RedCafe's Top 50 Albums

And another thing I have noticed with youth in general (I know because I was the same when I was younger) is that they totally disregard music from past generations without realising that the music that they are raving about today are directly influenced by these same bands and wouldn't exist without them.

just a thought.

There's some fantastic stuff that has come out in the last few years, it's just finding it, and saying that, this is one of my personal bug bears in the way that I know that there are albums I am missing out on and haven't heard that I would probably love, if only I had access to them and the knowledge that they existed, maybe I should pay more attention to the music press. It's just that I find a lot of the publications unnecessarily pretentious and am too lazy to go trawling through the internet to find them.

Now and again I read the music press, but not as often as I used to...probably things like Mojo and Uncut who do tend to focus on the past as well as the present...get some interesting free cd's as well with them which can open my mind up a bit. There was one a few months back which had a great track by a group called The Draytones...never heard of them before...really want to hear it now, but can I find it? Can I feck!

I`ve discovered loads of interesting music both new and old through being a member of Last fm. Far more relevent than any magazine these days.

To take this a bit further personally, by listening to certain artists it has opened up all sorts of directions. With Dylan I listened to Woody Guthrie, Costello opened up some excellent Country stuff, Aretha Franklin got me into all sorts of original soul and r 'n b, and Bowie...well, the list is fecking endless.

Are there new bands now that you can do this with?

Yeah same here, occasionally get them, basically if there's something of interest in them for me. Got Mojo yesterday as it has a feck off huge Radiohead interview in it, not read it yet though. usually I'd buy Q if any, I find it the least pretentious of the ones I've read. Don't get NME anymore, bunch of twats writing for that these days.

Agreed. I don't want to get into a "I'm well trendy, me" but I went through a phase of liking stuff like Oasis (still do, just not as much). These days, I listen to a lot of Motown stuff and the Beatles and the like. Some great music from the 60s onwards but some people seem to decide that if it's past a certain point in time it's not worth listening to. It's like a friend I have who's my age (19) and he is adamant that he won't watch any films before 1990, because before then they are all too outdated. Not much you can do for people like that!

Oh and you have a PM

It's a bit more difficult these days as bands have such varied influences that it's hard to find direct avenues to follow. Too many genres and sub genres now, everything has to have a name, confuses the feck out of me to be honest.

You're right there isn't too much to say to that, his loss in the end.

Cheers for the PM will let you know what I think shortly.

Btw do you want to submit your own list for inclusion? You're welcome to do so if you would like.

You, young man, have great taste!:D

I grew up with an older brother who was an original mod in the 1960s so had access to some awesome Motown/Stax/Atlantic stuff, as well as the pop stuff like Small Faces, Kinks, Who, Beatles, Stones etc...I was the only nine year old in my junior school who had a proper fishtail parka...cool or what?

Don't want to sound patronising, but I'm so glad I grew up in the 1970s...

Nah thanks. If I tried to do a top 50 I'd barely be able to fill it - I don't think I've heard 50 albums I like yet. In no order it would include:

What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
Abbey Road - The Beatles
Power Corruption and Lies - New Order
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Ocean Rain - Echo & The Bunnymen
The Stone Roses
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles
Real Life - Magazine
Low - Bowie
Led Zeppellin II
Turn On The Bright Lights - Interpol
Technique - New Order
Closer - Joy Division
Crocodiles - Echo and the Bunnymen
Queen is Dead - Smiths
Electronic - Electronic

See I'm quite young so I haven't heard loads of albums, I'm still getting my head round all the stuff that's out there, and also I don't listen a lot to the albums of lots of my favourite artists (in fact, my favourites, Joy Division, I prefer the singles and miscellaneous tracks to the albums, even if they are brilliant).

I guess I did give a bit of a list there, but that's not a top 50 (don't bother including it in your poll) it's just what I saw just now looking through my small collection and decided I like enough to mention. Ask me again in a few years, is I suppose what I'm trying to say!

Lucky bastard! I eat up documentaries about the Beatles, The Who, Motown etc. Not that I'm unhappy with the time we're in now, but music and football seemed much more fulfilling back then.

Does Live at Leeds count as an album for this kind of poll?

Mate, the highest compliment I can make to you is that the way you have discussed music in this thread and the type of music that you like, I would never have guessed that you were 19.

Thanks for those two tracks, both excellent especially In A Lonely Place which I thought was brilliant. I will be digging out the missus' early New Order now. Cheers.

Thanks very much.

Their first album, Movement, is a little too dark, sub-Joy Division. Dreams Never End, Chosen Time, Denial, and Doubts Even Here are my suggestions from that album.

However, I would go straight for the Substance compilation. Some great singles and b-sides, especially from the 82-85 period when they were still very moody.

I'll pick out the albums rather than individual tracks. I am very much a put on an album to completion kind of guy. Sometimes songs in isolation can sound shit but put them in context of and album and they can then make sense.

That better not be directed at me you fecker ;)

True.

Also, if you haven't already, you must check out Substance by Joy Division (not the same album as New Order's), it's got singles and b-sides that aren't on their albums, and some of the best songs you could hear!

I don't know, how old are you?

I'm 32 mate. Thought you may be referring to the absence of Led Zep/Floyd/Stones/Beatles/Hendrix etc in my thread...

If nothing else, this thread has given my ideas for tons of stuff to download

Nearco, nice list :D

The missus is holding up the vinyl as we speak :D, there must be about 20-30 12"'s and albums in her hand, I better start working my way through them all. Looks like she has their whole catalogue here.

No it wasn't directed at you mate, but if the cap fits and all that..........:D

I don't see any Sinatra or Elvis on your list you heathen

Not that mad on Elvis really, I like a bit of Sinatra and the Brat Pack but not enough to make my list. Original Oceans 11 was class too.

Fair play! Part-time missus part-time DJ, not bad! ;)

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons here, but without Elvis we probably wouldn't be having this great debate about music. I put the debut album high in my list, not just because its got some great songs, but for its influence on pretty much everything else that followed.

Everything pretty much starts from that album...

Can't argue with that at all, but my criteria was based on me owning, listening and loving said albums.

Damn you RedNome...have now started thinking about another 50 albums...the missus has already complained about me singing to The Ramones first album while she tries to get some sleep!:D

Your Welcome.

Worryingly, not much from the last 2-3 years in these lists. Arctics are the only act in the last few years with any potential longevity IMO

Kings of Leon maybe on a lesser scale? Last album was excellent.

Yeah Kings of Leon maybe, last album was very good indeed. Think the scene is ready for a new superstar band though
