Suarez pokes it through to Carroll who's a good yard off side in the box, all the Everton defenders raise their hands looking for the flag, but the flag stays down. Andy tries to control it, then thinks about diving, then controls it again as Howard comes steaming towards him Andy dinks it over him.

Just before the ball crosses the line Hibbert clears it but the silly bollocks lines man puts his flag up to award a goal. Ref points to the center circle. Everton players storm around him, blues everywhere in the stadium foaming at the mouth in uncontrollable anger, Gollum kicking water bottles on the sideline as Kenny goes mental. Everton kick off, ref blows for full time, que the loudest version of YAWN you've ever heard. Gollum demands that the FA award Everton a replay in his post game press conference. Blues phoning talkshite protesting a conspiracy between Liverpool and the FA. Make the feckers irate to the point that they're fecking eyes pop. Then smash Chelsea in the final

Roy Hodgson paid the price for the way he talked, not just results. And the truth is he overdid it - his uber-humble tone sounded really weak and was just embarrassing for a big club.

Nevertheless, there was an underlying wisdom to what he was trying to do. Liverpool's problems, IMO, stem in part from mismanagement at board level but in part from their fans. The ridiculous, unrealistic expectation levels are just corroding their club. It ruins good players, makes decent sides perform badly.

Hogson rightly decided the first thing he needed to do was calm them the feck down, get them to lower their expectations and build slowly back to winning ways. He played it badly as I said, but you can see what happens when they go the opposite way - get a manager in who is basically one of their mental fans, with all the delusions of grandeur, bitterness and constantly injured pride that goes along with it.

Your idea that his umble patter was part of a deliberate strategy to instill greater realism in the club and the fans is pretty original. If it was a calculated ploy though he clearly went too far. No way Pool fans were going to swallow being told that a home draw against some lower half team was an acceptable result.

Admittedly I was only half-watching the first half but watched the second and I thought he was a bit shite, I recall laughing at him more more than a few times.
