Do people actually watch him play or are they saying he's good because Football manager says he's good? He's been utter shit the past few games and always looks like he has a mistake in him

He's been great for Real Madrid in the past seasons. Seen him most times when he plays. Was on of their best players in the first leg. He's had some bad games recently but to be fair, most of the team has been bad. They've been coasting on individual quality.

He is still an outstanding talent but, I could not imagine the reaction here if Jones had a performance like Varane had against Schalke. He is outstanding talent but, not an outstanding defender yet. He is still Real's third best CB.

You could. Those performances have been numerous here in recent years.

Got to remember as well, most of the time Madrid don't even play with a proper ball winning midfielder to offer him, Ramos or Pepe protection. He's made a few mistakes lately, but he's still streets ahead of Phil Jones or Chris Smalling. He can control a ball for starters...

He's clearly a massive talent who is bound to become one of the best ball-playing CBs in the world. As we know all too well with CBs at United, young defenders tend to have mistakes in them but Varane is already far more accomplished than any of our other options.

How available is he, actually? I can't imagine Real would be all that desperate to sell, unless he actively tried to force his way out for more gametime/bigger wages...

I'd be happy to see United buy him for £50m and make him the most expensive defender in history at 22, because our defence is even worse now than it was when we broke the transfer record for Rio and I expect Varane to reach similar levels.

Why everyone saying ball playing? He's not as good on the ball as Jones or Evans, fantastic athlete and natural defender though.

Agreed, he is one of rare players I would splash so much money, only thing that would worry me are his niggling injuries now and then.

Whaat? He is excellent technically.

Indeed. He's very talented, such a shame we couldn't sign him 3 years ago. He'll become a true leader in defence for whoever he plays for in the future. Madrid will be mad to sell him.

Varane's contract expires in 2020. I can't see Real selling him.

This is Chelsea now being linked with him - they'll probably get him easily with Remy going the other way and Real paying £20m or something for the exchange. All completely above board...

But yes, Real would be particularly crazy to sell him at all, but the links with him exiting Real do seem reasonably constant so someone perhaps is fuelling them.

I don't know but whenever I have seen him this season he was rather shit. Maybe I just picked his worst games but a while back he actually looked quite impressive and far less error prone than looks this season. Also having Pepe as his partner doesn't seem to help and it looks like he works better with Ramos as his partner.

I think DE Gea may be part of the deal for them tho so not really......

They will give us feck all for De Gea. Probably a €30m offer this Summer if we're lucky, if not they'll take him for free in 2016.

Then fine we have to keep him and hope next season we get CL football with him either again or for the first time since SAF left. Not worth selling him this summer incase Valdez proves not good enough next season which could well be the case.

Is there any reason for this to be in the transfer forum? I can't see any half reputable sources linking him to us?

Madrid defy logic in the transfer market, but even they will not be selling him off, especially given the scarcity of top class defenders.

It's not a matter of does Real wants to sell him or not. He wants to leave. He's behind Ramos and Pepe, and thinks he deserves more playing time.

And even goal.com has linked him with move to either Arsenal, United or Chelsea. Reports said he prefers Old Trafford cause he would be automatic starter here.

Is the transfer forum only for United players? Always thought it was for transfers in general.

Would you prefer they kept using defenders like John Terry and Cahill then?

that won't load for me and I assume it's old, but it'll do I guess.

No it's new, the Varane link to Chelsea came less than a day after they had conceded two set piece goals to PSG. To be honest I could never see Mourinho sticking with Cahill and Terry long term.

I could never see them getting Varane either, though.

Yep. Another overlooked aspect is that Varane is very highly regarded by Zidane in particular, who is a major power broker in Madrid for Perez. There was a lot of talk of him vetoing (for the lack of a better term) any move for Benzema when there was place for either him or Higuain in the starting XI. Varane is considered by some to be his protege and Zidane played a major part in attracting him to Real Madrid. One would think Zidane will veto a potential transfer for Varane aswell, especially now that Ancelotti's situation has become precarious in addition to the natural age related decline of Pepe. Letting go of your biggest defensive prospect makes no sense, especially for a club that has defensive frailties and no need for asset stripping to comply with FFP.

cant see Mourinho wanting to play a young partnership of Varane & Zouma together at this stage

which begs the question , what happens to Zouma?

He hasn't been good this season but the talent is there imo.

Yeah. It would only make sense if Varane forced the move himself and Madrid realize they can get some insane figure like 60 for Varane and just spend 40 of it on Marquinhos or Laporte and not have to deal with whining over playing time for the 2 years or whatever Pepe has left as a starter.

Getting Varane would mean Cahill is either gone or a permanant sqaud player.

We'd play a partnership of Varane and Terry (which would be absolutely fantastic) next season with Zouma getting more and more game time. Then JT would be phased out gradually and we'd have a CB partnership of Zouma & Varane for years to come.

Makes perfect sense and I genuinely think we'll make a move for him this summer. I think we're the only likely destination for him if he leaves Madrid.

Marquinhos is already chirping about playing time at PSG and I sure Laporte would do the same.

We have no idea how Laporte would react to being 3rd center back, if that would even be the case (he might just straight beat out Pepe) or if a serious injury to Ramos or Pepe would occur, in which case there might be no issue.

I didn't know that about Marquinhos but that would seem to bode well for teams like us, Liverpool, Wolfsburg, Barcelona post-ban and the few others you could imagine paying a massive fee for him but having space for him to walk straight into the team. He looked very sharp last night as an out of position RB.

Watching highlights of the Madrid derby. My word this guy is lightening quick.

Probably his best game this season. He's been woeful for the most part but was great yesterday so credit where its due. He's clearly got world class potential though.

I'm of the opinion that we should go for a more established name with veteran experience like Godin than someone young with potential like Varane or Laporte. We already have young CBs with potential, we need an experienced quality CB at the back who has leadership qualities.

nail. head.

The last thing we need is another defender with potential, we have enough of those already. At the moment I think CB is the only position where we need a new guaranteed starter, somebody with real authority and ball playing ability.

Has to be Godin or Hummels imo

Varane would be a guaranteed starter here every week. It would be like buying a young Ferdinand all over again.
