Shout out to those adamant it was the knee for no reason at all. Typical drama-queening.
Think it was his reaction that made people worried. Not often you see a full grown man cry over a little stretched hamstrings so made me worried at least.

I’m wondering if we’ll see Mctominay play more in the next few games.

With Varane and Ronaldo not playing, that’s our 2 best headers of the ball on set pieces.

We could be in a situation where Casemiro and Lindelof are our best headers in our starting line up!

Phew. Selfishly want him to miss the WC, so he is really fit for when the season re-opens, but he deserves to go, of course.

Exactly the way he stood on the ground screaming and crying made many of us think it was more serious than, fortunately, is.

Hopefully he won't miss many games and he can go to the world cup, player's moral is massively affected when they miss important tournaments.

I think he's one of our best players and his partnership with Martinez is fantastic.

But we need to start scouting a replacement now. He's injured far too often and his skill set is fundamental in the way we're able to play a high line.

His replacements in the squad just don't have his pace or dominance.

Rest well Rapha. Victor 'Iceman' Lindelof will save us.

God help us.

I don't think his pace is important, how many times do you see him at full pelt running against a forward. He's really great at reading the game. Also when watching his partnership with Martinez, it's obvious when Martinez charges the way he steps back to cover. He is also a good tackler, so when he has to defend against one on one he can win the ball. He really is like a rolls royce of a defender, so classy and calm and everything seems so easy, certainly not a ferrari type that uses his pace to bail him out. I do think Lindelof might be a good substitute, he is nowhere as near as good, but he'll be naturally covering for Martinez and he also rarely gets beaten (mostly because he refuses to tackle and rather trying to steer the attacker away into less dangerous areas).

Also I think what gets underrated is also how much Varane helps Dalot defensively, by giving him instructions. If you watch the games closely you can see Varane instructing Dalot when to tuck in, when to press etc. We'll se how it will work with Lindelof.

Such a shame, he is a great defender, but United should be able handle next 4 PL games without him.

Thank feck for the good news. I felt horrible watching him hide his tears last night. Get well soon Rapha and have a great World Cup.

Hopefully he wasn’t crying because of the world cup. He just wants to continue playing for us injury-free. The way the players were rallying around him shows how respected and well-liked he is in the dressing room.

I thought the players lost a bit of their focus after his injury but so was mine.

I'd prefer he misses the world cup if I'm honest

I worry about Martinez too. Didn't he clutch him hammie in the middle of the 1st half in the Chelsea game?

That's not very nice, is it considering he was crying coming off the pitch realising he will probably miss the world cup. You'd rather he be sad, so you can be happy.

Yes, if I'm being honest I prefer he missed it. Didn't say it was nice

The World Cup is the pinnacle of football. Im happy his injury is not serious and he can likely go. The best players need to be part of the show.

The problem with this is it means a relatively long-term injury which would require lengthy recovery time. So it would take him time to get match fit again and back into the team.

The best scenario from a purely selfish United perspective would be for him to be in the France squad and training, and probably not playing.

No it doesn't, I was just stated my preference, based on reports he could be fit to play 2nd group stage game.
I'd rather he didn't rush back and risk another injury

Varane = Rolls Royce
Martinez = Lamborghini
Lindelof = Ford Mondeo
Maguire = drunk chimpanzee riding a unicycle surrounded by priceless vases

Hopefully, the Deschamps isn't daft and rush him back. He can play Saliba in the early rounds and save Varane for the late rounds.

hope so. its more varane himself in this case, that could rush back to be part of the wc. but all in all i am happy he is only out for 3 pl games, that should be winable with lindelöf

Varane’s crying on the pitch and people still openly say that they want him to miss the World Cup. With supporters like these, who needs enemies?

He could probably miss the group stage games but be back for them in the knockouts if it's not as serious as feared.

Didn't Verrati or some other big player from the Euros come back from an injury in time for the knockout games?

I said prefer, get it right

I’m not sure that’s the defence you think it is. Why would you say prefer players you truly support missing a pinnacle of their career?

If you are gonna wish for something, why not wish for him to recover ahead of schedule?

I didn't

Yeah that's not as bad as we initally thought it would be. He'll probably miss first 1-2 games of WC and then start playing which is fine. It's World Cup and Varane deserves to be there and represent his country, as much as we'd probably all like if our players only played for United :lol:

I wouldn't want any of our players to miss the World Cup. A player only ever gets to play in a handful of these in their career.

I would be delighted if we went back in for Timber. Different but has exceptional attributes which would contribute to our build up.

We might struggle a little aerially, but I think we need to cope with that. Already before Maguire and Martinez had their first game together, I feared the pair of them would be a bad pairing and the matches they’ve played together haven’t really changed my mind (7 goals conceded in 180 minutes). Maguire compensates for Martinez in the air, but that is the only good thing. They are both defenders who attack the ball and opponent in front of them leaving an opening behind them. As ground duels tend to be a 50/50 chance or risk of being overplayed, they both need their partner to be a covering CB who care more about the space behind than the opponent in front of them. Both Varane and Lindelof are that. With Maguire and Martinez there will be the constant risk of them being overplayed without the cover behind.
On top of that I think Maguire is a bit too slow on the ball but that might be improved by instructions, as I don’t think he lacks that ability, just that he sees himself as a ball carrier.

He has started 8 PL matches this season and walked off injured in 2 of them. This must certainly give ETH something to think about. If he wants to continue to play Varane, he needs to rotate more to rest Varane, but also to keep the backups fit and ready and being able to form partnerships.
Can't really disagree with anything you said. Basically a trade off of either being more solid defensively on set pieces vs overall play. I would like to see Maguire get a run of games at some point because I don't think he is nearly as bad as he appeared last season. At his best, I think he is on another level to Lindelof, but we haven't seen that in over a year.

Off topic but who will be France’s first choice CBs if Varane is out?
It's hard to say at this point with the fitness of our CBs and the injuries suffered by them, but I'd guess a combination of Saliba/Kounde/Upamecano/Hernandez. Varane will definitely go to the WC if the timeline is correct, and I think Deschamps will slot him back in as soon as he's match fit.
