And if the add ons are achieved, which could very well be very easy, we’ll pay 73m…

So they spent all that time negotiating 4m down from a comically overpriced initial fee.

But then we already know the club is run by absolute feckwits who don’t demand excellence at every level.
Take it easy.

How many on that list have actually been worth the fee?
most of those complete flops. Jury still out on Enzo, Vlahovic, Tchouameni
How many of these players proved to be wise investments? There is no way the fee can be justified for a 9 league goals player

Not the point I was trying to make but I do agree with you all that majority of them are flops/jury still out on.

But those kinds transfers set a precedent unfortunately.

Very difficult to sign the finished article for <30m like the good old days. "Potential" seems to cost a minimum of 50m now. Weird considering nobody knows if a player is gonna turn world class or not. I don't agree with it but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I'm delighted with the transfer, couldn't care less about fee and I hope he does great for us.

It is amazing how Atalanta could get another 20mil quid over what their only other offer for their player was and already have his replacement in place...looks like they were holding the whip in negotiations all the time.

Chelsea signed 2 forwards one with way more pedigree than Hojlund and both cost less.
We're quite obviously not doing things the right way
Look how much we paid for Antony last season

We spent €282 last season and this

Mount €64
Onana €52
Hojlund €70

Thats €468 or £401

I have us as spending £200m last summer (Antony - £81m; Cas - £60m; Martinez - £46m and Malacia - £13m)? We seem to be €50m apart? Anyway, probably doesn’t matter much. It’s a lot of money and I still think we only have a top 4 squad.

Ah okay so you just make stuff up and pass it off as facts? Same as the tabloid newspapers then. No one really knows what PSG were prepared to pay. We do know that Højlund wanted to play for us thereby making their bid whatever it was, almost meaningless.
To make it make more sense, their reported bid of 50m euros is roughly more in line with his value. Cool.

I'm at the same position with this as I was with Mount. Not overly convinced by him, although with Mount I could say I had seen quite a few games, with this lads it's mainly highlights, which doesn't tell the full story.

That said, I will support him and hope he turns out good. No point moaning about the fee as that's par for the course these days. Moaning won't make it any less bearable if he doesn't hit the ceiling for us. So we better hope he repays the trust ETH and the board have placed in him.

HAPPY ST RASMUS DAY

All players are immediately divisive on the Caf, because the Caf always has that vocal element that are ready to have a moan about literally anything. There isn’t a single transfer in the last decade that didn’t come with a fair share of doomsayers. The list of what people get wound up about and the red flags they find is as interminable as it is often contradictory. And of course when someone complains about everything, they are going to sometimes be right; which just reinforces the self aggrandising rhetoric and deepens the nihilistic malaise.

The amount of premature ejaculation that will occur on here this season after a missed Hojlund chance or a poor Mount performance, is going to be almost as revolting as the inevitable “I told you so”s. Never mind the deafening silence after a good performance, because the resident quim burgers always have another target to move on to.

Let us never forget that this is the place that gave us the now infamous “Rashford, new contract or sell” thread, in which an unhealthy amount of posters insisted we should release him on a free due to his overwhelming and incurable shiteness. Those of us who pointed out the utter madness of this suggestion were mocked and vilified for extolling values such as patience and reason, because as Mark Twain said; “Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.”

So no, the divisiveness of a signing is not indicative of anything to do with the quality of a signing. It’s just a by product of the enormous amounts of mouth frothing, knee jerking, miserable stupidity regularly on display here. I genuinely believe that there is a sizeable portion of this forum that actually want to see Hojlund fail so they think they can look good by predicting we overpaid. Of course they won’t look good, ever. Not now in moaning about the fee, or later doing their tribalistic “I knew better” song and dance. In both instances they will look like the embittered, toxic, hate-fans that they really are.

You had him on toast there.

Great post that gave me a giggle.

I like ETH a lot and think he had a superb first season, and therefore I’ll trust him until the signings prove otherwise. I mean, it’s not like any of us are good at predicting the success of a signing anyhow, half the forum shit the bed about Casemiro, Martinez was a midget, Wum/Twig lost his username due to him losing his arse about Zlatan, and Sancho was in the main the most unanimous sure thing signing I’ve seen on here.

EtH thinks he is the right signing. EtH is a really good coach. Let's just see what happens.

Some of the amateur fecking accountants in here, feck me. Some people just have to have a moan about anything and everything. You don’t see Madrid fans whining why they spent x on a player they really wanted. They just celebrate getting them. Which is what we should be doing here. Why the obsession over the fee? The same should be expected of him whether we paid 55m or 75m.

The bottom line is that he was the managers top choice for a CF, and we’ve gotten the deal done at a price we could afford, and early in the window. In a position we DESPERATELY needed to strengthen. I don’t understand what’s not to like here.

Madrid dropped 80m on a bench player for the future last summer, as they forward plan, and their fans took it with typical big dick energy. Meanwhile we’ve got a gaggle of mewling quims, who get a better chubby from winning the bookkeeping DoF olympics, than actually building a good squad. The same harem of snivlepots who are still whining about how much Antony cost, or think jokes about “preparing a bid, or monitoring developments” are still funny.

This place is honestly such a depressing buzzkill most of the time. Shoot me for coming in excited we’ve signed a top talent, for a position we were desperately lacking in. I should’ve known I’d be walking into a nerdy, uninformed, nihilistic circle jerk.
Tchouaméni wasnt a bench player for the future he was a direct replacement for Casemiro, and if anything isnt a very good example to bring up, because 80m was a good deal for him as all the top teams wanted him. Madrid fans know they are getting Mbappé and have just signed Bellingham. so, they arent a good example to bring up about fans that don't complain either, they are spoiled as feck.

All due respect but this is everything that makes the cafe such a downer these days. People forming concrete opinions on players before we've even seen them sign a contract with the club, let alone actually play. It affects anybodys ability to view something impartially.

I think we've got a very talented manager here who knows exactly what type of squad he's trying to build, and is backed up by people that seem capable of improving a lot of our players. They seem to believe that Hojlund is worth the investment so us 'laymen' should take some confidence from that.

We had a very promising first season under Ten Hag, and the squad already looks better than it was. Get excited. Why not?
Football transfers aren't exciting to me. The actual football is.

Top reddism is over 9000.

Why haven't we considered Ivan Toney ?

Proven Premier League ability.
Big and strong which apparently is whT ETH wants.

I know he's suspended, but that must surely reduce his price and Brentford could probably do with the money.

How do you know we haven’t?

I’m guessing likely Toney, along with Kane and Højlund were amongst several names on the shortlist, of which the management has decided that Højlund is the best fit/purchase.

Daniel Levy

We don’t do business with them because of him
Not seen anyone conclusively say Spurs wouldn't sell to us. Just that they're reluctant to do so. However I have seen that the rumoured price is 100m sterling. Which for him is fair considering without the year left on his deal he'd be going for at least 140.

I genuinely don’t think there’s a chance in hell Spurs sell to a “top 4 rival” for 100m.

Toney was one of my top choices. Alas, ‘twas not to be.

Hopefully Højlund turns out to be a better player than him though.

Probably because it affects FFP and thus has ramifications for future transfer windows, and it also directly affects whether or not other players can be signed, and if so, what players can be signed.

That would be my guess.

Not to mention that it’s a vicious cycle where the next £30m player we try and sign is also priced at £80m, before we get a “good deal” at £60m.

Why are people bothered about what we paid for him?
It does seem to add more unnecessary pressure to these players when they do not immediately hit the ground running, and that’s not including how poorly we have spent in the past with these young unproven players.

During the Fergie era we recruited from a position of strength. Now we are recruiting to get back to that position of strength. The fact that we have filled positions that we needed to already and hopefully there will be another before the season starts is a big improvement on previous seasons.

It feels good that we are moving in the right direction. We will still need another summer window to be fully capable of a title challenge. I can't wait for the season to start especially with champions league as well.

It's amazing how this question still pops up when this was the reason we didn't sign a player who almost helped the scousers to top 4 lat year and is set to feature heavily this season again.

I hope you are right but I don’t think so many reputable journos are getting it wrong. Simon stone, Orny, Di marzio are all saying the same thing. £64m + £8m
If they are reporting then the fee is £64m add ons are rarely hit with united nowadays , I think he’ll be worth that in a few years but he’ll struggle first season?

It doesn’t even matter what example I bring up. The Victor Meldrew Massive will always find something to be incandescent about. It’s just tiresome, predictable and inane. There are people in here who live by a doctrine of negative critique. They thrive off it, they actively seek it. They seem to derive their value from predicting failure and then claiming credit for their prognostications. But when all one does is throw shit at the wall, eventually some of it will stick. It’s not a sign of erudition, it’s the calling card of toxicity.

This decline in posting standards on the Caf has been synonymous with the rise of social media. Hot takes so hot they’ve clearly melted some brain cells. Virtues such as patience, reason, contextual analysis, have been thrown out of the window in favour of a superficial, reactionary relationship with fandom. We see an overwhelming amount of knee jerk negativity and borderline outrage on a daily basis. Vitriol directed at players who don’t perform at the highest level week in, week out, no matter the circumstances, no matter their age or experience. The masses that think they know better, that relentlessly criticise and belittle, but who ultimately bear no responsibility for success or failures.

That is the point here. It’s always the people who contribute the least, that bear the least responsibility, the people with the least amount to say of any worth, that shout the loudest. The world, and this forum, is poorer for the rise of these minuscule minds. It’s all hyperbole, knee jerkism, and toxicity. The match day forum has been simple unbearable for ages, and in the last couple of years the football forum has followed suit. There are still some great posters out there, who post some brilliant, insightful stuff; but one has to wade through so much shit and negativity to get to it.
