Redcafe's Top Ten Manchester United players of all time

From the players I've watched:

1. Cantona
2. Ronaldo
3. Giggs
4. Scholes
5. Keane
6. Schmeichel
7. Beckham
8. Rooney
9. Ruud
10. Ferdinand

Sir Bobby Charlton
Bryan Robson
Cristiano Ronaldo
David Beckham
Dennis Law
Duncan Edwards
Eric Cantona
George Best
Paul Scholes
Ryan Giggs

I was born in 93. Could we maybe have a separate thread for current era? I doubt many here ever saw Best, Law and Charlton let alone Duncan Edwards.
I was born in '88 but I've seen quite a bit of the old legends. Both on my local sports channel and MUTV there have been a lot of old footage and games. Also Youtube.

Admittedly I haven't seen Duncan Edwards play but he's got a phenomenal reputation from his peers and people who got to watch him and his statistics back him up as being something special so for him I make an exception. Otherwise I think you should only include players that you have personally watched and you can see that it's the case for most posters.

De Gea :/ and you left giggs out. The mind boggles.
I feel awful about it myself. But, imo, Giggs was never as influential as the players that I mentioned - even if he beats them all on longevity

It's impossible to pick the list of 10 players in Man United history and didn't leave anyone behind.

1. Peter Schmeichel
2. Ronaldo
3. Giggs
4. Scholes
5. Keane
6. RVN
7. Cantona
8. Gary Neville
9. Irwin
10. Vidic

I literally picked the first 10 players that came into my head... it's the only way to do this without feeling bad for leaving other great players out...

I agree re Giggs and I would extend that to Scholes. It is amazing how many have selected one of them as the best United player of all time. I cannot think of a single time either of them was the best player in the United team.

Giggs is overrated on here. And Keane criminally underrated. It's as if folk have forgotten the 90s.

Yeah that is fair. Everyone is going to be different as well. Such a hard thing to do. Good fun trying though!

Isn't it JOHNNY Carey? That's an unfortunate point at which to get his name wrong.

Guys if Best is in your list he should be top of your list.

His name was Johnny but he was also known as Jackie.

I could be here all day trying to pick players in some sort of ability order but that just won't work so I'll go with a top 10 of my favourites that I've seen play

1. Solskjaer
2. Scholes
3. Ronaldo
4. Cantona
5. Giggs

RvN
Rio
Evra

Giggs is overrated on here. And Keane criminally underrated. It's as if folk have forgotten the 90s.

I don't remember Roy Keane ever being that good although he was always in the team. I guess I was at an age where I didn't understand what he brought to the team for the majority of his career.

(I'm 27 but have been attending 20+ home games per season since 1993/4.)

In the order of contribution for United (how good they were multiplied by the number of years they played for us and also counting the trophies we won on those years):

1) Sir Bobby Charlton
2) Ryan Giggs
3) George Best
4) Dennis Law
5) Paul Scholes
6) Wayne Rooney
7) Roy Keane
8) Cristiano Ronaldo
9) Eric Cantona
10) Bryan Robson

His service has been immense though, he remained consistently good for an incredible amount of time. I don't entirely disagree though, I remember a popular discussion amongst United fans back when Giggs was in his prime was that he didn't score enough goals. For a player as fast and as skilful as he was, he should have scored far more.

Yes, I remember there was a brilliant thread here that counted all of his assists for us - and it looks like he is, by a considerable margin, the best assist maker in EPL history - and quite possible in Man United history, too bad that there are no assist stats from before 2000 (or even later). As I said, it was incredibly hard for me to leave him out, but I can't replace any of the players that I picked for that top 10.

edit: Giggs and Robson, these are the two that are haunting me since posting that list. Absolute legends

Schweini? For pre-United achievements?

Giggs is overrated on here. And Keane criminally underrated. It's as if folk have forgotten the 90s.

Yeah, I'd agree with that.

Giggs was brilliant in his pomp, and obviously had an incredible overall career, so it's no surprise that people rate him highly in this context. But Keane was a better player. He was better than Scholes too, for that matter.

1. Ryan Giggs

3. Eric Cantona
4. Peter Schmeichel
5. Cristiano Ronaldo
6. Roy Keane
7. Rio Ferdinand

Keane has pissed off a lot of fans since leaving with constant bitter comments though - this poll is not just about who was the best player. Still I had Keane higher than Giggs in my list.

3. Ronaldo
4. Giggs
5. Scholes
6. Schmeichel
7. De Gea
8. Sharpe
9. Kanchelskis
10. Irwin

Can just as easily add RvN, Cole, Hughes, Beckham, Bruce, Stam, Johnson, Solskjaer etc. It'll change on a daily basis. At the end of the day, it's all about your favourites and that clouds people's judgement. I'd have a hard time picking Rooney for example
