Real Madrid vs Manchester United

So basically you're saying we'll play

Jones-Carrick-Cleverley-Welbeck
-----------Rooney-------------
-------------RVP--------------

Not really no, I expect Welbeck will play further forward than Rooney, I basically expect them to line up like I had them with Rooney playing as a 4th central midfielder with all 4 providing defensive support to the flanks; Jones and Rooney on the right, Carrick and Cleverley on the left, Welbeck getting in and around Alonso with RVP furthest forward

Cheers Vato. Has he been as good as Reina and Hart combined over the last few weeks?

Just kidding. I don't know much about this keeper, Casillas is such a force that you barely even remember you have a back up keeper, but a few months ago Mourinho had dropped Iker for him hadn't he? Over here there had been a few articles on the keeper, and they were pretty positive.

Anyone else think we'll do them tonight? I'm confident, but not sure whether or not I'm getting my hopes up.

Think you are getting your hopes up. It will be tough but hopefully we can nick an away goal (or 2).

As good an emergency keeper as you could get in the middle of the season for such peanuts. I was hoping they wouldn't have bought him and go with Adan in goal.

Mourinho dropped Casilas for Adan, our second keeper. We bought Lopez when Casillas injured his hand a few weeks ago. He has been really good in his first few games.

Ah ok, I got Adan and Lopez mixed up. I think I've seen Lopez play for Villareal a while ago, was pretty good. Well anyway thanks for the clarifications!

I'll be very content with a 2-1 defeat. A 1-0 defeat and a goal for them at OT and we need 3 goals.... would be a very poor result. I'd say if we don't score tonight we aren't going through.

So if we don't score tonight, we're not going through, even though 0-0 is better than the score you'd be content with (2-1 defeat)? You lost me.

I think they might have kept a clean sheet against us in consecutive CL games? He made one stunning save from a Ronaldo 25-yard volley, tipping it onto the bar. Very underrated keeper IMO. Imposing physical presence, strong one-on-one, good handling. Not great with his feet though.

If Jones plays, it will probably be to man-mark Cristiano. In which case, either Valencia, van Persie, or Kagawa/Nani/Young do not play in my opinion. If Fergie has to go with Big Phil on Ronny, then it should probably be this:

de Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Jones Carrick Cleverley
Valencia van Persie Rooney

However, I'd rather just trust in Valencia and Rafael to cope with Ronaldo, drop Rooney in the hole and play Kagawa or Nani on the other flank. Kagawa and Rooney's presence in the team should mean we don't get bossed in midfield as they'll both drop back and come inside to support. Nani wouldn't do that but he'd probably give us a bit more going forward and be better on the counter attack. Young is the in-between but he's been out injured and with no match time I wouldn't chuck him straight in.

DDG
Rafael-Vida-Evans-Evra
Tony-Cleverley-Carrick-Rooney-Welbeck
RVP

Welbeck, Rooney, Cleverley to press high up from the start - I expect us to not sit back and look to just contain them. That would probably not be a great tactic. Tony is the best all-around option we have on the right, as is Welbeck on the left. As many have said, it would be pointless to sacrifice possession-players in the middle to accommodate makeshift enforcers (though I do see Jones evolving into that role in the future).

No score prediction, but I expect us to play well and show hunger through-out.

I agree with the notion above that a goal for us appears crucial.
You can't give a side with the individual talent of Madrid any real cushion.

A 2-1/3-2 defeat is the worst we can afford tonight.

I actually fancy 2-2.

Have we failed to score at all this season, apart from away to Norwich, Everton and Galatasaray?

That's quite impressive when you think about it.
We didn't score against Cluj at Old Trafford either, but that was an off night with a much changed team as well.

We will score tonight, but so will Madrid.

We'll brick it in this game as per usual and happy to take the flak if we smash them or get a nice score draw. Just got a feeling we'll be scared of the club name, player names and Mourinho factor. Hope I'm wrong.

Would be happy for a defensive slightly walls up approach but just not for us to be petrified when we do have the ball, long ball and nervous like we have seen so many times in Europe. We have some big players ourselves you know!!!

Waiting 5 more hours for this to kick off is going to be nerve wracking. Come on United.

Just finished work. Got 50 quid on the draw. Gonna get some nice food and plenty of drink.

I'll take a score draw please. Anything else will be a bonus!

Oh yeah, forgot about that 0-1 defeat at home to Cluj...

Still, that was a horrible result.

I'd appreciate if someone could PM me with a link which might direct me to a crisp high def river for tonight:angel:

I'd like to see us play a diamond with Jones on the right to help cope with Ronaldo:-

-------------De Gea---------------

Rafael---Vidic---Ferdinand---Evra

--------------Carrick---------------

---------Jones-------Cleverley------

---------------Anderson------------

------------RVP-------Rooney------

This or swapping Anderson with Welbeck and playing Rooney in the hole.

That's quite impressive when you think about it.

Everton - 1st game of the season, things weren't looking great on the injury front nor did the team "click" at that point

Galatasaray - Already won the group, had no reason to "go all out", although it still shouldn't mather.

Norwich - a complete and utter feck up. something that usualy happens once a year, again, non-excusable.

Not many here fancy Nani starting. Understandable, I suppose, yet I still see it happening.
