He's been pretty good for us overall but his injury record means he wasn't a great signing. Why do we always get the crocks/shite from Madrid/Bayern? Anyway lucky for us, we have Lindelof who is not as good but at least is always available.

  • One of the reasons Manchester United are reluctant to let Harry Maguire leave for West Ham is because they fear Raphael Varane is out for six weeks with injury.

The season's getting better and better.

This start to the season has been atrocious really. So many injuries to start off.

Would rather play Evans over Maguire if Varane is out for that long, and Lindelof is needed to cover elsewhere. Seems like we're getting bad injuries every match.

Feck me though - Shaw, Malacia, Varane, Hojlund and Mount all out and it's not even fecking September.

So we've now lost our top scorer too.

End this season already.

So he might miss:

Arsenal (A)
Brighton (H)
CL matchday 1
Burnley (A)
Carabao Cup 3rd round
Palace (H)
CL matchday 2
Brentford (H)

That's absolutely why we should have gone for another CB this summer rather than keeping him.

He's not reliable and we're paying him massive wages to miss 3/4 months per season.

Fair enough, but why? You need experience mixed with young players in the squad. We had the luxury in the past of core squad members with a history of winning, so integrating the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo for example was more seamless. Mainoo and Garnacho will benefit from having proven winners like Casemiro and Varane in the squad.
I take a bit of a pessimistic view of how we operate because the PL destroyed itself by letting a country own a club. It means you can't just stay with the same model we always used which was this constant rebuilding of teams every 3-4 years as younger guys would come in and dislodge others and you would see a team peak then need to be refreshed and the cycle started again. Now you need to be bolder in my opinion and build a team with a much longer term horizon - essentially what Chelsea are doing but ideally without the ridiculous fees, I think the Case, Varane, Ronaldo, Cavani etc type deals just aren't going to move the needle enough to be worth it.

Even our best youth players like Amad and Mainoo are out for a while too. Very little bright sparks to the start of the season. Here's hoping we peak late, then...

Is he really on £340k a week?

Blimey.

He was a free, right.

We keep him. He's still a top defender. Do we have a better Centre Half?

Shock.. we all knew the likelihood of Varane getting injured at some point was high. We should have signed a 3rd choice centre back (Kim for example) ahead of Mount. Such a disaster of a transfer window.

Signing a 3rd choice CB instead of a 1st choice midfielder (which Mount is, whether you like it or not) would have been pretty stupid.

If Maguire was more open to leaving we would have signed both, but he wasn't.

We paid £34m for him. The wage is big but we signed Real Madrid's 28 year old first choice CB.

He is our best centre back, but the more time he spends injured the less useful he is to us. He's a vocal leader at the back, but one of his biggest traits is his pace. His legs are starting to feel it, I feel.

Yeah.. real stupid. We all know Varane misses periods of a season out injured all whilst Mount has done nothing but complicate our midfield. If that’s ETH vision then I really do worry for the season ahead.

If only we'd hired you mate - nightmare.

Yes, real stupid.

At the end of the season there was near-unanimous agreement that midfield was a priority position for us, because Eriksen could not be relied on as a first choice player. Just because you don't like who we opted for as that midfielder doesn't mean the obviously correct priority order wasn't correct.

And again, it wasn't either/or. We would have signed a CB had one of our CBs left, but they didn't. Using Varane's injury to criticise the unrelated Mount transfer is nothing more than petulant whining.

Was anything I said wrong enough?

Yes, Mount has played two competitive matches for us. Varane is going to miss about 4/5 games at the moment and it's unconfirmed. The transfer window isnt closed yet.

Calm down.

At best in a 38 game league season United get roughly 24 games out of Varane.

Lindelof will do a job when he's away but United are just one more centre back injury away from the dreaded thought of Maguire starting any important match..

I like Mount, just don’t think he is what we need and that money would have been better spent elsewhere or on a different type of midfielder. So no, I’m not using the Varane injury as an excuse to whine about Mount. I’m simply saying the money used for him would have been better spent on a third choice/ up and coming defender who can step in and when Varane is on the treatment table. I don’t think Maguire leaving or not has any bearing on such a move either as it’s obvious and was last season that he isn’t in the managers plans. If he wants to stay here and waste his career that’s on him but I still don’t see him suddenly being elevated in to the table because of this injury.

Trouble is, that’s something a lot of top reds are telling people to do lately whilst we are in the final remaining days of a window that to date has been a farce.

Lindelof will do a job alright....not a very good one though.

When we signed him I asked if he's injury-prone? "No" said the caf's transfer gurus.

The Glazers are not going to sanction cover for CB, LB, CM in the last few days of the window.

So EtH will just need to get creative and turn Casemiro into a CB for a few months.

Very boring mate.

He's just not reliable enough to be considered a first choice centre half. You have to plan for a third of the season or more when he won't be there.

Think Lindelof potentially deserved a run anyway, but we will miss him v Arsenal.

Not being hysterical is nothing to do with being a top red. It's to do with not being hysterical. It's rarely the right option.

A six week injury really shouldn't dictate squad planning decisions.
