Refs & VAR 2020/2021 Discussion

It’s a tough call for the penalty. There’s definitely contact, but Martial does dive. Red seems incredibly harsh because he clearly pulled out of the tackle.

Bit mad unless Man. United get to 9 they're still behind Liverpool in GD stakes given we beat them 7-2 and I really can't think of many games Liverpool have won by more than 3 goals this season and they had the scoreless run recently.

That's expected from Mike Dean, twat always wants to be center of attention.

Slightly ruined my enjoyment of the game tonight has VAR to be honest

... Slightly.
Yeah... We've benefitted a bit today (but also had that pen disallowed for no reason)... but you don't like seeing this sort of shit in football. It's irrelevant to the result, but no way is that a red card (and was probably a dive from Tony)

That second red for them was ridiculous, I know by the rules it was a red but where's the common sense?

They're injury plagued already and now they're missing a player for a stupid suspension

VAR was on one today. Even if it did go our way on the Southampton goal. Some absurd decisions.

3 minutes added time... THREE minutes.

Genuinely took a very small shine off that win.

Hopefully the positive is it cant stay like this long. Farce.

I'm stunned anyone can watch that and even think its a foul. To send the lad off is an absolute disgrace. If they're the rules then the rules absolutely must change.

No, if Greenwood goes on 1vs1 and shoots that's the advantage granted.

(I think)
But if its so close and not given, does that make it a missed pen that VAR checks?
My point is, if theres any doubt in the decision, and it was reaaallly close, doesnt he have to leave it for the advantage?

I agree with VAR as a concept, but the implementation has been a joke. Arbitrary lines are drawn for decisions. Decisions that should be objective are still subjective, very weird.

Pen was soft but there's contact. The rule of him not going for the ball is silly. He tried to pull out and still touched Martial. To say it's a red because he didn't go for the ball is really harsh and sometimes you have to apply some context.

However overturning the pen in the 1st half was never clear and obvious, and we've had a few big calls go against us recently so we were due one.

It is so weird that football has gone all in on VAR. It works in Tennis because of the nature of the game, Cricket test matches would be over in the 2 days if they removed the umpires call leeway from decisions, the NBA only fully open it up in the last 2 mins of the game, NFL have a challenge system, Rugby is mainly for grounding and violent contact but football is changing the nature of the game to incorporate it.

Despise it, and it takes the professional game further away from the sport millions play at an amateur level every week.

I’d have given Martial a yellow if anything - I still haven’t seen the contact despite all the replays. Was very very soft.

Also quite comical seeing them choose an arbitrary line on a long sleeve top for offside although it was probably the right decision.

There’s so many issues with VAR at the moment. I don’t want to see them come out after this round of fixtures and change the bloody last man rule though.

It’s rubbish, but we can’t keep changing the rules mid season.

I don't even think the second red should be given under the rules. Was it a clear goal scoring opportunity after Martial's heavy touch?

Also think their disallowed goal was BS too.
The Cavani penalty incident was confusing as hell and should have been avoided entirely by passing advantage.

My other bugbear is linesmen not flagging for obvious offsides. Wan-Bissaka could have easily injured himself with that's brilliant tackle that wasn't even necessary. It was an obvious offside so flag it straight away.

And finally, how do give only 3 minutes added time after that? It just proves that added time is completely random and is usually pulled out of thin air. I get the game was well over as a contest, but what if we theoretically miss out on the title or top 4 by a single goal? Added time should be regulated.

I can't imagine anyone who thinks that is a foul/pen would think the same if it was the other way around... Or if that was Mo Salah and not Martial

VAR today was a complete farce. I was a huge supporter of it being implemented but they’ve slowly eroded that away.

Problem once again is the law , once the law is there you can't expect the ref to not use it like it's written because that would cause even more chaos

Ref not playing advantage for the first pen call was just wrong.

Not being a pen.. I dont understand the rules.. VAR checked it and decided it wasnt.. we'll find out if it was the wrong call (VAR makes mistakes too , which should be unacceptable.)

Same for the second red.. I'm sure it was right on a technicality.. but a red for that just seems ridiculous. surely there is some room for interpretation .

Offside for their goal.. offsides are pretty clear cut.. no room for interpretation there ..was off.. barely. Its always weird when lines are drawn for something that close.. but I have come to accept offsides as a factual yes/no thing and there is no point arguing over that.

so.. 1 bad refereeing call.. 2 VAR decisions I don't get.

It’s a disaster. Special mention for giving 3 minutes injury time when there was at least 6 minutes used on VAR. I’ll have to look that one up in the rules.

He catches him slightly with his right foot but Martial was already on the way down. Not a penalty for me. Once he gives the foul he has to give the red because he hasn’t tried to play the ball.

Awful outing for Mike Dean and VAR.

The non-penalty and not playing advantage was poor from both of them. Adams' disallowed goal was incredibly harsh and the lines they drew provided zero clarity. He looked level. Martial penalty was very soft, he definitely manufactured the contact, and the red card was needless. There was no serious foul play, he's clearly tried to pull away. I predict they'll get that one rescinded. And the yellow for timewasting was the cherry on top.

I don't even think the second red should be given under the rules. Was it a clear goal scoring opportunity after Martial's heavy touch?
I think that’s why they pulled it back it back a bit to see how far the ball was away from Martial. I’d say it was.

VAR is a nonsensical addition to the game, because even with it, the referees are making incorrect decisions.

Cavani should've had a penalty, Soton's offside goal should've stood and that was never a red and a pk at the end there.

Also, how the hell was stoppage time given as 3 minutes when the referee took well over 3 minutes on every review alone?

It's been a disaster, in my opinion. Goal line technology worked because it eliminated the margin of error. VAR just adds more uncertainty to decisions.

Mike Dean’s decision to give 3 mins was down to him not wanting United to score a 10th and his refereeing performance to be forever discussed as a key component of a historic game.

Shambles of a performance by the referees today.
