Ralf Rangnick | ex-interim manager | does anyone rate him?

It’s a lose-lose job for him but I think the approach from the club bizarrely makes sense.

I think (hope) we’ll see a mass exodus in the summer and if so, that’s a recommendation from Ralf, along with an appointment to take us forward, again Ralf will support that.

I remain optimistic for next season given this approach, it’s been underwhelming since he was appointed, but we were in a mess and anyone coming in now was always going to find challenges.

There will be an exodus, that's guaranteed. The question is how many players in total

It’s debatable how much influence he’s actually going to have. He’s only going to be a consultant at the end of the day, and his performance as manager isn’t going to do him any favours when trying to push his agenda with senior execs.
Maybe being underwhelming at his job is his strategy to become a United executive. Worked for Woodward very well.

If he ends up being the full time manager I'm not watching our games next season. We need a proper manager, someone who has experience in big teams

You don't think if he got some of his own players in and got rid of half the fannies we wouldn't see an improvement? The squad was/is mentally broken. It's going to take more than 20 games before any resemblance of a football team begins to appear.

Not my type of cup. Too safe. Like Ole. No top guts no glory. Underdog mentality = counter attack set up. Like Ole.
This myth that we're a counter attacking side has to die.

If they kept him on I'd be on board but it might be a harsh shock for people that think the only reason we are poor is due to some wierd lingering ole voice in the players head telling them not to try. The progress under Ralf has been extremely gradual. He needs more workman like players in and less quality. The question for me is where does that bring us in the end, what would we be rebuilding towards, what is his actual ceiling as a coach etc. It would have to be some level we have never seen in his career. But if it happens it happens and we would have to enjoy it.

I find this current team far less likeable than oles from last season, and probably on par with mourinhos best teams for likeability. But I could see how that improve if we trade some of the more technical players for more work man like players, given the style we are trying to emulate

I rate him higher as a consultant than manager. Because there are better managers than him but we have no consultant and the current board are clueless when it comes into the big picture aspects of the club. I also don't think the owners are daft enough to hire him as a consultant only not to follow his advices. They're all businessman so when it reached the point where they wanted a consultant that had no previous connection to the club to help the club, it implies they want to fix a huge mess in their business and trusts nobody in it, hence an external force has to be applied to it. So I reckon the plan will still be followed - a new manager and Ralf as a consultant. When that happens I'd be closely following the club again. Even if it means a clear out or more years of no trophy. What I want is United to evolve as a club. It's been a long time coming.

He was asked to steady the ship and try to get top 4. I'm willing to bet they had zero expectations of him in the CL or even FA cup.

When he first came in he clearly went radical thinking he could implement his pressing style. I think he rapidly realised these players are incapable of it having been allowed to 'go out there and enjoy yourselves' for three years.

My take is that Ralf then decided to be pragmatic and let them play a similar system to what they already know. Meanwhile he'll also have marked the cards of about 90% of the squad as being good to be phased out once he's in his preferred role as consultant.

There's no way that Murtough isn't going to listen to this guy in the summer. These players are deluded if they have the idea that whatever ralf thinks isn't important a he won't be manager much longer.

I'd keep Varane and Sancho and put the rest on the transfer list or leave on a free if their contact is up. Make a few smart signings and bring through the kids and accept its going to take a few years of building with a plan to get back to being competitive. If we time it right then we might come good just as City and Liverpool are needing a rebuild

Yes.

Right.

His managerial record for United:

20 matches
W9 D8 L3 45.0%

That’s the worst record (so far) of any manager, including interims, since Dave Sexton who left the club in 1981. Granted, it’s only 20 matches, and it’s not his squad.

Hopefully we’ll perform better in the next run of matches, but with Leicester, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea still left to play, the fixture list is pretty tough. Arsenal have two games in hand and only have Chelsea and us as fixtures with so called top 6 clubs. They will be at home against us.
He wasn't regarded a particularly good manager before but interims usually aren't.

Nah. didn't have him in high esteem as a manager previously.

He is unreliable and can't stay fit

This has been obvious for months. Its why the players don't give a s-t what he says and he has no authority over them. In their minds he's pretty much a supply teacher and all this talk of Ralf going 'upstairs' is nonsense. His consultancy was always more spin than substance. From day one it was never defined.

So then what was the f’ing point in bringing him in as an interim when there was many others choices? Surely the point was to grt him in properly to help sort the club out but no these bankers still know better than footballing minds don’t they. This club is still a joke

No wonder it seems the players don't give a rat's ass about manager. Does this club even know what it wants? Seems like there is no sane mind left in Club to steer it in right direction.

Saw this coming as Ralf would have demanded a meritocracy based system that would threaten and question the jobs of the clowns incharge right now. Expect more nepotism, strategical errors and underperformance in the future with these guys incharge.

That's disappointing. Here's thinking we're planning a holistic approach.

We deceived ourselves because we wanted to believe this. The club knew we'd fall for this self-deception too, that's why they put it out there.

After the last 10 years it was easy to think going for Ralf meant the club had decided they wanted to go in the direction of RB, with high pressing, high intensity football and this was the first step.

The club saw no drawbacks in letting us get carried away, after all it got the fans off their backs.

How vague are those tweets, though?

If he's not the DoF we've been led to believe, what exactly will he be doing? Sounds like a glorified scout to me.

Won't even be that, trust me. A zoom call every month maybe?

Not hands on, he could do his new job via telephone.

Exactly. Literally phoning it in.

Sky Sports is the source so take it with a pinch of salt. Their ability to land genuine scoops has severely diminished. It reads like an opinion piece masquerading as legit news aka the Miguel Delaney way of writing.

No surprise for me. People assuming some kind of sporting director role were delusional.

Nowt much is changing upstairs and thats why I’m no more confident in a Ten Hag than a Poch because I think they will both be doomed to fail.

At this point change will have to come from outside i.e. New owners because The Glazers won't turn United into a trophy winning club.

Melissa Reddy is the source, a well known Liverpool mouthpiece. A pinch of salt isn't enough.

Yeah I think all this Poch or Ten Hag stuff is much of a muchness unless they're supported with the right structure, which they won't be. So, honestly, who cares?

If we're lucky we might win an FA Cup or something in the next few years. However, this club is not set up for big success.

I said that before in response to people thinking Ralf deserves patience just because he's going to shape the future of the club and all this nonsense. The reality is we never knew what this consultancy role was about. I have no doubt he'll have no say anything and will have nothing to do bar just giving his personal opinions that can be ignored.

Even if the story is bollocks, it's a stone cold fact that we can't trust the owners or the board to make good footballing decisions.

Those are tweets from Sky Sports, who have been behind the pack in all things transfers and rumors, for years now. They are totally stirring the pot and way too many people are falling for it.

Rangnick has an idea of what his role can be and should be for maximum impact, but yeah, the club will ultimately have the final say. If Murtough values Rangnick as highly as it seems, he'll allow Ralf to be involved as much as possible.

Far too many people thinking they know what the role is going to be only shows confirmation bias is high.

I hope you're right.

Not hands on, he could do his new job via telephone.

Is there a job title for that kind of work?

It's a shame because I was under the impression that the club had finally hired a DoF and that our transfer business will be more targeted now, rather than the scattergun approach of Woodward.

Oh well.

Not really a surprise. If we're using this period of no fixtures to have talks with candidates for the manager's job then you'd expect Rangnick to be involved if he was to have an important role next season. Instead he's having a nice time in Barbados. He'll be asked for his opinion on certain things and be in a position to give feedback to whoever takes over but that's as far as it'll go.

The board have probably looked at the terrible job he’s done as interim manager and decided that they don’t want to put him in charge of rebuilding the structure of the club.

If this is the thinking it just adds to the lolz. Even if the circumstances surrounding the United job weren't problematic, nothing he has done as a coach effects his ability as a Sporting Director. It'd be like judging a movie producer by whether he's a good director. To think Ralf's inability to make these players obey him has any baring on how he builds clubs is odd.

No, the board still have no intention of installing a proper football structure. Joel is more convinved than ever of Martial's potential, and wants to approve all signings, Jones will be renewed for another 5 years. Ralf has a strong record on recruitment and installing a coherent decision making structure. Glazers never had any interest in this, they really dont give a sh*t and its all PR spin. OT rebuild another nice bit of PR fakery. And Arnold is just their next stooge after Woodward. No change then.

What a surprise. Can't believe the person who was hired as a 6 months interim manager, and given a consultancy contract on top to make up for the 3 year contract he was leaving, will not, after all, be running the club himself and transforming it top to bottom. Instead he will be interim manager, and after that, consultant. Who would have thought.
