Reece James

Chelsea say 8 weeks. My guess is he’ll sit out the WC and aim to be back around the new year.

I hope I'm wrong but i wouldn't be shocked to see him try to force a recovery in time for the World Cup ala Rooney and Becks.

England have a ridiculous amount of RB/RWB options so although it's a blow, it's not a huge blow. Even outside of the 4 current RBs in the setup, there's Walker-Peters, Justin, White, AWB, Livramento, Maitland-Niles. Even RLC has played RWB for Chelsea this season. CHO has played there too. A fair few other half decent ones as well.

England are so stocked at RB/RWB that Cash and Lamptey elected to play for Poland and Ghana, if they were coming through 5-10 years ago they would have been regular fixtures at RB, or if they were LBs they'd probably be in contention for a start.

I think it’s obvious what’s happened here. Surgery refused and put off by James so he can make the WC.

Can imagine he makes it but sacrifices the rest of the season to do so and ends up needing surgery anyway.

Big miss for England if he does miss it and if there is any doubt at all he definitely should.
We all know how this ends if he tries to push through when he’s not fit.
I don’t trust Southgate to make the right decision…….

Yes but this may really harm his future prospect, you lot should know, remember Torres? Never the same afterwards.

You're not wrong but if you speak to any ex-player in their 40s and up, most have niggles and limps from not treating injuries properly because they wanted to play. It's the nature of the beast.

Yeah, an unfortunate facet of the game i suppose, hope he makes the right decision for his own sake, would be a shame otherwise.

This is true enough. Issue is with younger players the wrong decision can pretty much ruin the rest of their career.

So , knowing this, it would seem
Chelsea wanted to get that second opinion to try to convince him that surgery might be the better long term option even if it is just a partial tear. I doubt Chelsea sees the WC as worth any sort of risk . That would be a shame

6 to 8 weeks actually could be sufficient time for a partial on an LCL to heal fine. BUT, the danger then becomes wading into a tournament without your legs fully under you, and getting a completely different, more serious injury because of it.

Taking longer is better for his long range career and for Chelsea … but 8 weeks, especially with plasma treatments, etc is generally enough time for a partial tear and strain to heal … and it’s the World Cup.

Yep. Huge risk attached to this.

This never ends well...

Any examples of the contrary?

Ronaldo has a bad knee since 2014 I think. Needed rest/surgery (?) but it would take months and he wanted the World Cup iirc. And as someone else mentioned, a lot of players play through the pain/injury and force themselves and it ends up okay(ish) in the long run (till the end their career at least). Kroos played on pain killers for 6 months.

Though I agree it isn’t recommended and there is always the fear of having another Torres/Kaka/Pato/insertname. No guarantees either way and hope for Reece James he doesn’t end up in the same situation.

You know I got taking Rooney, Owen, Beckham and Robson in these situations for the most part..... but James (and likely Walker) when all we've been doing the past 18-24 months is celebrate how deep how deep this right back depth is would be utterly wild.

Tripper RCB, Trent RWB with Ben White. Seems, too easy? You have 2 genuinely in form players there... and well, Trent, in a more protected role with 3 at the back, but still can't him to flourish though.

The inevitable back 5 are currently not in their teams first XI and/or will be returning from injury. Which means he's gonna drop Jude for Kalvin for that extra protection on top.

You dont always need surgery for an LCL injury anyway, unless its so severe its damaged other parts of the knee. You can self heal LCL at home... In this instance, Im willing to bet the X-rays showed no further damage and the specialist has advised no surgery needed, and a rehab programme only.

I very much doubt James has refused surgery, as it's more common not to need surgery with LCL injuries.

With a 26 man squad as opposed to the previous 23 man squad, you can carry that extra player or 2 that are returning from injury or struggling a wee bit for fitness, but totally agree, in terms of having too many playing in the team that are off form or returning from injury, that is not good at all.

Trippier is a far better option for England than James. Although James the better player, Southgate is going to rely on set pieces to get goals due to his negative approach and Trippier arguably the best in the squad for delivery.

Obviously a huge shame for him but probably in his long term interest not to rush back.

Rushing back from an injury is a stupid idea in general, but it is especially stupid and reckless when the player has a history of picking up annoying injuries. I feel bad for him that he misses the WC but this is a good thing. He should hopefully be fit and raring to go when the season restarts in late Dec.

He says he understood the risks but was willing to accept those risks for the chance to play in the WC.

I think a lot of fans don't realise how much international football means to most players.

If you're incredibly lucky you get 3 goes at a world cup, not even winning it but just getting to go.

Broke down again today. I was surprised he even started. His reaction seemed to indicate he could be out for a while again. Such a shame.

He's easily Chelsea's best player, they need him to stay fit to have a chance of getting top 4.

But like, how? Is it a complete freak coincidence or has he come back to soon?

Fair enough if it's the former, if it's the later then Chelsea have absolutely fecked up.

Disaster for him, poor guy.

Really bad for Chelsea too because he's such a game changing player and the margins are going to be so tight this year.

What the feck? Is there a chance that pushing himself for the WC then easing off did this sort of damage?

Possibly I guess. I don’t know how that kind of muscle training works. The injury itself in this game looked pretty innocuous. Such a shame though, for him and for Chelsea. Hope it isn’t anything serious again.

Feel bad for him. One of the few chelsea players I would take in a heartbeat and a likeable player too. Always had a soft spot for him since his sister Lauren James was part of our women’s team. I hope this injury doesn’t hamper his career.

Think it's obviously just genetics really. With the amount of people and investment around these guys now - from Chelsea and his own investment in himself, I highly doubt they will recover by pushing too hard.

But does seem a bit mad that it's their two wingbacks continually getting injured. So maybe not.
