Redcafe Drafting League Game Thread

attacking, possession-based, aggressive with intense pressing from my midfield and attack harassing the opposition for 90+ minutes.

A Rock-solid defensive base lead by Tresor and Chumpitaz and flanked with Krol and Azpilicueta on each side. All defenders are not only tough to break, but also have great ability both in the air and with the ball in their feet being comfortable in possession.

The intention is to control the game through world-class midfield base and to cut supply lines to the opponent's attack. There are not many better midfield bases in the draft with that much ability on the ball married with fantastic work-rate.

In front of them are 3 players that suit the aggressive nature of the team to the teeth. Hard-working, great 1 on 1, with the ability to create problems on their own or with the supply from my midfield. Elkjaer will be in his element dragging opposition defence all over the place being a huge threat on his own or opening the space for upcoming wingers and midfielders.

Stobzilla

A slight deviation from what is normally expected. The biggest difference being that we now operate with a back 4. Ramos is still afforded the opportunity to move forward, but not in a way that negates his defensive responsibility. More like an Ivanovic at Chelsea, Wes Brown at United in the latter part of the 00's which provided a balance to the more attacking left back.

Popescu who can be described as a Proto-Busquets, for this system at least, is a worthy replacement.

Seedorf provides his usual midfield running and joining the attack, Giles is more reserved and holding position which can then account for Alaba charging on. John Terry spent a career covering for Ashley Cole, defending his own space as well as any left is in his make up.

Djalminha replaces Sivori and will be encouraged to pull out to the right hand side and find pockets of space that might not be immediately occupied by the cutting in Claudio Lopez or more reserved Ramos. Kubala will be encouraged to cut in off of his wing and provide the finishing touches, linking with the Brazilian playmaker all the time.

5' Missing Sivori and Bican, Stobz sets up with a 442 diamond giving him solid control of the midfield to open the match. Djalminha creates a 1-2 with Kubala that catches Cerezo by surprise leading to a beautiful curved shot that Grosics saves

7' Seedorf creates an opening for Lopez whose shot is barely saved by Grosics. Tresor wins the corner.

15' Modric and Schweiny starts playing their way into the match and open up Ribery who misses a shot over the bar.

22' Alaba beats Azpil and crosses into Claudio Lopez but Krol elegantly intercepts

30' Conti creates space for Modric and slips him a great pass but Campos, at the edge of his box, pounces on it in time.

43' Giles and Djalminha play with each other to create space but Tresor sniffs the trouble and stifles the attacking combination.

First Half 0-0

60' The interplay of Cerezo, Modric and Bastian frustrates Djalminha. The Brazilian lunges in for a late tackle that crumbles Modric to the grass. The Ref shows a yellow. Beam's drunken fans raise a cacophony in the stands. The ushers need to remove several fans for throwing their ale on the pitch.

65' Seeing Djalminha get frustrated, Schweinstaeger starts working on him like a savvy professional. Tugs on Djalminha's shirt, a cheeky testicle yank. John Terry notices and starts shouting. The next time he has the ball Djalminha throws himself on the ground in a move that would make Neymar jealous. The Ref shows another yellow and a red. Djalminha is sent off due to the guile of Bastian.

70' Taking advantage of Campos' daring sweeper keeper play, Elkjaer slips into a nook and takes a pass from Ribery to score 1-0

85' Pressed back and defending with 10 men Stobz side looks sad and tired. Baresi already has 6 intercpetions and has saved the scoreline numerous times in the alst 15 minutes.

87' Ribery heats up. He puts on a dashing dribbling performance and loses Ramos. Its like watching a dog chasing a squirrel, the squirrel is never in danger. Ribery cross low and Conti scores.

2-0 Jim Beam Wins
70' Elkjaer (Ribery)
87' Conti (Ribery)

harms vs. sjor

This is a pretty simple counter-attacking set up that maximises the efficiency of my outstanding defensive unit and also provides more space for Hamrin, Seeler and Heynckes up front. Denying the space for the likes of Blokhin/Kalle is also the best way to limit them — Blokhin especially was the most dangerous when he had an opportunity to reach his full speed.

Tigana's and Lerby's constant running and ability to cover both inside and outside channels will be very useful. With Cafu injured, Demyanenko starts at right back. He had a Brehme-esque ability to effortlessly switch flanks without it affecting his performance — for example he was usually deployed on the right in the 1988 Euros when Soviet Union reached the final.

Sjor has a fantastic team, but his defence doesn't seem impenetrable to me, and I have the right men to exploit that. Seeler is one of the best and the most complete strikers of all-time. Heynckes at his peak scored 40+ goals in 3 consecutive seasons, twice becoming Bundesliga's top scorer competing directly against Gerd Müller. Hamrin is one of the deadliest forwards that Serie A had ever seen.

Fun fact:
In 6 games that Larsson and Campbell had played against each other, Larsson only scored 1 goal. That’s 1 goal less than Sol Campbell himself, who have somehow managed to score twice in the same fixtures.

Sjor
a.png

Tactics: Dejo's Carre Magique
Ferrer playing as defensive fullback, should be enough width on the side with Blokhin and Iniesta loves drifting there. Scholes controlling the game while Essien provides the muscle. Dejo and Iniesta should have a lovely partnership in theory, Iniesta is naturally quite selfless and Dejo had a great partnership with Prosinecki who was a similar player to Iniesta at Zvezda. Up front two runners that exploit space like no other.

a-Away-team-formation-tactics.png

Advantage for harms

  1. Very sound defensively - a back four that, more often than not, able to sniff out danger before it becomes a threat. This can only be done with great sense of positioning, tactical and space awareness, and very good physical attributes
  2. Robustness of 2 holding midfielders Tigana and Lerby to help out defensively, and initiating counter with good passing accuracy to the forwards upfront
  3. Rivellino working his magic and not shy away from any physical encounter. Might be a shoe too big to fill by Essien (in place of injured Goncalves)
  4. Seeler who can score out of virtually everywhere
  5. Very good attacking threat from two wide forwards
Advantage for Sjor
  1. If any team that can unlock harms' defense, it it Sjor's. Can imagine an Total-Football-sque front four: comfortable in any attacking position left, right and center; can out-dribble anyone on their day, very fluid, can create space on their own and score
  2. Scholes with insane passing range and accuracy - you just couldn't leave him alone. Expect a busy day for Tigana
  3. Alves marauding run, creating overload on the right
Predicted outcome:

  • Seeler (assist from Hamrin)

Get in  I love reading these write-ups, it always feels as suspenseful as a proper match. Turns out its even more fun if you're actually winning. Mazzola is the absolute MVP of my squad so far

It was a game that I was afraid of, especially after losing Cafu, Robson and Totti. Nice to see Uwe carrying us on to the win

I've ought to start fining those useless bastards — Carrizo, Moore, Cafu, Schnellinger, Campbell, Perfumo, Demyanenko... and not a single clean sheet so far

MY-TEAM-formation-tactics.png

The team is built on strong defence (and superb Goalkeeper), and screened out by two of the best goalscoring defensive midfielders of all time in M. Sammer and F. Hierro.

In attack, supplying Der Bomber are all time great G. Hagi and G. Meazza, with Simonsen (1977 Ballon d'Or winner) coming from right wing to deliver the sucker punch.

The versatility of Hagi, Meazza, Simonsen, Sammer, and Hierro provide the team with unpredictability and greater goal threat options.

Cubemine
League-draft-game-4-formation-tactics.png

Going back to a 4-3-3 with 2 Cm's (Gerrard and Kante) and an attcking midfielder in Zidane. If Gerrard goes too far up the field then Kante should be able to cover for him, but with Neymar, Mathews and Zidane supplying De Castro that shouldn't be overly necessary. Alba won't be attacking much this game but he is a very good left back.

3' Early chance for cubemine. Kante picks up the loose ball and passes it to Zidane. He turns a defender with his trademark roulette move and sends the ball towards the goal. Maier parries it away into safety.

8' The two teams are exchanging possession with nobody seems to dominate the proceedings.

12' Marcelo goes in his trademark overlapping runs and slips it to Hagi. Hagi switches the wing and finds Simonsen on the wing. Simonsen beats his marker and sends a low drilled cross in the box. Muller connects and it's 1-0.

17' Good chance at the other end. Matthews beats Marcelo and cuts in. He looks for the top left corner but misses narrowly.

21' More cause for trouble for Isotope. Matthews again turns Marcelo and puts a beauty of a cross in the box. It's Castro with the chance but again he couldn't find the target.

24' Isotope's team manages to relieve the pressure after the goal and evens up the midfield battle.

32' Sammer with a good chance outside the box. He shoots hard and low and the goalkeeper shows safe hands.

39' Corner for cubemine. van Dijk loses his marker and rattles the woodwork. Close as you can get.

HT: Even game so far with Isotope's team more opportunistic.

48' Meazza dribbles past two opposition players and creates some space. Hagi is expecting the pass and receives. He goes to the left but sees Hierro unmarked near the box. Hierro gets at the end of it an puts it past the keeper. Beautiful move. 2-0.

54' Cubemine's team looks to get back in the game. It's Zidane again that is the best player in his side finding Neymar on the wing. Neymar beats his marker and goes for goal. Maier is again at his place and saves it.

63' Some good chances for both sides. Muller's header off Hagi's cross goes agonizingly wide, whilst Zidane also comes close with a long range shot from 30 yards.

70' Big call in cubemine's favor. Castro goes down after being pushed by Ruggeri near the box. Gerrard picks up the loose ball and enters the box. Bergomi flies into a tackle and it's a penalty. Gerrard steps up. Saved! Gerrard throws his arms in the air but to no avail.

81' Another exchange in blows. Gerrard goes forward and finds Matthews. He again weaves his magic on the wing and sends a cross in the box. Castro gets on the end of it but just can't connect properly and ball goes out. On the other end Muller holds up well and finds Simonsen who goes from distance, but wide off the target.

FT 2-0 Isotope. Cubemine's team was unlucky with its finishing but Zidane and Matthews put a proper performance. For Isotope it was Muller again grabbing the headlines but probably Maier should be the MoTM keeping his clean sheet.

Uwe
Debut for Kahn and he lets 3 in, wont be in the team anytime soon.

Is that our guys on the ground?

But you're right, let's stay positive. Next game is our game!

At least now we know who is good enough for our team and who isnt....Kahn can feck off.

BKTWR vs. Chester

BKTWR

http://sharemytactics.com/131368
  • 433/false 9 - Rui Costa.
  • Similarities to Barca but NOT trying to copy fully
  • Control midfield/possession - all MFers (and Costa) comfortable on the ball
  • Costa complete freedom to drop/drift as he sees fit. Good dribbler, creates own chances, brings in teammates and cool finisher
  • If oppo CHs come with Costa, Rivaldo/Kanchelskis to cut in and take advantage of space created
  • Koeman can push up with possession - long passes IF space created or can keep going with other MFers sitting
  • No overlapping FBs (a la Alves), mainly there to defend. Neal may push if sees space and Koeman to drop.
  • In possession, back four mainly stay giving coverage across width of pitch
  • Out of possession, Koeman sits/patrols/covers any opposing attacking mid/No.10

Chester

LWF: Boniek (roams freely)
RWF: Lato (drifts inside the box)
CF: Albert (false nine - more or less)

CM: Edwards (b2b)
CM: Tardelli (b2b)
DM: Zito (holder)

LB: Cabrini (balanced)
CB: Israel (allrounder - tough as feck but with a decent foot)
CB: Wright (stopper)
RB: Bezsonov (balanced)

BKTWR-Away-team-formation-tactics.png

Advantage for BKTWR

  1. Expect Rui Costa to flourish as false-nine here, pulling the strings and creating space for Rivaldo and Kanchelskis
  2. Rivaldo looks to be given fair amount of responsibility to score goals, but this is probably his great chance to showcase his attacking prowess
  3. Kanchelskis' pace and directness, while feeding the ball off the likes of Kroos and Rui Costa could spell trouble for Chester's defense
Advantage for Chesterlestreet
  1. Hard to see BKTWR's defense able to contain attacking quality of Chester's team, even more or so when Bezsonov/Cabrini joins in, and Albert likely to win his duel with Koeman
  2. Midfield trio Zito-Tardelli-Edwards provides more solid platform to support attacking teammates
Predicted outcome:

BKTWR (2) vs. Chesterlestreet (3)

Goals scored
  • Rivaldo (assist from Rui Costa)
  • Rui Costa (assist from Rivaldo)
  • Lato (assist from Albert)
  • Boniek (assist from Lato)

Skizzo vs. MJJ

Skizzo

Basically a 442 with Silva drifting into space centrally to support the front two, and Cole linking up with him a la Pires. Front two form their successful partnership. De Rossi more holding as Effenberg plays a B2B role and L. Enrique helps shore up Maicon’s side as the Brazilian attacks.

MJJ

Mentality / Control - Control the match, but be wary of counter attacks.

Team Shape / Very Fluid - With this approach, all players are expected to contribute to all phases of play within a very fluid system.
The team will be encouraged to play free-flowing football with players allowed high levels of creative freedom.

Tempo / Normal - Your players will adapt a balanced tempo throughout the match, increasing it when necessary and slowing things down in appropriate situations.

Width - Wide instructs the team to stretch the play even wider and use the full extremes of the pitch to their advantage.

Defense

Defensive Line / Normal - Players will adopt a balanced approach to their defensive line according to the match situation. They will push higher when needed and will be willing to drop deeper should it be required.

Closing Down / More - More instructs players to actively engage the opponent in possession in a bid to reduce the time they have on the ball and ultimately to win it back from them as quickly as possible.

Prevent Short GK Distribution instructs forwards to press the opposition defense to try to prevent the goalkeeper building from the back. This should force the goalkeeper to play long or take big risks to distribute short.

Use Tighter Marking will ask players to adopt a marking scheme in defensive situations where players are encouraged to stick particularly close to their assigned opponent in order to prevent them attacking the ball.

Build-Up

Play Out Of Defense encourages defenders to pass their way out of the back rather than clear the ball long.

Pass Into Space instructs players to look to make passes into open spaces.

Passing Directness / Mixed - Players will pick and choose when to utilise a more direct approach depending on the overall team instructions in an attempt to balance their game within the structure of the team.

Retain Possession instructs players to priorities hold of the ball.

Be More Expressive will allow more creative players the freedom to play the game with additional vision and flair outside of the confines of a team's tactical setup.

Attack

Final Third / Look For Overlap - instructs players to hold onto the ball and look for an overlapping player in support, most likely a marauding full-back.

Work Ball Into Box instructs players to work hard for their opening, remaining patient and not forcing the issue but rather retaining the ball until the breakthrough occurs.

Whipped Crosses will instruct players to deliver balls into the box with pace, swerve and dip in order to make it as hard as possible for defenders to deal with them.

Game analysis:

1. Really balanced game with neither team having any major advantages over the other.
2. Ferrara/McGrath match well to Henry and Eusebio attributes wise.
3. Both midfields look really combative with both graft and workrate.
4. The defenses are again well built to handle the oppositions
5. Neither of the goalkeepers standout against the other

I would expect this to be a goal scoring draw.
I'll go with a 3-3 scoreline

Goals:

1. Eusebio long ranger after he receives the ball from Didi and goes on a run before letting one rip. 1-0
2. Effenberg matches with his own long ranger after a late run from midfield with Silva assisting him 1-1
3. Jorginho runs down the left flank and puts a ball in for Henry to score 2-1
4. Kenny put Rush through for a cracking goal 2-2
5. Eusebio, Henry and Mazzola with some brilliant interplay that leads to a goal with Mazzola scoring off a Eusebio lay off. 3-2
6. Kenny puts in a corner which Ferrara heads in to make it 3-3

Isotope v Swarm

Isotope

Not much change, other than Zizinho for Hagi. I feel spoiled.

Solid defense, with two aggressive but comfortable playing from the back centerbacks. Advantage of having excellent (long and short) passer CBs in Hierro and Sammer to occasionally ping passes to the front line flanks and negate opposition fullbacks to commit forward. Other advantage is to bypass opponent midfield and prevent opponent to commit midfielders when attacking, thus severely reduce their goal threat.

The defense is protected by two no-nonsense/aggressive defensive/box to box midfielders in Edgar Davids and D. Simeone. Midfields high pressing, centerbacks passing skill, and Zizinho workrate ensure constant supply for attackers.

Controlling the midfield and attack are three legend of the game: Zizinho, Kempes, and Simonsen. Each of them can assist and/or score, and with ability to run with the ball on wide or center areas from deep positions.

Aside of a prolific goalscorer, "Der Bomber" workrate and positioning help to bring his teammates into play. Sometimes he's dropping deep, and allow others (Kempes or Simonsen) to take the main attack position, thus it's extremely hard on man marking him. In short, he's no Inzaghi.

A side note that in attacks are three Ballon d'Or winners.

Swarm

Same 4-2-3-1 formation as always, now with mostly the players I had planned for it. The offensive left flank with Roberto Carlos overlapping Skoglund will be balanced out by the more reserved right side with both Jair da Costa and Burgnich tracking back and helping out when Carlos does his offensive runs. This balance is continued in central defense with Schwarzenbeck playing the stopper part while Picchi has the freedom to open up play. In central midfield the ever reliable and never injured Andrea Pirlo will play his DLP role distributing balls all over the pitch. He will be backed up by Mauro Silva who will provide him with the time he needs and take over some of Pirlo's defensive duties. In front of those two we have the even more reliable Sandro Mazzola who is back in his number 10 slot after a tour of every offensive position my system has to play. From here he can both set up plays for his partners in crime as well as being a goal scoring threat. As my central striker I have Sandor Kocsis who will cause all kinds of problems for the opposition. Both Skoglund and Jair as well as Roberto will be encouraged to whip crosses into the box in order to utilize Kocsis heading ability and I am sure some of those headers will find their way into the back of the net.

Advantages for Swarm:
  • Mazzola in his natural position with Jair, Burgnich and Picchi filling ideal roles
  • Kocsis against two center backs who not ideally suited to stopping him
  • A tactical set-up familiar and well suited to its players
Advantages for Isotope
  • Two playmaking center backs with different styles against old school attackers not used to pressing
  • Gerd Müller, Simonsen and Kempes in intriguing combination
Moments of Interest:

12' Mazzola and Jair with fantastic interplay to set up a diagonal cross that Kocsis captures in between Hierro and Sammer and scores a goal
25' Zizinho breaks down the midfield and lays it off for Müller to target a precise bullet past Planicka
30' Andrade strips the ball from Skoglund, Sammer runs up pitch carry the ball and feeding it to Simonsen who gives it back to Sammer who feeds it to Müller who captures his brace
40' Davids' high energy double teams Pirlo stripping him of the ball and sparking a counter-attack that moves through Zizinho, Kempes and Müller sets up a goal for Simonsen
47' Simeone crashes into Mazzola cause Sandro to limp off for the end of the half

2nd
51' Sandro Mazzola tracks back and strips a charging Sammer, he assists Kocsis for his brace
55' Roberto Carlos arcs a free kick almost into the upper corner but Maier performs a world class diving save
68' Charging up Roberto Carlos spots Kocsis and sends a ball into the box that Marcelo would be jealous of, Kocsis picks it up and finishes his hat trick
78' Sammer charges up pitch interplaying with Davids and Zizinho but Picchi strips him sends the ball to Carlos but Carlos gets smashed by Simeone covering.
89' Kempes beats Burgnich but sends a poor ball into Kocsis that Maier easily saves

Final 3-3
Goals: Muller(2), Kocsis (3), Simonsen (1)
Assists: Mazzola(1), Jair(1), Carlos(1), Müller(1), Zizinho(1), Sammer(1)

2mufc0 vs. cubemine

2mufc0

Attack with pace down the wings, Netzer play maker from midfield Kaka in final third combining with sheva, no special instructions for players all in natural positions.

cubemine

I am going to go with a 4-4-1-1, Gerrard is substituting at left mid as all of the people who can actually play there are injured, Gilberto Silva gets his first start alongside Kante in the more defensive role whereas Kante will act as a box to box midfielder, Zidane will act as a attacking mid in this setup.

League-draft-game-4-Away-team-formation-tactics.png

Advantage for 2mufc0
  1. A frustrating position for Gerrard to play as left midfielder (due to injury situation). Against a lesser opposition, he could do a job (as he played couple of times for England), but he is facing Bonhof-Johnstone here
  2. World-class centre-back pair of Scirea-Vierchowod
  3. Shevchenko is his prime is a devastating striker, with excellent mobility and finishing
Advantage for cubemine
  1. Having Netzer and Kaka together seems to be overkill. Giberto Silva-Kante provides a more solid and balanced platform, especially for Zidane to work his magic. Would imagine cubemine winning the midfield battle here
  2. One of the best (if not the best) right-hand side combo in this draft: Djalma Santos-Stanley Matthews

Predicted outcome:

2mufc0 (2) vs. cubemine (1)

Goals scored
  1. Shevchenko (assist from Johnstone)
  2. Johnstone
  3. Matthews (assist from Zidane)
MOTM: Johnstone

Kocsis needs a drug test.
This is the 50's, no one gives a crap about your so-called "drugs"

Also that looked like a straight red for Simeone to me, nasty tackle on Mazzola.

Indnyc vs. harms

Indnyc

Tactics
  • Pablo Aimar comes into the side to create a very attacking unit.
  • Rahn joins Hazard and Ruud to form a potent attack

harms

Ricardo Zamora, 5th greatest keeper of the XX century according to IFFHS (you can argue with this assessment, but the guy was obviously a great goalkeeper), takes Carrizo's place in goal. The rest of my defence remains unchanged from the last game, I think that it's beautifully balanced with Schnellinger as a more reserved fullback behind Rivellino and Demyanenko as a modern fullback that will provide an overlapping option for Hamrin.

The rest had been covered before. Beautiful midfield partnership of Tigana & Robson that will outrun just about anyone and will outplay them with equal ease — Tigana as a more creative option, Robson adds up to my already significant goalthreat. Between Totti and Hamrin I have 440 goals in Serie A alone. Rivellino plays as a creative wing player on the left that he excelled in — not really a winger, but also not a true number 10 either. Klinsmann is a direct Seeler replacement — hardworking, mobile, prolific... and also capable of scoring incredible acrobatic goals.

2' Early pressure from team harms. Tigana and Robson seems in control of the midfield and the latter slips it to Totti who tries to find the far post from just outside the box. Misses narrowly.

4' Goal for Indnyc. Hanegem and Lizarazu combine on the left. Hazard makes a run forward and drags two defenders. Hanegem looks up and pulls a fantastic through ball to Ruud who slots it home. 1:0.

8' Another chance for Indnyc to make it 2:0. Gattuso takes the loose ball and combines with Aimar who finds Rahn on the wing. Rahn beats his marker but sees his effort saved by Zamora.

16' Team harms seems again in control in the last few minutes. Effort from Klinsmann is saved whilst Rivellino couldn't just get to the low cross from Hamrin on the right.

23' Cross in team harms box. Ruud heads it home but the keeper parries it away.

31' Possession is exchanged in the last few minutes with not much action in front of the goal

36' Hamrin showing some fantastic skills near the corner flag. He finds some space and knocks it to Rivellino in the middle. One touch and it's in the back of the net. 1:1. Excellent team goal.

45' All square at HT and entertaining game none the least.

53' Hazard is not marked on the wing and takes the ball in his stride. He finds Aimar near the opposition box who dribbles past Campbell and looks through on goal. Moore lashes a last minute challenge and brings him down. Penalty and yellow for Moore who can count himself lucky. Aimar will take this one and sends the keeper the other way - 2:1.

62' Great chance for team harms. Demyanenko crosses from the right and Klinsmann meets it with diving header. The ball bounces off the post and Walker clears it away.

71' Another one to get back to equal terms. Robson with his trademark deep run bursts through Indnyc midfield like it isn't there and bounces off Gattuso. He enters the box and fires low and hard. Banks pulls a worldie and parries it away. The ball bounces off the goal line, but the ref has none of it.

82' With team harms throwing everything forward they are a bit vulnerable at the back. A brilliant counter with Hanegem setting up Rahn finds him inside the opposition half with only the keeper to beat. He shoots past him to make it 3-1.

89' the two teams exchange some late punches but nothing to change the score.

FT' great game to watch for an outsider. Both teams looked set up well to win the game, but team Indnyc was the more opportunistic one in front of the goal.

Final score: 3-1 to Indnyc
