I am also remaining sceptical of this transfer because
  1. Burnt by Sergio Ramos and his contract gymnastics years ago and therefore any Real players linked with us are dismissed as contract renewal shenanigans
  2. Unusual for any legit good players wanting to leave Real anyway
  3. Red flag for potential mercenary after ADM

While I somewhat share your scepticism, things are abit different now though .

Real do have some financial difficulties, at least if they want to sign Haaland/Mbappe next year.

Varane supposedly feel undervalued (like Ronaldo did) because Alaba gets double his wages, and he was 3rd in line to get talks to renew.

Real have activly tried to keep him by offering substantial wage increases, ADM was more or less forced out wasnt he?

But yeah, massive grain of salt on this one I agree..

He’s ours, not sure why the majority of the cafe is worried.

None of that is correct. He was first line, his agent is on record about his questions about leaving since 2019. It has nothing to do with Alaba or Ramos.

On status alone huge, right up there with RVP (as the last big name signing I can think of) as far as big names. That said Sancho is a big name.

I’d be fecking over the moon with Varane and Sancho. Keep Pogba and get a DM.
That is a real deal team.

I would add signing Di Maria as huge in 2015. back then, he was one of the best players in Ancelotti's Madrid, but he flopped with us though

all fair points, but I was never able to see red flags with women so no reason I start seeing them now in football, bring the hype train on I want to see that Maguire-Varane defence :wenger::wenger::wenger: dream signing innit

But some players want a new adventure.

Few reasons I think this is different to the Ramos saga.

1. By most reports, Varane has rejected or ignored Madrid's attempts at discussing a new contract.
2. Whilst this is true, he's been there for like a decade now and I think it's clear to everybody that Madrid have come to the end of their cycle, at least for a little bit
3. ADM was forced out of Madrid, Varane himself is choosing to leave by most reports, so I don't think it's similar to ADM at all

If this Varane - Madrid affair is only about wanting the same pay check as Alaba, then I think it would be cheaper to pay up instead of getting a new CB. I get the feeling somewhere that it is more complex than what we know. Do Madrid want him to stay? Does he want to leave no matter what offered?.

I am also thinking, Real Madrid got Alaba and pay him so much more than Varane. Do they consider Alaba a so much better player?

They pay him much more because they got him for "free".
Yea and that’s starting to stir things up, it seems. A risk when paying one or two players high salaries. But getting one of Kounde or Torres with release costs of 65-80 mill euro will be more than increase Varanes salary to the level of Alabas.

Still think we should stay away from RM players. Don't get used again, otherwise that would be just pathetic.

They'd obviously prefer to renew with Varane, but it seems like they've burned their relationship with him and he's now looking elsewhere.

I think he genuinely does want a new challenge now, he's done it all at Madrid and they're not at their best. I don't think they'll want to risk letting him go for free especially after losing Ramos that way too.

I see the Ramos saga continuously referenced as a reason to avoid Madrid players but it seems we might've gotten the story wrong all this time.

Sid Lowe explained the whole Ramos - United story on his podcast recently comparing it to his negotiations recently.

He said that Ramos really was dead set on leaving For United but Florentino Perez refused to let him go.

He said they had an intense negotiation which lasted for 4 hours until Florentino finally caved and offered him a contract that he couldn’t refuse but Ramos wasn’t actually using United. He really wanted the move at the time and LVG was very keen.

This time though Florentino didn't want to go the same route as he's much older so he's finally being allowed to leave.

The Varane situation is similar in the fact that most accounts confirm that he wishes to move on and has rejected Madrids offers of a new deal.

Seems like a good market to be buying a CB this summer. A few good options linked that I’d be pretty happy with.

Much better than when we were shopping a couple of seasons ago.

My prediction. After the euros Varane will have a meeting with Ancelotti where he tells him how much he ‘counts on him’, a new contract will be signed and all will be forgotten.

From what you read about him, he must be a genuinely nice and good person. So I doubt he is a mercenary.
He would improve us so much, I hope we get him for a good price

The best thing about us potentially signing Varane is that he’s at some point in his career, I assume, been coached by actual defensive coaches and you know, taught how to defend. If he can pass some of that good shit on to the rest of the lads then it’ll be 80 million well spent.

You could be right. Maybe it’s been a fact for a while that he wants to leave, and that’s why they got Alaba .
If he wants a new challenge it could either be playing in the PL with us or Chelsea, or winning CL with PSG. Could also be he wants his kids in France. But we should it forget this is highly likely his last chance to negotiate for a “big contract”. Next time he’ll be 32 and not in the same position.

That seems like the most likely outcome to me.

Would be way cheaper to hire new actual defensive coaches if that's the case. 80 millions for a young defensive coach is ridiculous, even if it's Woodward and Judge handling the business. So we should only evaluate him based on his skills as a player.

I was only half serious. I’d love a new defensive coach.

However another part of me also does want to see Varane come in and teach Maguire how to head a football.

Nah. He’s done at Madrid.

Sad, but fair and true

Could be a potential silver lining if Varane did happen. That Pogba might be convinced to sign a new deal. After all his dream move to madrid is dead. Zidane was pushing for the move and has left. Perez is saving all his pennies for Mbappe.

A fellow frenchman joining Utd might convice him who knows? Also if Sancho happens as well that might make Pogba reconsider...

Or alternatively, and probably even more likely, Pogba himself is likely to have played a part in convincing Varane to join United, if indeed that is what ends up happening.

Maybe they could then convince Ole to look at DM's on the continent too because there is definitely value to be had

This

But also Varane has come VERY close to joining us before and is clearly fond of the club, and has Pogba here if nothing else
