RedCafe Cricket Draft - ODIs

If you are going on average, he has an average of almost 40 with a strike rate of 92.4.
Even ganguly has an average of 41(striker rate of 73) and symonds is the better bowler. Symonds was much better fielder obviously. IMO Symonds in among top 30 players of all time and, at his best, he was a beast. I guess no one else rates him here, but still it really surprises me that people are taking likes of chanderpaul and yuvraj before him.
He has better average than yuvraj, better striker rate and was perhaps a better bowler as well. So please someone admit, that they made a mistake, so that I can sleep happily with the feeling of 1 up.
I was close to picking him. Was deciding between him and flower

Shouldnt be much of an issue when the spinners in question are Murali and Kumble. They were a handful for any batting side. Excellent wicket takers with great economy rates. Not much else can be asked for in an ODI.

They are a great pair, but I never saw Kumble as a great ODI bowler. Could be just me though!

Symonds is never near the best top 30 players of all time. Don't talk rubbish. I like Symonds but thats ridiculous.

Chanderpaul was a strange one, yes...

It was more for the role - he is a great middle order anchor - in his prime he was/is unbelievable IMO

Yeah, I think I would have picked another 5 batsmen before him

It was all about the role - anchor wise - he is among the best IMO. Shines less because of the team he is in.

Chanderpaul was a strange one, yes...

Depends on what you want from your middle order I guess. I see the only proper batsman picked after him was Smith (Symonds and Yuvraj were picked more as allrounders). Average worse by 3 - 38.7 Vs. 41.6. Better strike rate but nothig sensational 81 Vs. 71.

Chanderpaul's about Dravid's level as an ODI batsman. Great to build your middle order around.

Sorry I meant of last 2 decades, I've never seen anyone play before 1990 so that excludes a lot of good players. He IMO is among top 30 players of that era.

Ah, I forgot your obsession with statistics over actual playing ability.

And no, Dravid was a better batsman in ODIs.

Symonds strike rate is 93 and not 81, unless you mean yuvraj. Symonds average is almost 40.

I wouldn't go that far. Dravid is a true great IMO.

That makes a little more sense. Wouldn't have him there either, but I can see why you do.

That barb was uncalled for. Either way, Chanderpaul is a great batsman, definitely better than Smith IMO, and that's the key. This is all opinion.

I don't really get Donadol's strategy by the way. Malinga as the best bowler? I like the lad and he has a decent average but your key bowler?

He's among the top 10 fast bowlers of the past 20 years. It's not very complicated.

I think you'll find that you won't get a lot of the participants strategies at the moment. I think you'll also find it's because you've picked 4 players.

It's not as much a barb as it is a fact. Cricket isn't as decipherable through statistics as it through actually watching matches.

They play in different positions. And Smith is my captain. I do know which one I'd rather have in my ODI team.

You are talking as if RI and I don't watch any cricket. It is all I did growing up, and still what I do whenever I can now.

And your right - you would prefer Smith, but I don't. That's why we are having a draft. For me, Chanderpaul is a much better player than Smith. I just hope that somebody picks XXX and faces you in the first round. We will see how useful Smith is then :D

:) That would indeed leave me quaking.

Where the fuccck is mbr? I want to make my pick before I sleep.

Just PM me your first and second choice. I will be around and can post the pick for you if you want.

Fair enough. Just thinking out loud.

That's a good question though Top 10 fast bowlers of the last 20 years (thinking ODIs and off the top of my head)

McGrath
Donald
Akram
Younis
Steyn
Bond
Lee
Akhtar
Flintoff

Hmm...he has a case for 10 I suppose but I think i'd rate a couple ahead of him. Vaas has been picked already. Tough to say if he was better or worse than Malinga.

Being a bit generous to Flintoff there...And yeah, had the Vaas, Malinga decision to make. I just rate Slinga higher, is all.

Flintoff as a bowler over Malinga? Not for me

Poor Freddie doesn't get the respect he deserves...probably because of his personality...maybe even his injuries.

Yes stats again but look at his average and his economy.

I don't think there should be any doubt he's a better test AND one-day bowler than Malinga. Malinga's probably a better 20-20 bowler given that his yorkers are better.

Yeah, but I think there are other quicks (I won't name) better than Malinga. He goes for over 5 an over too.

Yeah Gillespie's only just been picked. Would people consider him a better one day bowler than Malinga? I suppose it's debatable but I certainly would.

Anyway, it's probably getting too detailed now. Best left for the match threads I suppose.
