I'm unfathomably bored, so to all the "9 goals is hardly great"-chaps, here's a few great strikers in their first season in a top-5 league:

Name + Age in seasonClubSeasonGoals - all comps.Assists - all comps. Minutes per goal/assist
Zlatan - 22/23 years oldJuventus2004-0516 goals11 assists133 minutes
Højlund - 19/20 years oldAtalanta2022-2310 goals4 assists135 minutes
Raúl - 17 years oldReal Madrid1994-9510 goals3 assists145 minutes
Lewandowski - 22/23 years oldDortmund2010-119 goals4 assists152 minutes
Torres - 18/19 years oldAtl. Madrid2002-0314 goals1 assist163 minutes
Batistuta - 22/23 years oldFiorentina1991-9214 goals0 assists179 minutes
Agüero - 18 years oldAtl. Madrid2006-077 goals0 goals394 minutes

Do with it what you want. I look at it as a way a normalizing expectations for strikers and their goal hauls in a top-5 league. As I've found out, a bunch of the strikers that became legends, had top 5-league debut seasons where they didn't necessarily score or assist 1,5 goals a game like Haaland or Brazilian Ronaldo.

Højlund will be an extremely exciting signing. I just hope our fans are aware of the fact they can't simultaneously want a young striker and also demand that the young striker is a finished product. It's not how signing a 20 year old works - Haaland is an anomaly in that regard. Højlund will miss sitters, misplace passes, shoot where he should've passed, pass where he should've shot, but hopefully we can develop him into a world class striker and be our first one since van Persie.

It'll take time but there's things to work with and develop further.

Why haven't we considered Ivan Toney ?

Proven Premier League ability.
Big and strong which apparently is whT ETH wants.

I know he's suspended, but that must surely reduce his price and Brentford could probably do with the money.
Doesn’t have the character to play for Ten Hag. Getting suspended for gambling is just unprofessional, what a loser.

Sad thing is, if old Rasmus doesn’t hit the ground running, then half of them will be turning against him
The sad fact is that we have paid big money for the young man as we do not have a player that is reliable to score goals or even be fit to play in that position and that particular position is judged mainly by the ability to score goals and it will not be a case of him bedding in slowly.
It would be nice if Martial could show something in preseason to take a bit of the pressure off but the odds are long there so maybe Rashford will start as CF for the first few games and Rasmus is on the bench so we will wait and see.

It doesn’t even matter what example I bring up. The Victor Meldrew Massive will always find something to be incandescent about. It’s just tiresome, predictable and inane. There are people in here who live by a doctrine of negative critique. They thrive off it, they actively seek it. They seem to derive their value from predicting failure and then claiming credit for their prognostications. But when all one does is throw shit at the wall, eventually some of it will stick. It’s not a sign of erudition, it’s the calling card of toxicity.

This decline in posting standards on the Caf has been synonymous with the rise of social media. Hot takes so hot they’ve clearly melted some brain cells. Virtues such as patience, reason, contextual analysis, have been thrown out of the window in favour of a superficial, reactionary relationship with fandom. We see an overwhelming amount of knee jerk negativity and borderline outrage on a daily basis. Vitriol directed at players who don’t perform at the highest level week in, week out, no matter the circumstances, no matter their age or experience. The masses that think they know better, that relentlessly criticise and belittle, but who ultimately bear no responsibility for success or failures.

That is the point here. It’s always the people who contribute the least, that bear the least responsibility, the people with the least amount to say of any worth, that shout the loudest. The world, and this forum, is poorer for the rise of these minuscule minds. It’s all hyperbole, knee jerkism, and toxicity. The match day forum has been simple unbearable for ages, and in the last couple of years the football forum has followed suit. There are still some great posters out there, who post some brilliant, insightful stuff; but one has to wade through so much shit and negativity to get to it.
I think you are overreacting a little bit. It's football, friends over a few drinks might be having the same conversation somewhere, one might be excited the other might think we over paid, have a few more drinks and then talk about something else. It's just football, there are more important things in life.

If you want a player desperately like we did with a striker you have to dance to the sellers tune. All the power in this deal was with Atalana. He had 4 year contract with them, so we had to pay top dollar. Hes a raw kid, so will probaly take time to hit the ground running. If we can get 15+ goals out of him in the Premier, then for his first season its money well spent. He will probably retire here in 14/15 years if he can improve to score 20+ premier goals a season.

Seeing as Brentford wanted 40 million for Raya with only a year left on his contract, I highly doubt they would have sold Toney for anything less than 80-90 million pounds. He is probably worth that to them as well because they likely aren't finding a replacement as good as him.

It's amazing how this question still pops up when this was the reason we didn't sign a player who almost helped the scousers to top 4 lat year and is set to feature heavily this season again.

Well, each to their own.

Most of the people spitting the most vitriol in here are actually supposed to be happy right now, yet ironically they’re complaining about other people complaining…

I just say good luck to the lad and let’s hope he’s not a dud.

All of those strikers were relative late bloomers who were developing throughout their entire 20s, this is not something that happens for most players. Lewandowski at 20 has just entered top division in Poland and yet he developed into player much better than players who were miles ahead of him at 20.

64m plus 8m in add ons.

So in essence, 4m more than what we wanted to pay.

Atalanta were holding out for 80m

I suppose reporting it as 72m allows them to save face.

Add ons are rarely met. I think Martial had a balon dor clause in his contract. Seems hilarious now.

While you are quite correct, I do think the match day thread is the right place to say stupid things like that and it is half the fun. It's just that some people seem to carry that stupid mob mentality over into everything else. They live for the terraces, real or virtual.

This is pretty much how I feel these days.

Anyway, very happy with the signing. I think he’s great and exciting.

What the hell is this!

Twitter isn't the be all and end all of football knowledge.
This means absolutely zero.

Endrick is 16 and has done absolutely nothing. He shows his talent in Brazil. Can you honestly tell me you would be happy if United paid €70m for him?

He has not looked "okay". He is one of the highest rated youth strikers. It's nauseating how United fans are upset about this. You think it's completely rational to pay €70m for a 16 year old in Brazil but not a 20 year old who plays for Atalanta?

My point was Real have form with scouting young Brazilians.

We do not have form with big money £70m+ signings.

No I would not pay 70m euros for Endrick, I've barely watched him outside of him scoring some worldies. But I assume Real scouts have watched him more.

I have watched Hojlund a decent amount and a £70m player he is not. Hopefully he becomes one.

The number has actually been €70m plus €5m add ons. That is £60m plus £4m. If there are further add ons to bring the total to £72m, they will be very hard to achieve add ons.

Indeed. What you described is how I view football chat, you agree / disagree and give and react to other people’s takes.

If players are being personally insulted for bad performances and there’s a nasty / toxic vibe to what’s being said that’s a bit much for me, but other than that, it’s just chatting shit.

The serious stuff in life is family, health, maybe career etc.

I think @simonhch should just focus on the fact that he is buzzing about a new Utd signing! It’s all good.

Our goal this year is to sustain a title challenge until late in the season. If Hojlund can give us 20 goals in all competitions we might not be winners but we'll have taken a big step forward while he should be settled and growing into a top striker. I don't think 15 goals in all comps is out of the question for him.

I my one way to find out if this guy is worth the money,

We have to give him the chance, but we have to hope that he hits the ground running because we don't have a backup unless Martial gets fit.

During the Fergie era we recruited from a position of strength. Now we are recruiting to get back to that position of strength. The fact that we have filled positions that we needed to already and hopefully there will be another before the season starts is a big improvement on previous seasons.

It feels good that we are moving in the right direction. We will still need another summer window to be fully capable of a title challenge. I can't wait for the season to start especially with champions league as well.
United had more money than anyone else (in the PL) for the most part in Fergie's era, times have changed, the so-called lesser clubs are financially much closer now than they've ever been, they have less need to sell when the big clubs come calling

Isak was a similar price for a player who only scored 6 league goals in his final La Liga season, so hardly surprising, that’s 2023 going rates for promising young strikers.

Fair point and actually one of the few relevant transfers in comparison.

I would say Isak did look both more versatile and a technically better player from what I’ve seen of Ras thus far.

But it is a comparable transfer regarding fee and the player’s numbers.

How can you spend a year watching Martial (when fit) & WW but moan at signing a promising young striker ?!
Atalanta probably played you for 10m more than his value but nothing scandalous.

No it doesn't but you have to weigh up players by their attributes with and without the ball as well and how they fit into the tactical plan of the coach. I watched Van Persie and Benzema at Feyenoord and Lyon and it was easy to see that they had the attributes to improve further. Van Persie was playing out wide as well in the games I watched in the Eredivisie.

And like I've said in previous years, the problem isn't that we overpaid for players but rather we over-paid for players who didn't fit into a proactive attacking play style. And hence I was very vocal in my criticism of Wan Bissaka and Maguire after the manager at the time had made comments about wanting to implement a high line.

All the big clubs overpay for certain players but it's important that if you're going to overpay then the player must fit the profile of striker that the strategy demands. And this lad does fit the profile but will require patience.

Couldn’t disagree more, living in Sweden I’ve followed Isak closely from vastly overrated young AIK youth to big Bundesliga flop to 1 decent Spanish season.
He’s still always looked “meh” in the national team.

They just signed someone for 30m to replace Hojlund. Imagine if that guy outscores him..

Won’t blink an eyelid on what his Atalanta replacement does if Hojlund scores something like 15-20 goals in his debut season for us.

His touch looks way better than Ras’ to me, and he is objectively more versatile given that he can be deployed as a genuine wide player and do a proper job there.

Unless Ras can also do this?
