Probably. But for that kind of money is that not a very expensive upgrade?
I haven’t seen any reliable figure yet?

if he’s the best available on the market then we should get him.

if someone had said to us your summer signings will be Sancho & Varane you’d be delighted

Is the money being talked about not around 10m more than Lindelof cost? For a guy who has won pretty much everything over the past decade.

Talking wages rather than fee.

Who cares, that’s the whole point it’s an upgrade. If he takes our defence to the next level it’s money we’ll spent.

Will he though? I'd say taking us next level would be making Maguire our 2nd best CB.

I'm not dissing Varane here, I'm just not convinced by him that's all.

Varane is a very good centre back and would complement Maguire well IMO. Don't let the Euros fool you. He's not perfect but he's far better than any other realistic (and affordable) option I can see.
This is such an important point. It’s a bit like Maguire, he gets picked on for individual events during a game but over the course of a season he’s as good as anyone right now.

Varane will need to be looked at through the same lens rather than forensically picking apart his every kick, block and positioning.

Varane, Sancho, and a DM who can pass the football and that’s pretty much as close to an ideal window as we can get.

Sell some ‘deadwood’ and possibly try get Trippier, and maybe one other young talented player to go in the youth ranks.

He'd be a great signing.

Hopefully we can nab him. He's the perfect partner for Maguire.

Nah I think you’re underestimating the guy a bit he’s one of the best CB’s in the world. Not to mention he’s won it all, has bags of experience and is only just entering his prime. The only thing you should be worried about is whether we can actually sign him or not.

He's worth the money alone for being able to defend 1v1 and not have his hand held by the fullback all match.

His impact on defense aside when is the last time we have had early signings that would boost morale pre season. Surely we'll be looking at a brighter start to the season going on morale alone

Really not sure about this. Think we'll look back on it as a very expensive mistake.

Well, not necessarily a mistake but I'm not convinced he's any better than Maguire.

If he proves to be as solid and reliable as Maguire but with added pace I'd be delighted.

He will be an asset and improve us, but if he will take our defence to a new level remains to be seen. Looking back at the years with Real, I wouldn’t exactly call their defence solid. Most of the time conceding around 40 or more goals per season.

That doesn’t sound too convincing…

I think he’s going to be great for us alongside maguire. We usually keep it tighter than France did tonight. Switzerland were class when you think about it. What a comeback. Great game for the neutral. If England beat Germany they’ll be favourites.
Yes Switzerland were surprisingly good and managed to explore France weaknesses. And Varane will get help in the box by Maguire especially in the air. As I wrote, I really like him, but he does have a few weaknesses that might be a bigger problem in the PL than la liga.

He is better than Lindelof nomatter how you look at it so he will be an upgrade nomatter. How much of an upgrade is debatable , but i'd say quite a bit..

He will be an upgrade defensively. And getting him as our first CB would mean we would automatically upgrade our third choice as well which I think would have a big impact.

Hah, yep yep I know! Sancho is all but done, and fingers and toes crossed this Varane deal is over the line too. That gives us the rest of the summer to get an actual midfielder.

This would be an incredible signing. If we get Varane and Sancho over the line this early under Murtough and Fletchers reign then it's a brilliant start.

Sell the deadwood next and use that money for Camavinga!

I am pretty sure our window would be finished after Sancho and Varane, that's a lot of money. Maybe a back up right back for £10 million and that's it.

Convinced we are being played for a new contract. Been here too many times before with Real Madrid and Barca players.

I just hope that agreement is not Total BS.

about Varane ability, you are judging him for not covering perfect cross between 2 defenders when oder then that he was France’s top 3 performer with Benzema and Pogba.
Looking at players performances at that Euro Mbappe, Kane and Bruno would not be worth 100 mln total among them.

Player of the season Dias was much worse than Varane.

About Lindelof being at the same level, have you seen him against Poland? His favourite defending position „if I do not make a movement towards opponent and just stand there with my hands behind my back like i am fecking tourist at louvre, no one will say i was dribbled pass”.

If we want to invest in forward players with potential and not much experience we need that at the back to give us some stability and right now there are not better players available then Varane even if we had 100 mln to Pay, when you add that he is available for 50 mln exactly what Ben White value, it is not brainer.

The most important thing he brings to the table is pace and 1v1 play which will allow entire team to push forward and dominate against most teams. Even if that means we concede more open play goals, it is fine by me. Plus surely he will help plug our gaps in set pieces.

Plus it would be a big statement of intent from the club that it is back amongst the big clubs in footballing terms. Varane is one of the elite talent in his position in his prime. We haven't bought such players for long time, except for Pogba. Bruno has organically developed into one arguably.

I’ve just moved here from the Sancho thread, so how likely is this signing? Are we monitoring the situation or already getting ready to prepare a big?

Perfect player for us. His pace and recoveries make him the ideal partner for Maguire. His experience in the CL could also be valuable, given that our team is still fairly callow in many areas.

Plus, this is just the kind of player we've failed to get over the line in recent years. This is an interesting test of how good our new senior management set-up is.

In my head i keep saying there's no chance but all the reports coming out seem very positive about him wanting the move and United paying the cash.

He wasn't good at all last night but you obviously can't judge a player of that one game alone. Varane - Maguire has potential to be our best duo since Rio - Vidic days for sure.

Well France's defense and general formation was all over the place because of Deschamp changing it up from 3atb to 4 midway, so he's not all to blame.

Had some pretty good interceptions from time to time

We've done business in the past, Beckham, RVN, CR7, Hinze and most recently Angle Di Maria, stop being nagative, as a Madrid and United Fan I've seen Madrid sold players at their best, why so Nagative? I'd love Varane to stay but i do feel he genuinely wants a new challenge which i think it's fine after all the good things he's help us archive in his time at the club, i hope we sell to united cause i love the club as i love Madrid.

Not sure but he still looked good enough to me last night. Some exceptional moments of defending even if they did ship 3.

I remember people saying Van Dijk was full of errors whenever they watched him for Southampton, and that we should steer clear.

I’ve criticised Varane in the past for being a bit lightweight but I haven’t really seen him enough to know how he’d do if he joined us. I guess my point is you never really know the impact a player will have until he gets here.

Yes he’s great at 1v1 at counters etc which is maybe more important than being strong in the box, at least if we want a higher line. If we look at how we lost points in the PL last season it was mainly due to setpieces or our first CB pair didn’t play.
One disadvantage with him imo is that he’s not an upgrade if we want a CB playing progressive football. Then Torres looks better.

I thought he was good in the first half last night. A mix of formation changes, non existent defensive midfielder, Lenglet and Kimpembe being useless and the full/wing backs being poor contributed to the French collapse.
