Raphael Varane | Signed for United!

This smacks of another Madrid player using United to get a better contract. Ronaldo did and so did Ramos. UTD are better moving on to someone else if there's isn't much progress anytime soon.

Real Madrid and their players pull this stunt pretty regularly, so it seems fairly likely it's yet another example of it.

I couldn't quite understand the hype a couple of pages back, but it seems to have eased down a lot now.

Finding out Real Madrids asking price is crucial ?

Us: €47 ?
Madrid: No

Us: €48.5 ?
Madrid: No but you are getting warmer

Us: oh... €55 ?
Madrid: No you are getting colder again
Phone: RING, RING
United: How much is your asking price for Varane?
Madrid: You mean the buy-out clause? Don't even ask. Even if you are Manchester, you still can't afford it.
United: No. I mean the real price.
Madrid: Sorry, Don't know. I'll ask around. Phone back in a day or two.
Phone: RING, RING
United: Remember me? Asking about Varane's price?
Madrid: Yeah mate. Sorry I can't give a price yet as we're still negotiating a new contract, and the player's on holiday.

I agree. Hope we are wrong though.

If he signs a new deal then this must take the prize (after Sancho last year) as the most boring saga ever.
The Fernandes saga was pretty arduous. As was the Wesley Sneijder saga and we didnt even get him. AND the Ander Herrera saga which was frankly embarrassing

True. But he is not so good that Real want to keep him
They do want to keep him, but they don't want to wait on his final decision for too long. They'd rather get a fee for him than risk losing him for free.

It’s just it’s pretty clear he’s not totally sure about coming here. Do you stick someone on 300k who isn’t sure they want to be here? It’s flopped every other time we have tried

Hopefully when he bullshits his way through his podcast no one on here posts the tweets and gives him the advertising he craves.

That Phil ffs, he blocked me on Twitter because I dared question his sources, full of shit he is.

Tbh I don't blame the players for this.

They're simply selling their service for the best terms possible. So imo a bit leverage here and there is completely understandable. If Madrid doesn't give into their demand they'll sign for us, else they'll stay there. We knew from day one that all these players prefering Madrid over us and would only come to us if things don't work out there.

But truth is I've never ever had high hope for such deals. Imo the motivation and dedication of those players would be pretty questionable even we do manage to sign them.

However for the Varane situation imo it's not exactly like the Ramos one. He's been treated unfairly and disrespectfully by Madrid and imo he does want to come to us, where he's respected and valued.

I've read somewhere that Madrid would make the negotiation process extremely difficult and painful for us. So far it seems the case I think. We gotta wait till he finish his vacation, come back and tell Madrid that he want to leave I think. That could be done only via direct meeting with the club anyway, otherwise it'd be regarded as disrespectful and unprofessional. You simply can't phone your club and tell them you want to leave. The same vice versa.

Yes to me it all feels 50/50 but it would no surprise to me if he signs a new contract. All we know is we are interested this end. The player is on holiday and there has been nothing concrete from Madrid, all we are hearing are rumours so far, nothing concrete.

The fact they have lost Ramos (and the huge wages he was on) and though there is the danger of Varane, there are no big links with them to centre backs suggests they are looking to convince him to stay. Maybe totally wong but it does feel like a "my last big contract, another side is offering to double my wages and I am open to a new challenge......give me a big increase to stay"

ALthough he would be obviously a very good signing, I wouldnt be gutted f we missed out on him, actually more so if we missed out on Sancho or we miss out on Camavinga as both are huge players for us over the next decade potentially and already at tender ages top players already. What does worry me if we miss out on Vaane though, is signing Kounde and definately wories me signing Torres if they are our other targets. I think there are a few really good centre bakcs out there we should target above those two that are also far cheaper if we miss out on Varane

I think it's very unlikely to be honest. But I like the idea that our club have clocked what we all see, and are doing their best to upgrade the positions we're crying out to.
Sancho a brilliant start, a faster quality Lindelof upgrade and another strong option in centre midfield, and that'd be an ideal summer's work.

Yes that is very true the fact that it appears we are genuinely triyng to sign top players both young and older, that is refreshing this summer.

What I would say though, the financial problems with most European clubs and the young talent around at the moment. This is a summer that we really shouldnt fail in bringing in three quality additions. Like you say Sancho a great start, I don tthink there are actually that many great centre backs for us to sign, really only a list of 6-7 and I really hope Torres/Kounde are not the signing. In CM there is a whole plethora though of ptentially avialable central midfielders and personally without going into a whole debate about him again, I hope there is no new contract and he goes if it menas we can sign two of them as then it would be the first summer I can remember we have actually solved all of our short term problems in the one window in well over a decade

I fear that Varane is a big name commanding big money who wont provide good value for what he will give to the team. We already have had too many players in like that...De Gea for one. Plus he was deeply unimpressive in the Euros.
Anyone judging a player based off international performances will be held to account for high crimes against football at The Hague

A lot of Gunner fans deserve to be locked up in there, seen far too many Saka > Greenwood takes strictly off the back of this Euro run :wenger:

He is definitely a redcafe poster doing this for the banter. Fair play whoever it is.

I think it’s very likely he’s after a better contract at Madrid, but that’s just guess work on my behalf. How the feck is it “pretty clear” he’s sure, unsure or anything or the sort? You got his mobile @Ali Dia ?

I'm not sold on Varane after the last two seasons' performances, but when the alternatives are Kounde and Torres, then I'd do everything to get Varane.

Aye this might be the reason why there's been more quiet regarding this story this week...

Doubt anyone ever wants to discuss business while on vacation at a nice tropical locale  , kind of defeats the entire purpose of going on holiday.

Should be hearing new developments whenever he's back in Europe

Mate, we’ve been posting about his trip for 4 pages now

Then again, muppetiers will be muppetiers. Who would we be if we were rational?

He's on holiday and he's completely in his right to consider if he wants to move. He'd be relocating with his family to a new country, to a team who maybe is just as big a question mark as Madrid. Just because someone wants a new challenge, doesn't mean they aren't going to contemplate their decision.

Hopefully a new environment and being next to another leader in Maguire allows him to get back to his level - it seems it's a mental thing, not like he's lost his physical traits and he's still quite young for a CB. My initial preference would have been Upamecano or Konate tbh, but for whatever reason we weren't interested in them. Varane if he can return to the level he's capable of, is as good as it gets though.

Maguire deserves a mention. So much flip flopping and it ended with us being skinned.
