a permanent move back to Belgium with Zulte Waregem in July 2014.

It's based on both having watched them plenty and, in Charni's case, his quite clearly demonstrating he's not as talented as a kid starting for a CL team by having gone on to fail to get games at a Belgian second division side :wenger:

Benfica would prefer to keep him for another season, but we want to add him to Martial and Shaw to have three of the best young players in the world in our squad. According to the article, Mourinho wanted to sign him for Chelsea, but failed.

Bargain. Sign him up.

At 18 Pearson was playing under 18s football while Sanches is playing in the Champions League and International football. I get what you're saying about seeing different things in players games but comparing what you see in a player at under 18 level with a player playing senior football is completely pointless considering how many different factors there are like time on the ball, pace of the game and standard of both team mates and opposition players. If you stuck Sanches into an under 18s team right now you'd see a lot more of his qualities a lot easier and he'd completely stick out as he did in his couple of under 19 games in the Uefa Youth League and for Portugal's underage sides

Three of the best young players in the world is a huge stretch. That price is ludicrous, maybe we can put a deposit on him and see how he does next season.

Thank you for getting my point. It's not that Pearson would have been a world class but you could tell he had this and that in his locker, whether it could be refined is another thing.

So, anyone watched him for Portugal tonight? How'd he do?

Average. He entered in the second half and had clear indications to be more defensive and close down. He was a bit nervous which was natural (only his second cap). It will be hard for him to go to the Euro (since we have so many chances in the midfield) but he is young and if he keeps evolving, he will have more chances. João Mário was the real highlight on our midfield tonight.

It's clear Benfica are demanding a Martial kind of fee and we are desperate to close a deal before Bayern and the lot come along.
The Portugese journo for Sportwitness reckons we'll be the ones to cave.

Fecking hell, that João Mário guy looked some player! Really impressed with him, real shame he went off at halftime.

I thought Renato Sanches did well, especially in the first ten to twenty minutes or so but that was maybe because I kept an eye out for him in the beginning. Impressed to learn he's only 18 years old. Definitely a bigger talent than William Carvalho if you ask me.

I remember you being impressed with Joao Mario's progress last season Sly, ha she had a good season this term?

I've not seen any club but United linked to him, I can't see Bayern desperately trying to sign him in truth, sounds like we are getting conned if we are buying into the price they want.

Yeh can't see Bayern, Barca being interested at the price being quoted. They aren't desperate for midfielders. The Mail is also carrying the same story that we are still trying to negotiate his fee and have watched him extensively. We must think he's worth it fo we are going through all this stress.

I honestly don't see it at all but if we are dead set then I imagine it will end up structured like Martial's is, there's no way we are going to pay that fee up front. I just hope if we buy him instead of a finished product like Kante who can do everything he can but is better on the ball, that we also add a proper playmaker in because whatever Sanches is, he's not a playmaker.

I am confident we will be signing more than one midfielder this summer. It's likely Fellaini and Carrick will be off.

Haven't watched Sanches enough to form an adequate opinion on him, but I think Shaw and Martial are in that category. I guess our scouts rate him highly and apparently so does Jose.

I think we're going to sign him regardless of who's manager.

Seems to be the case.

He was impressive. His off the ball movement is very good and he closed down the opposition pretty effectively. I pity the players he's ordered to mark. Boy is a bully

We'll definitely need that Carrick replacement, I guess Sanches will compete with Schneiderlin for the workhorse role.

Shaw was on the cusp but he's missed 2 seasons, Martial I'd agree on.

We rarely buy over the mangers head but it's possible, however for the price I'd think we'd want the player to be one the manager wanted.

Utter nonsense.

Hasn't impressed me in the three times I have seen him. Don't really get the hype. Might be due to my general aversion with midfielders who aren't very impressive with the ball and have not got a good range of passing. We already have Schneiderlin to fill that category; don't need another.

Yeah João Mário has been our best midfielder this year. He and Adrien have been the driving force at Sporting. He is very talented, excellent technic and has been working on his intensity and being more aggressive, which was something he was lacking. Jorge Jesus influence on him has been notorious and he has adapted well to playing as RW. I think he will be a starter for Portugal at the Euro since Fernando Santos really like his ability to play multiple positions. Atlético Madrid is very interested on him but he will be very expensive.

Look there is alot of overhyping regarding Renato Sanches. Not saying he doesn't have potencial to become a very good player but the hype and the supposed asking price/bids are ridiculous. He's an 18 year old with half a season in the portuguese league. He has been alright in the Champions League and got two caps which shows his talent but you need to prove alot more than that to warrant a big move. Look at Gonçalo Guedes who was the next big thing but after half a season he is either at the bench or not being called up at all. You have to give Sanches more time. You say he's a bigger talent than Carvalho but Carvalho has already played one World Cup, also played reasonably in the Champions League and was U21 Euro player of the tournament. Sanches may have potencial but let's see if he can keep up the level and evolve. Yesterday he was average (and all the press agreed) but it was only his 2nd cap at 18 years of age, so he has that excuse. And after what i wrote yesterday regarding his Euro call up, one of the best portuguese managers Manuel José said today that it's too soon for him to be called up, so it's something pretty obvious to see (specially with the number and level of choices that we have in the portuguese midfield).

I think he should be part of the squad to be honest, would hold him in good stead ahead of future tournaments.

He would probably go in the Paulo Bent era when our choices for the midfield were Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles. Now we have so many midfield options (Tiago, João Moutinho, Danilo, Adrien, William Carvalho, João Mário, André André, Rafa, André Gomes and Bernardo Silva) it will be hard for him to get picked. Like i said he is very young and he will have more chances if he keeps evolving.

What are the chances of Rubén Neves going? He's injured at the moment isn't he?

Sanches playing for Benfica Under-21's against Chelsea last October in the Premier League International Cup.

Zero. He isn't injured, he is playing in our Olympic u23 team since we qualified to Brazil.

At the same time if United are desperate to sign him then they have scouted him from all age groups. The example would be Martial. Appatently we have been following him for years before his big 12 months with Monaco yet it was made out we made a rash decision on a rookie we had hardly seen.
Rooney is another. We tried to sign him 3 times before his Everton breakthrough year.
I'm sure we will stagger his payments as ee have with Martial. Benfica wont miss out if he is a success and we cover ourselves if he fails.

Apparently, British journos spoke to Portugese officials at the game last night who said we are still in negotiations. That's where the renewed stories emanate from.

Oh right assumed he was injured when I saw he wasn't playing for the under 21's the other night. How's he been going for Porto this season?

Spent a considerable amount of time on the bench.
