Odd that coming from a Chelsea fan when someone like Thiago Silva seemed to work out fine when he went to another league/country for a new challenge and he's 8 years older, more injury prone and not in the same bracket...

Oh bore off, your whole club has been built on buying your way to the top.

You are not reading my post correctly. I have zero issue with any club spending whatever they want on whoever they want.

I am questioning the motives of the player and the impact that has on his desirability. (and his injury record which is likely to get worse if £ is the desire as opposed to success)

I feel like if he was being linked with say Liverpool then there'd be a lot of posts here about his questionable injury record (misses I think more than 20% of league games over the last 6 or 7 seasons)

Not to mention there is an alarming lack of scepticism surrounding a 28 year old who has won absolutely everything desiring a move to a club who look a fair bit off winning anything of substance and to work under a coach of very little pedigree. Not a case of "where can I go and get a super juicy 5 year contract on mega money, yes that's the club for me" no sirree.
You might have some validity if not for Varane being highly coveted with any club that could afford him - that he would go to - likely to be eyeing up the transfer package and sending it to his party with bow attached.

Varane doesn't need to come to Manchester United to make a lot of money, in fact, if money is his greatest desire, getting his palms greased by one of the oil/state clubs, with their under the table dealings, will be the order of the day, which includes yourselves.

Chelsea don't spend big on late 20's, not on the table, 0%.

If Varane wants north of £300k a week his only options are hardballing Madrid now they have lost Ramos, United or PSG. Don't think City have a need for him and they don't spend big on late 20's either generally. Do PSG need him? Possibly they could do w th another CB if they want to play a back 3 but Ramos on a free is still on the table.

So options for that payday are limited.

More bs posting on here from new other club supporters.

Sheva moved to Chelsea at 30.
Thiago Silva moved to Chelsea at 35.
Giroud moved to Chelsea at 31.
Higuain moved to Chelsea at 31.
Luiz moved to Chelsea at 29.

All of them on big wages.

Chelsea more than any other top club loves buying older players

We’ll sign him, he’ll play like shit for four years and then he’ll complain about a dodgy video referring decision and his lasting legacy in English football will be the headline “Var: Var Stinks”.

You'll be surprised - if Varane's available, the rules which clubs adhere to don't apply. And £40m-£60m is the norm for City. You'd dump one of your CB's in a heartbeat for Varane.

You can add Drinkwater too, around 35-40 million and more than 100K wages. Pedro too.

It's a thinly veiled dig and you know it.

You're only questioning because it's us, he's a world class CB. You'd have him in a heartbeat.

Of course they would.

Chelsea forums and websites were having orgasms when they were linked to Varane earlier.

It is not even thinly disguised, it is kinda pathetic that fully grown adults think they are being subtle or smart with this nonsense.

Varane is barely older than Jorginho when they bought him, about 7 months.
I just meant the idea that because he's stepping down from a successful Madrid, it can only be about money and his motivations are poor.

I like your way with words, man. It's satisfying. (no offense to any oil/state clubs fan. We're all just fans anyway).

Hth, I'm a convert on Varane. I thought he's on decline in the past 2 years. But his Euro is nothing but short of amazing. CB is a bit different than Pogba's case, because CM usually needs to be on certain system to flourish.

A chelsea fan questioning motives of players?

Your whole club was built up on greedy players moving from that great London suburb called Italy

That’s right, Hakim Ziyech was a free transfer wasn’t he?

So that's decent number of players, players who were signed and few players who were loaned with high wages/loan fee.
Ziyech - 27
Mendy - 29
Jorginho - 26/27
Drinkwater - 27
Giroud -31
Luiz - 29
Pedro - 28
Fabregas - 27
Filipe Luis - 29
Higuain - 31
Falcao - 29

Well Akanji’s team is currently keeping a clean sheet so definitely him.

ManUtd fan too

“I have a big dream,” Akanji told NZZ. “To get as far as possible in football. Since my childhood days Manchester United have been my favourite club. I’d like to play there one day.

“But right now, that’s not an issue. I am happy at Dortmund and try to be the best possible person off the pitch.”

Varane for 60m or Akanji for 40? Akanji is 25 years old.
I managed to convince myself he's the next van Dijk a few years ago. Still think he'd be a good signing now to be honest, although I think our staff might be fed up of negotiating with Dortmund for players at this point.

I've always liked the look of Akanji, I'm reliably informed I've only ever seen him during his better games though and that he's not actually that good

Still think he isn't worth anything more than 30m with one year remaining in his contract.

Akanji would be my first choice target. Young enough, fast and strong. Good partner for Maguire and not likely a silly price.

Despite the loss he had a fantastic game tonight for France made Kimbepe and Lenglet look average.

Anything Varane transfer wise should accelerate now whether he stays or leaves.
