Definately a mistake to make him our starting no 9. Doubt he will ever score 15 PL goals in a season for us. Decent prospect but not an outstanding talent.

Your first sentence is very reasonable, and I agree. The rest is too much too soon, he's shown a lot of good stuff, hasn't put it together yet but he's still very young.

We signed two 25 million player for 80 million and 75 million two summers in a row. How does the guy sanctioning these deal still doesn't get a sack? Add Mount on top of that :nervous:

at 21 he should be showing more. He'll become a good backup striker for us but that's it.

Other than being big and fast what are his outstanding attributes that people are hanging their hat on? Trying to see it.

He doesn't have it. The three chances today shows that. He should of had a field day today.

That's utterly ridiculous. One game of poor finishing doesn't show anything.

I agree he should have scored more, but he got those chances by being in the right places, that's a big part of what "it" is for a striker.

Well being big and fast is really good if you can also add goals. In this age of crappy No.9's you'd take that.

He of course just needs to add the goals and as a team we need to start consistently creating chances for him.

Garnacho on the right, that alone helps massively.

The problem is he isnt good enough. His first touch under pressure and at pace is just not as good as it needs to be. David James had the same problem, his control broke down at pace and under pressure. He has everything else but he is just that bit short on something that is unlikely to improve at his age. By the time players have hit their 20's the areas that can improve are reading of the game and positioning sense, the first touch and control are pretty much set in stone. Its a shame because he could be brilliant if he had that. He is bound to have purple patches here and there but I doubt he will ever be consistently able to be what we need.
Was a goalkeeper who never played for us

Well he has yet to show any different? Saying today was just poor finishing makes it sound like its agaist the norm. He never had had a good scoring record, even before he came to us.

Seriously, I hope I'm wrong and in 2-3 seasons he is scoring 15-20+ goals a season. But I honestly don't see it.

If Rashford had made the simple square pass to give him a tap in on 80 mins rather than shoot from a hopeless angle this conversation would be moot

In another month, he's 21 already. Didn't show anything stand out about him, even against League 1 defence.

Or if Hojlund scored 2 simple tap ins it would be moot

Did you miss the first half?

The header i grant you he should have scored. But you miss my point, even with the 2-3 chances in the first half, that five yard square pass allowing him to tap it into an empty net would have been a great tonic to him and eased his nerves.

It was nice that Bruno passed a penalty kick over to Rashford the other week. It would be nice if such gestures were being made to Rasmus more consistently.

I'm getting real Forlan flashbacks so far.

I loved Diego, could tell their was a real player there (which he later proved), and was so desperate for things to start happening for him in front of goal. So far, Hojlund is feeling very similar!

Well yeah if you want to be exact.

Strange to give someone an older age than they actually are. Do you do that in real life? Why even bother with birthdays?

Didn't actually know he was 20, I even thought he was 19. Watched the game and the commentators talked about him and that he was 21. You corrected me and then I googled him. Either way he is 21 in a month.

Im in a similar space, I really like Hojlund and would love to see him start banging them in. Loved Forlan, was so hard watching him at times because he really did try

Well...he's better than Havertz at least.

Not necessarily - Hojlund is perfectly capable of missing tap ins, as we saw this evening.

The good thing for him to today was that he actually did get into good positions and was able to run off Wigan's defenders. Still can't bloody finish, but it's better to be missing chances than missing in action.

It was nice that Bruno passed a penalty kick over to Rashford the other week. It would be nice if such gestures were being made to Rasmus more consistently.

And if that gesture goes wrong, we lose momentum and could lose the tie. We'd all be pretty quick to give Bruno pelters for heaping pressure on a 20-year-old who has taken one penalty in his career, in Austria, when his team was already two goals up in injury time.

Hojlund does not have credit in the bank to be taking penalties off a specialist when there's one goal in the game. I find it strange that this would come as a shock to anybody.

Doesn’t have skill to create for himself/others, fully reliant on the team servicing him. Holds it up ok and will improve, but very hard to see a £75m player there

5 goals in 6 CL games was showing different.

The thing is, I'm not even saying you're definitely wrong here, but there's definitely some good signs there, the bad ones could be him not having it, or could be him being really young in the grand scheme of things.

Forlan was competing with Ruud.

Hojlund is competing with McTominay, he has every chance in the world to make the spot his but he's letting himself down and we'll end the season needing another striker.

That's true about Forlan.

I wouldn't write Hojlund off yet though by any means. He wasn't signed as the finished article. He's still young, and raw. And his touch for hold up / link up play could definitely improve. And so could his finishing at the moment, obviously. But his work rate, movement and penalty box awareness for getting into the positions is very good, and when he gets his confidence up in front of goal then I can certainly see him developing into a good scorer in the Javier Hernandez, Jamie Vardy style of #9's. There's definitely a lot of potential there as that type of striker.

I don't know how he's so bad in the air being as big as he is. He never wins his aerial duels never mind in the box.

I've posted previously about whether he just lacks a strikers instinct, which seems a strange statement given that he is a striker.

However, that header was an unbelievable miss. Someone with a strikers instinct would have hit the target - whether that be by heading the ball down into the ground or heading it into the top corner, even if the keeper saved it I have no doubt that someone with a strikers instinct would have at least made the keeper work.

Moving onto the miss where the keeper knocked it into his path, and then he shot it wide. Again someone with a strikers instinct would have anticipated the ball coming to him from the goalkeeper's save.

I am beginning to have concerns with him. I'm of the belief that what we are seeing is his actual standard - a goalscorer of sporadic goals only... scattered about.

I do not see anything he is good at. His finishing is poor, his movement and creating space is almost not existent. He is hiding behind defenders instead of trying to be in front of them when there is a cross. He is focusing on fighting with defenders on his back rather then just move towards football.
I do not have seen him trying to make a move to get through ball at all.

His ability with the ball is championship level, even if he has some space. In crowded area there is no use for him at all. He is not helping others to make it easier to pass to him. Everyone is having much more chances to score then him. I just do not see anything special here.

I think he has raw technical skills, but lacks the bravery, aggression and mentality required to be a top striker.

They might come, but he really needs to work on attacking the ball or the space without hesitation. At the moment, he shies away and hides far too often.

An over-the-hill Wout Weghorst is a better striker than him right now.

That's how bad he is.
