Almost like Laurent Blanc. Signed him when he was on his way out.

Varane is not the guy who stirs up drama. If he feels disrespected by the manager then he will simply leave in the summer. But a lot can be said on how ETH handled him because Varane is the last guy you would get into a fight. I've seen so many games where Pep with 10 man down was more threatening, ETH is out of depth at this moment. He's not elite.

How did EtH treat him out of curiosity, he has been one of the 1st choice CB's since EtH arrived including the start of this season, so I am curious to this treatment you speak of

That's a good/interesting point. Maguire always seemed like he might be the type to organise but maybe he isn't? Would explain a lot of the terrible displays he's been involved in over the years because he's usually paired up with partners who aren't organisers either. Lindelof is quiet as a mouse too. Which was all compounded by DDG also being far too quiet. I was hoping we'd sign a keeper who might speak up a bit more. Not seen that from Onana yet. The lack of leaders at the back might be one of our biggest problems.
He certainly wasn't at Leicester.

Like the poster you replied to said, Evans was doing the talk. Still kind of mad that both of them are above Varane in the pecking order. If even he's fragile, he's still ten times the defender both Evans and Maguire are, and it's not like he's 40. Not playing against Man City seems to have started something between Ten Hag and him.

Didn't he turn up to training the day after?

Not sure why people are speculating about issues between Ten Hag & Varane

Varane was injured, Maguire played well so stayed in the team

Then Evans and Maguire have a solid partnership after playing together for years

Not sure why this is so controversial really

With Evans out and Varane not covering himself in glory midweek, will be interesting to see who starts v Luton

Everyone keep pointing Varane's age while Maguire is of the same age as him :wenger:

it’s probably not his age, it’s his ability to stay fit that is an issue. Otherwise, he is better than any other defender at the club. An elite defender. Just injury prone, which is terrible

Is there a list of what type of injury he suffers? Reoccuring or different ones?

Not really.

Evans best ability now is his organisational skills. He's always been a talker and leader of the defensive line. Varane never had to do it, he always had Ramos. Maguire has never had to do it either he had Dawson at Hull and Evans at Leicester doing it.

So, you have 2 lads who can't/don't talk, or organise and lead a defensive line that cost near 200m on the pitch. You're asking for trouble.
And his passing with both feet

Varane reminds me of Smalling as he is a really good one on one defender and is good in the opposition penalty area but the passing game is woefully short of what is required at a top club and it makes me wonder why this has never been mentioned when he was at Madrid and I never really noticed it when he played for his country either.
Did he just receive the ball under no pressure and then get rid as soon as possible?

Evans maybe, but not Maguire. Varane lives off his reputation. You actually watch him play and, ever since he's joined, his weaknesses have been blatantly obvious. He's not had a period of good form for us that Maguire had before becoming a meme.

I agree. Really weird how hyped he got last years. Probably more about apperance and profile than what he did for us. Not better than an average PL defender on the ball. And he is not very agile anymore either.

He is an experienced defender. Rarely makes mistakes. Strong in the air. But he offers little more than the basic. He is not a defender that enables the team to play with a higher line or helps the team beat the press.

I hope not. Seems to have fitness issues at the age of 30??? Should be still at his best. Consider Ramos?

He should be making a statement, telling ETH that he's one of the best players in the squad and must play. He should be an absolute leader in that changing room and on the pitch.

But he's not. Because it's easy to be silent, meek, say pretty much f*** all at Man Utd, as that's the culture. Who represents Manchester United on the pitch???

Probably because most players who join this circus of a club quickly become demotivated and give up.

Evans has been very underrated since he returned. Sort of like how he was when he was with us the first time too

He's been dropped because Maguire is playing better than him. No more to it than that.
So often the simplest explanation is the correct one.

If he’s sulking because he’s unhappy about it, and he feels entitled to play ahead of Maguire because he’s four times CL winner Raphael Varane, then he can get stuffed. But we can’t be certain of that.

He was very good/important in our best run of form as a team last season.
Whenever one of our players goes into decline, or just through a period of poor form, a load of inverse Nostradamuses appear on here to tell us how they always knew said player was crap. It’s incredibly tiresome.

I do think Varane misses Martinez though. Like Smalling with Blind, he’s at his best with a top passer alongside him.

Is there anyone ten hag hasn't fallen out with?

At what point do we start questioning the manager rather than the players after yet another high profile falling out? It’s getting a bit ridiculous now.

Game over for Varane… if he can’t get games ahead of the 2 that are starting today. That’s a laugh. He’s won more trophies than both of them put together

Not in the team again.

Must be off in Jan
Yeah. The message it sends is very loud

wtf happened? Did Varane attack his cat or something? Varane is CLEARLY not the worst CB, not behind Maguire and Evans and Lindelof, so they must have majorly fallen off over something

So weird and not good for us

It’s been obvious there’s a problem and it was noticeably frosty between them when he was subbed on against Copenhagen.

On "The Promised Land" podcast they were hinting that Varane and Casemiro have both received huge offers from Saudi and want to leave, hence the drop offs in form.

Obviously I have no idea whether there's any truth to that.

It does raise an interesting new tactic for Newcastle to disrupt rivals though...

Eventually when you seems to have a problem with basically everyone, maybe you’re the problem?

This season he has been our worst CB comfortably.
Grab the Saudi money in Jan and get rid!

Three players are hardly everyone, don't be dramatic. If Varane can't handle competition and expects to be in the first team no matter what, that is his problem.

Some baffling selections by ETH this season which he persists with despite not scoring enough and shipping goals. Is he obsessed with having a starting left footed LCB at the cost of excluding Varane over the predictable cross field passing bellend and lindeloaf?

Varane seems like the most unproblematic player in Europe. Has had many managers and been part of great teams but the first time he seems to have an issue is with ETH. Posters will pretend this is just an issue with Varane but we really need to question ETH’s man management especially with top end talent.

The turn on Varane in the last couple of weeks has been disgusting. Sure he hasn’t been the defender he was at Madrid but he’s still unquestionably been our best CB. A good four game stretch from Maguire and Evans and all of a sudden it’s Varane who should be sold.

If he is to leave in January it sends a very bad message about Ten Hag in my opinion.
