Music RedCafe's Favourite Albums Of All Time Contest (Round 5)

Blink 182 - Blink 182
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (just for you DS)
Sum 41 - All Killer No Filler
Deadmau5 - For a Lack of a Better Name
I completely forgot this & Random Album Title came out in this decade, great shout

Never liked Linkin Park much. A couple of great songs but that era was the start of the end of mainstream rock / metal for me. Felt like a big downgrade on what came before. But I know they were a big deal and would be played all the time.

Even just in terms of mainstream metal / hard-rock albums from that decade, I'd have thought albums from the likes of QOTSA, System of a Down and Slipknot would place ahead of Hybrid Theory. Surprised at how much people like that album.

This decade was full of bangers.

That's a very eclectic list. Interesting to see Holy feck on there rubbing shoulders with Bad Religion. I saw them play in Hollywood. Live they were a total dance band, which somehow surprised me, because on record they seem more head trip electronica. Live, it was a dance party.

What genres are the Dutch records you listed?

They were fairly big in the Netherlands (for that kinds of band) for a little bit actually; Wenn es passiert was even one of the theme songs for that year's Tour de France tv coverage. As it happens, they are also one of the bands I've seen the most: probably four times. But I went to their own concert just once, the rest was at festivals.

Anyway, great band, but somehow their catalogue is hard to get now. I just can't seem to find their fourth (final) album for a reasonable price.

Yeah, I tend to like all kinds of stuff. I'm more 90s for US hiphop, but that's probably also out of ignorance. And I started a little later with most metal I listen to, so that's missing also.

For those other albums - it's a bit hard to be precise about genres, but I'll try:
Acda en De Munnik - Groeten uit maaiveld > poprock (they did theater shows before becoming more focused on their albums)
Les Cowboys Fringants - L'expédition > folk-poprock (Quebec type, that's a lot quicker than Fleet Foxes)
Damien Robitaille - L'homme autonome > funky poprock (very cheeky lyrics, good arrangements)
Malajube - Labyrinthes > proggy rock (a lot of movement in the music, but very melodic, recognizable songs)
Opgezwolle - Eigen wereld > hiphop (Dutch hiphop from the 2000s has been amazing in terms of sounds and samples, and great lyrics as well)
Pater Moeskroen - Niets is wat het lijkt > folky poprock (their background is party music; their folk is often Celtic, but here it's a lot wider)
Wir Sind Helden - Von hier an blind > poprock (a fair bit of synths in there, just really nice songs)

Was about to say that. Pleasant surprise.
If we all agree, we can put them in our top 5! It just didn't seem worth a spot if few even know the band.

Totally accept I am very much in the minority but reading all these selections means I really have no idea about this decade.

L.B.D.A. - Wonders of the World
Slightly Stoopid - Closer to the Sun
SOAD - Toxicity
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Korn - Untouchables

  1. At Mount Zoomer - Wolf Parade
  2. The Funeral - Arcade Fire
  3. Monkey Barz - Sean Price
  4. Diplomatic Immunity - The Diplomats
  5. The Realness - Cormega

These lists are telling me i should really give Sigur Ros a try at some point. Post rock/post punk type stuff if what I've heard is true.

Green Day: American Idiot
New Order: Get Ready
Amy Whitehouse: Back to Black
U2: All That You Can't Leave Behind - best U2 album post Rattle and Hum but what a low bar that is.
Powderfinger: Odyssey Number Five - three great songs but not really a great album - then again Nevermind won the 90's round and that only has 3 great tracks and lots of meh filler.

Close but no cigar

Coldplay: Parachutes - a great album at the time but their rapid decline over the next couple of albums, to the rubbish they now put out, has spoilt this for me. Annoyingly.

What a huge decline from the 1980's and 1990's. So many albums have 1 or 2 good tunes but so few were great whole albums. I don't even listen to the ones I've listed much at all.

This is why I couldn’t pick a single album from this decade.

Yeah such a terrible decade for music, especially 99% of rap albums were absolute shite.

Indie pop shoe gaze wave was strong thou.

M.I.A - Kala (amazed nobody has mentioned this)
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Daft Punk - Discovery
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.

Im afraid I take these lists too seriously for that. My list-making-integrity would take too big a hit.

1. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
2. 50 Cent - Get Rich Or Die Trying
3. Lil Wayne - The Carter III
4. The Game - The Documentary
5. Snoop Dogg - Tha Last Meal

Seems hard leaving out albums like ”Supreme Clientele”, ”The College Dropout”, ”Lord Willin”, ”The Minstrel Show”, ”Below The Heavens” ”The Blueprint” and many many more. This is my favorite era in hip hop i think.
”The New Testament” by Suga Free should be in my top 5 actually, but cant fit it.

1. Radiohead - in Rainbows
2. The White Stripes - Elephant
3. Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
5. System of a Down - Toxicity
