Rayan Cherki

Yeah this is why I think we should go and get Angel Gomes this summer regardless. At a minimum gives us a straight Eriksen replacement in the squad and a homegrown player, and if he doesn't quite work out or can't get the game time he wants we should easily be able to get £20-30m from another Prem team the following summer. And we need all the help with can get with this PSR nonsense.

I would also add Tariq Lamptey to this too, he would be a nice option as a WB for us.
Not a bad shout, but feel we should continue to treat homegrown players well, we let them move on when its best for them and dont put prohibitive fees on them.
If Gomes is ok to try that plan, I think it’s worth doing.

Lamptey is somebody I always sign on Fifa, but is he forming ok? I’d be onboard if he’s in shape.

You think United have been too conservative over the last ten years??
Conservative interms of taking risks, speculating. But also moving players on when its clear it isn’t working.

This generally means signing at the right price.
Other teams do this and it means with the high turnover they can correct failures much faster.

Cantona?? No thanks. Awful attitude, loads of red cards, he was booted out of France.

We need a ready made quality striker. Like David Hirst.
Hirst would’ve been great at Utd in fairness

Tell me more. Could be work in Amorim's system? As a 10 I assume?

He'd be perfect for the RAM slot when you have the ball, Amorim likes players who can carry past players and take them out of the game and get into the box if possible not just pure passers. He's honestly one of the best players in Europe at dribbling but can find a pass as well (also very two-footed).

100% he'd be worth the risk if it's just a case of hoping he adapts to the pace and physicality of the PL and continues to develop and improve his output, but there are serious character (and workrate) concerns that really do not align with the type of turnaround in culture United and Amorim are trying to facilitate at all.

But Cantona was a rarity. Amazing despite all his problems. Worth it.

You don't go out and sign players with attitude problems because 30 years ago it worked with Cantona.

is his contract almost up?

major red flags if he's available for that much, at that age, if not

If you go back a few years, I was really high on Cherki because with his talent, the sky looked like it was there to reach, and then all the reports started coming in, which has led us to 2025 and him being a player you cannot bet the house on.

I have heard about his turnaround, but the challenge here is that he would have to go over and above anything to date just to not get dragged into our quagmire. He leads a simple life where he is relative to being thrust centre stage at the biggest club in England and one where he would instantaneously have a global spotlight, all the trappings that come with that… we’re seeing the affect of on one who would be out the door if anyone would pick up his wages.

Him and his entourage in Manchester and all the other party spots… well, if a fall came, you would be a fool to be surprised by it.

I guess the important thing would be that the coach can tap into the player’s psyche and figure out what makes him tick and feeds into making him want to be the best version of himself. Sometimes it’s ego, sometimes it’s proving doubters wrong, sometimes it’s fear of being a failure etc., etc.

I’m not necessarily torn - at the price you take the gamble - but am under no illusions whatsoever that it could go catastrophically wrong. This is the kind of kid Fergie would turn into an absolute menace; whether we have that capability now, I’m not at all sure about.
I agree with you! I had huge reservations about him but somehow he seems to be growing up and being a bit more mature, and Ive heard that he’s a nice and funny guy in the squad.

However from what Ive heard he’s not a party animal. His entourage is just building him up too much, but it looks like he’s starting to understand he still has a long way to go.

Is United the good environment for him to develop? Absolutely not, like all the other kids that we’ve bought or even brought in through the Academy who are being labelled flops or not good enough for having bad spells even though they’re barely 20yo.
Should United take a gamble on him if his price is low? I think so yes

It can't be the same Cherki thats a Fifa legend in Career mode a few years ago. Surely that dude is about 30 now?!

Of course Angel needs to be onboard with it, but if I was him I would want a shot at returning to my boyhood club to see if I can make it. We could even have in Angel Gomes' contract that if he doesn't start 20 games in all comps then a release clause activates or something.

Regarding Lamptey, he's had his injury issues but has been pretty clear for 12 months now. Assuming he keeps that up, on a free I would take the risk as he's a proper wingback and clearly cuts it at Prem level when fit.

I agree with you, but what is €20m in today's transfer market? You get like a 5th of Antony for that. Cherki for €20m is a no brainer if he is not asking for 250k pw.

A Lyon fan I know is convinced that the story was planted by Al-Khelaifi due to handbags between him and Textor. That does seem far-fetched but to be honest so does the price tag.

For 20m it’s definitely worth a punt. The lad has a huge ceiling and if he settles we’d have a scary threat again going forward.
If it doesn’t work out, we will get close to 20m back again no problem

Some of you guys would reject Ronaldinho due to him not being a good enough defender. The soul of the game has gone, and we’ve allowed nerds to turn football from art to science over the last 20 years.

Best value pound for pound talent in world football right now I'd say. A french maverick turned us around in the 90s so maybe lightning can strike twice.

His fee is so low that as long as we don't give him 200k a week, we shouldn't have any hassle getting rid if he acts out. His upside is so high that it'd easily be worth the punt.
