Religion, what's the point?

Oates, why not ask me about infant baptism? Why not ask me about baptism by sprinkling, immersion, etc?
Well I'd be too worried we'd have another 3 pages of diversion/distraction/putting your head between your legs and kissing your bum goodbye Herman.

Why on Earth would I ask you any more questions when we've still not had answers to questions already asked?

Anyone else done with this wum?

YAWN.

Still frightened to explain how his church is superior....

Herman - I'm interested now. Straight up yes or no question - do your pastors/elders encourage you to tithe?

So far, your failure to answer this question is indicating that the answer is clearly yes. Can you confirm/deny please?

Herman, Jesus said "This is my Body". Not "This represents my body".

The texts fully support the Catholic position as I demonstrated in the links I sent you. The Hebrews text you quote has nothing to do with transubstantiation. The Pope is the successor of Peter and Peter was given authority by Jesus, as Matthew 16:18-19 clearly states, with no wriggle room. I'm not going to continue saying the same things to you, as unfortunately you have been taken in by a modern-day sect with has received no authority from anyone but Terry Virgo. Cheerio and good luck.

Bollocks and bollocks with all due respect.

What do I know, I'm an agnostic who had the misfortune of enduring 6 years in a Christian school

It's interesting who's being called a wum in this thread when you make persistent comments like this. I almost feel like telling you exactly what you told me when I asked about your sister's church, which is that my personal matters are none of your business and your presumption that you have a right to demand them from me is possibly the most arrogant, petty and and unChristian thing I've had to deal with today. But I will offer you this olive branch. I did not, at any stage, claim my church was superior to every other, I have simply professed adherence to the gospel of Jesus Christ. My comments in this thread are testimony to that. I even said that even if I belonged to a heretical church, it would not mitigate any of the points I have made. Not a single one. So now's your opportunity to drop it or to continue with the embarrassing and infantile character assassination you are attempting of somebody who is, according to the scriptures you claim to know and embrace, a brother in Christ.

I will not answer red herrings, no matter what conclusions are made from my silence, because I refuse on principle to ignore the central issue and to play this game.

It's interesting that the most mature conversations I've had in this thread are with people who aren't Christians. That should be a shame to those who claim to be.

But you still feel free to slur another denomination but can't answer any questions on how your Elders are Appointed/Elected/Annointed.

No answer on what principles your church is founded on.

Won't answer simple questions on how your church is funded and how the congregation are encouraged to give.

Which of the above do you find particularly personal? Are they a bit difficult? Perhaps if you can't answer then that might lead people to think that your church is just another sect with cult-like behaviours Herman.

Maybe we should have a poll on who is the wum my friend.

The hole gets deeper.

What is the standard we judge churches by, oates? Is it the Bible? If it's the Bible, does my criticism of other other churches have to rest on anything more than the Bible?

So, still no answers.

It's pretty simple Herman, you slur a denomination and you get an opportunity to prove that your denomination is the true church. Just by answering some itty bitty questions.

We're still waiting.. watching you wriggle...

The true church? That's a mistake the Roman Catholic's make, oates. By making such a church the standard of truth you move the standard of truth from scripture to a man-made institution.

Biblical criticism constitutes a slur? So how do you practise discernment, oates? Also, one of the questions you asked (concerning the way my own church is funded) above was answered in a previous comment by me, a number of pages ago. What that says to me is that you have absolutely no interest and want to continue with your practise of deflection because you don't know how to make a case for your position from the scriptures. And to make it worse, you continue to take delight in goading me.

Herman is the perfect example of why I hate religion. No reason to think that without all this brainwashing he couldn't be a lot more reasonable and open-minded person. Instead, he'll just try and continue the cycle.

How can someone with proper education, good dominion over his language, patience to spend hours reading books, come to think like this? I don't understand. As such, I'm going to chose to believe he's a wum, because it's easier for me to make that assumption than to think about a chain of a lot more complex events, or to accept I'll never fully understand these events. One assumption based on nothing, which may or may not be truth, the best solution for lazy feckers like me: WUM.

Ah I see what you did there Herman, now it's me deflecting is it? lol.

So if you answered how your church was funded then perhaps you can just confirm whether your elders encourage tithing?

You slurred a denomination Herman, that's hardly Biblical Criticism Herman, thats immature and personal and saying that just because your church claims to follow the bible strictly doesn't explain how you are superior does it? So explain what principles you are founded on, how your Elders are appointed etc.

I mean, it's hardly personal asking you to back up your rudeness with some facts is it?

We just want the facts Herman,. Just the facts. Eventually...

You've been the one deflecting for comment after comment, page after page, ad nauseam. I don't know who "we" is, either. Is this the Royal "we" or do you speak for everybody else?

No answers then.

Ad nauseum.

No, it's the Biblical 'we', Pocco asked about tithing too Herman, keep up. (Biblical. Did you like that Herman?)

Oates, if you think he's a WUM - which I completely agree with - then do us all a favour and stop responding to him because it's pretty clear this discussion's going nowhere fast so we might as well try and stop this thread from being re-railed any further.

Apologies Brwnd, it's possible I may have found the answers elsewhere now. :)

That's the conclusion I came up with a while ago, stuff he says just makes no sense whatsoever.

You nailed it man. Thanks.

When I was 13 I had a girlfriend that was mormon. I went to the church with her family a couple of times. They then asked me for 10% of my paper round money. No way. Fecked her off sharpish.
What do these churches do with all this money? The priest next to my mum's house drives a really nice BMW.
Great business really. Selling without providing a product. It's like paying for a holiday and they just show you postcards.
Maybe I should start a religion myself. I could do with the money.

How can books with so much the are completely, utterly and obvioulsy wrong be used to help you form an opinion about anything much less be seen as source of all truth?

Is it accurate to say that the bible was put together by various councils of experts over time and they also rejected other works that were claimed to be the word of god?

Has Herman explained how Noah's Ark is real yet?

I was just debating this at work last week, that there's zero evidence of a giant ark, and that the science behind it doesn't work. I also brought up a man living inside a fish/whale for x days, talking snakes, burning bushes, etc. Told my friend, who studies religion, that had you never heard of all these stories growing up, and one day at per say age 21, a random person came up to you on the street and told you of all these stories and that it's true because the Bible says so... you'd think this person is insane.

Well, it seems that Bible Adventures has the answer.

Constantine had the biggest influence and if I recall, it's 27 books left out or missing. One of which is about Jesus from a young age into adulthood and reads like a mythical tale. But there's always a religious apology when missing books/canons are brought up. I guess God felt those works were shit and had them discarded. Kinda like his fecked up animal creations he tossed on the continent of Australia (no humans will ever find this land!).

So this book that christians use to rule how they live their lives because it was supposedly dictated by god was actually edited by various men who used unknown reasoning to decide what would and wouldn't be included from a number of authors?

It's Chinese whispers on a grand scale, basically.

It has good bit of life lessons here and there, but trying to use it as any sort of scientific evidence for anything is BS.

I mentioned earlier in the thread about the lost books of the bible. I remember an interview with Glenn Danzig where he talked about them and they detailed Jesus's childhood. I think the editor decided they didn't fit the image of the nice guy they wanted to portray.
Google it and there are many links saying they are not real but it is Christian groups that say that and they would. wouldn't they?

There is a particular belief and a very questionable evidence that Jesus spent his last days with his family in India in Kashmir. There is even a shrine built on his name. Of course I have no command on this at all so I'l just leave it at that.
