Not good today, but should only improve. Still caused issues backing into defenders, just some poor decision making and poor passes.

First full 90 is a positive though.

I like the look of him, gets in good positions, is strong, fast and doesn’t give in. As the team improves he’ll start scoring regularly.

Poor performance. Surprised he wasn't substituted after 60 mins or so. Offside ruled out Jonny Evans' goal from a corner. Ruined several decent counter-attacks by making either the wrong choice or simply a poor pass.

Not sure why Onana aims so many long passes towards Hojlund as it was clear from the scouting that he is weak in the air from that type of situation.

Ten Hag has to use Hojlund sensibly. 3 starts in a week is too much.

To be fair to him some of the moments today could have easily gone a different way. There were a few flicks and passes that were inches from being right, it's not as if he was putting them all out of play, sometimes there are small margins that make the difference and on a different day I think we'll see something else. I know that's kind of an obvious statement but I think it's true, some of it wasn't miles off.

Technically he's not a maestro but he was never really built up to be, he's a young striker with very good physical capabilities and we've seen that. He is pretty strong and he's very quick which we've not fully worked out how to use yet, we only seem to use Rashford on the break - that's the default playbook because it has been there for years. It will take a bit of time to figure out how to use a traditional style striker and play to his strengths, because obviously on the ball he's not totally ready in all the link up stuff. That cross from Dalot was the type of thing we've never had as a weapon in the past because of ancient strikers or strikers like Martial that don't really want to be attacking the ball. So it'll take a bit of time to get more frequency into the box (not necessarily in the air, but early balls).

This is a good post, and sums up his start with us quite well. He's got the strength to hold the ball up, and does that quite well, his passing has been a little bit short, especially today, but that's something he can hopefully improve.

The missed tap in was disappointing, but at least he made the run, it's been a few years since we had a striker who would have been in the right position then.

He was unlucky a few times and received some passes slightly to the side of him. It was sad because he seems really capable of turning around and contributing in creating quick transitions so I would have liked to see him receiving the ball at his feet. Looks a good player, good runs.

Wasn't great. I find him a bit meh in buildup but he clearly has potential.

Not good. Not bad either. He looks like he's on different wavelengths with his team mates understandably.

Did a fair amount of good defensive work when defending set pieces, only Evans made more clearances. Some might say that doesn't matter but try to remember the disaster classes Lukaku would put on in our own box, Utd have always had useful CF's in defensive set pieces.

His worst match so far but he’s young and will be inconsistent. Seems to have a decent understanding with Rashford and Bruno already. Great movement for the Dalot cross but should have then buried it.

Link/Hold up play has returned to the team…albeit a slightly clumsy version but I’ll take it for now.

I thought he played well but seeing the reaction in here I’m clearly second guessing it.

Seems to me that Hojlund needs two threads. Future Hojlund and current Hojlund performances.
Future Hojlund looks very promising. Current Hojlund is not good enough to be a starter for a team which is fighting for trophies (and top 4 in PL).

I think he is not match fit and its his 3rd start.
He will he inconsistent but lets see how he does when they team is actually functioning well and hes able to build his connection with Rashford, Bruno and hopefully Mount

I feel like even this version of him can score plenty of goals.

What a strange thing to say
Agree. Weird. Gakpo was fit, and in form, yet took few games to get his first goal when moved to Liverpool. This season he has same amount of goal for his club as Hojlund. Gakpo still got used in different positions beside CF for both club and country. You don't continue our issue with building the team around flawed, unnatural CF. We got burned with "Rashford needs to play CF" (during Mourinho time), and Martial, didn't we?

The people bringing up Gakpo is weird.

He’s 20 and it’s his first season in a completely different league than he’s used to, hardly a shock that he’ll need time to settle in and get used to the overall pace of the league and how little time he has on the ball.

If anything it’s been overall positive, he’s more than happy to go into duels with the opposition, rarely lets the defender go up for a header unchallenged, always tries to put pressure on them and he doesn’t pull out of 50-50’s. Has a great ability to pop up in dangerous areas inside the box for crosses. His link up with the rest of the team will get even better with time, hopefully he’ll start scoring as well. Either way it’s a vast improvement on having to rely on Martial up front, and then Rashford when Martial picks up another injury.

Hopefully gets a rest in midweek.

thought he was good, not fit for the full 90, but did better than most. he's a big lump of a boy and the defenders didnt know what to do with him.

We got top 4, got into 2 domestic finals and won 1 last season with a finished Ronaldo for half a season, and barely fir Martial, zero PL goal Weghorst.

Challenging for PL and CL maybe a tall order considering the issue is more widespread than just CF position. Current Hojlund likely improve our top level, when we get in form.

It's weird to see people write off a twenty year old who has already scored and looked exciting on the pitch for us in less than a handful of games played. Those same people would be singing his praises if he was a kid from the academy at the same age coming through.

Hes 20 and stepped up to a bigger league. He missed a sitter in front of goal, but contrary to what others think, TH needs to play him regular. This will calm his nerves and help to understand his team mates better. He wont get better with a game here and a game there.

Stronger, wiser, and purple hair

I dunno why people feel that way tbh. He was fine. He got himself into good positions, pressed better than most and was available for the ball. I dunno what more you could reasonably expect from him.

He’s getting into good positions.. that’s about as much as I can ask from a striker at the moment with some we’ve had recently. We’ve lacked an out and out goalscorer for some time and the potential is definitely there with this kid.

It's not easy to be expected to lead the line for a club this big at 20 years old, especially when the rest of the team isn't playing that well. There was one instance where Fernandes was in oceans of space and Hojlund either didn't see him or played the completely wrong pass, but that aside, he's doing the right things and I think it's just a matter of time before things click for him. It was fine margins with him not quite getting on the end of that Dalot cross.

I feel like strikers above any other position are judged by unrealistic expectations. I get that their primary job to to score goals but is there no appreciation for the other things they do? He’s clearly made a difference to our build up play. He presses aggressively, he’s extremely fast and physical and I feel he’s been slightly unlucky not to grab some goals. I’m confident that If he keeps this up he will score goals for fun. Just seems harsh to me that just because he missed that Dalot cross by an inch he gets called crap, when if he taps that in this thread would be full of praise. Surely that’s slightly harsh and over the top criticism?!

To be honest I don’t think they would. Likely these are the same people who camped Greenwood’s thread saying he wasn’t all that and Garnacho after him. I think some people just have ridiculous expectations and when the team doesn’t play well, it’s the individuals who pay the price. The truth is and always has been that the individuals are only as good as the sum of the parts.

Only watched the highlights but he seems to be living off scraps. Not a whole lot of clear cut chances being created for him, came close to a few crosses that came into the box but they came in a little to fast for him to get there in time.

You can tell he is still quite raw and I fear the state of the team isn’t going to do him any favours with developing.

He is obviously very raw atm. But I like what I have seen. If he is still playing like this in a couple of years, then it may be a different matter.

He has pace to burn which is an asset that cannot be coached but the young man has a lot of work in front of him in regards to the rest of his game.

Think we really need to sign the right players to play off the boy, he is strong and can hold the ball up but he needs movement around him. Unfortunately I think Sancho would’ve been such a good fit with Holjund.
