we are in the shite and it's right up to our ears. RR gonna have to make some big decisions about some very high profile players. This is a strange mix of personalities that are not gelling. CR negative energy at times is affecting some players confidence

When we have possession our players look like chickens being chased by dogs.

When City have possession they look like there isn't any opposition on the pitch and it is a walking pace drill.

I see a few people here talking about pressing. Did anyone see us press today ? I don't think I did.
We have a team that didn't take direction under Ole. So, what makes you think that they'll be doing what Rangnick wants?

Seriously, this squad needs to be gutted by at least 50% of the brainless fools that don't comprehend the concept of teamwork.

Something tells me the bigger ego's within the dressing room will win out once again and RR will be sat there thinking 'my bank balance is healthy ($) but what a waste of time'.

Aaaand the clusterfeck that is United post SAF continues to roll on.

Every manager at this level will be able to see what went wrong. Sometimes you just cannot change anything if you don't have the tools available to you.

And sometimes saying it isn’t a good thing. If a manager was honest in interviews and press conferences then he'd be sacked in 2 months.

Who would you dump?

Just waiting for Pogba to return. My current viewpoint is that this midfield is bottom 3 tier. Mcfred is absolutely pathetic for a club who thinks they should be 'winning'

My hypothesis is with Pogba we will regain some control in midfield and that can help the lazy front 4 who can't do shit without the ball. Then if that's the case, Pogba alone can't do it, it would require another CM that can hold the ball, controll the play etc.

If thats wrong and that doesn't happen then I don't even know. Start from scratch yet again

I dont like threads like this that popup after new players/managers first few games. They often appear on the homepage as well, make us look like a bunch of idiots.

It will take time.
Ralf clearly knows how he wants the team to play.
He mentioned physicality and intensity several times.
Losing the ball and getting it back.

This is a team that an idiot had mismanaged.
It really is about rebuilding the team.
He will get there.

Couple of games in and people are ready to hang him. What do they realistically expect from a new manager? Back to back wins with City'ish scores? This squad does not have the mentality, fitness, dedication and overall quality to do such things on short notice. Give the man some time for christ sake
We expect little improvements each game, but we are moving backwards so far. Still early, but not promising.

4-2-2-2 is a garbage formation.

Never rated Rangnick.

Conte is going to take Spurs to 4th place.

There's little doubt that Pogba will announce that he's speaking with other clubs during that coming transfer window. Don't bank on him helping out this team in shambles.

He's an interim coach. People need to calm down with their expectations. He and Carrick have got us to some sort of stability. The aim is top four. Then we hopefully get a really high quality manager.

I sense the CR tantrums is more in relation to his own performances and powers dwindling than that of those around him. Must be horrible for the body to give out before the mind.

Three years of dilapidation can't be repaired over night.
Yup.

And also people don't need to jump the gun with Rangnick and build him nor do they need to tear him down. He's here to stabilize us and build some foundations. If he can't do it well then whatever. We need a new permanent coach either way.

Hopefully these decisions are in sync with the next manager too as last thing we need is Rangnick ringing changes which don't transition well in the summer.

It's more than three.

Arguably the moment we lost to Barcelona in 2009* started this. Bloody Pep. SAF knew the writing was on the wall and didn't have enough time to evolve us again for the fight and we've been on the receiving end ever since. One last push for whatever he could grab after that, before he went, and I don't blame him but we've suffered ever since. The slow zombie football started around that time.

*Double arguably it crept in during the 1-0's we kept racking up on that record breaking run and the rot set in when we conceded that first goal to Blackburn and Roque fecking Santa Cruz.

I don’t know why but we are always looking a man short in midfield. It’s like 10 v 11 for many games except crystal palace first 30 mins.

I hope ralf address the basics and play simple approach to make players adapt to the formation. One improvement we all see is we are attempting some through balls from middle of pitch more often.

One obvious change is rashford but I’d like van de beek in place of bruno.

Nothing to do with Pep. SAFs football declined in his latter years as you'd expect for a man approaching his 80s (I think!?). But a good enough manager should have been able to transition us to the modern game which never happened.

To answer the thread question.
I absolutely rate Rangnick.
I have mentioned elsewhere. Though I would not have minded Conte, the mutants made the right decision to get Ralf.
He knows exactly how he wants the team to play. High press and quick passing football.
You need to be physically able to do that.
That is why lazy numpties like Martial are running away. And Pogba will follow suit.

As for Gary Neville and his comments.
Just shut the feck up Gary.

Football changed. As it always does.

We didn't.

Pep was the poison pill that everyone took.

We're paying the price for playing a game that doesn't exist anymore.

We're gonna be paying the price for it for a long time yet, just like Liverpool did when they didn't see the Prem coming.

Give us another 20 odd years, it'll come back to us hopefully.

Yes definitely.
He talks with clarity and understands the issue, so lets assume he’ll sort it out before we sack him

I agree with the rest. Just don't think one can pin it on Pep alone. The new generation was always going to be different as many many mangers have shown.

That's fair, I just think he's the convenient figurehead of the generation that we can point our anger towards. Really he was just the opening salvo of what this new football was gonna be like and our first taste of it was against them in 2009.

He’s an excellent coach. If the players won’t run for him and work for the team, then they’re the problem and will need to be benched and to move on if they don’t like it. A lot of our players are in horrible form hence we’re getting lots of individual errors. It’ll be an interesting season, hopefully we get top 4 and do some business in the January window.

We seriously lack technicality and tidiness with a lot of our players. Playing quickly and vertical can be lethal when players can still take care of the ball. But when you have Rashford stumbling over the ball on counter attacks and Bruno constantly playing misguided hoofs, along with a couple very mediocre passers of the ball behind them in Fred and McT, it turns into a lot of sloppiness because players aren't allowed to just hide and play the ball sideways.

I really like some of the stuff we have done in ball recovery and trapping teams high up the pitch, but we pretty much failed to capitalize every time because one of our own would feck up simple passes trying to break. Also it's clear as day that Maguire is quite terrible still, and struggles to play the high line we want to play.

He needs to bench a couple of senior players because it makes sense and to show his authority. Prime ones being Rashford and Bruno. Maybe give young and hungry players like Elanga a run. That should increase motivation in the squad.

The guy must've had about four training sessions, between covid outbreaks and a crazy compressed schedule. How on earth anyone is expecting to see any meaningful change, at this stage, is beyond me. This thread, and even the existence of a question about his value as a manager, at this early stage is really just peak modern fan nonsense. The football forum here has now reached truly unbearable levels. From the angry vitriol directed at the hate figure of the day....currently Rashford....to the abuse of coaches and assistants - despite no plausible way for anyone here to actually know what they do or how good they are at it - and now the questioning of a brand new manager, after 4 games during a crazy period and limited player availability..........I just can't see much hope or point in even engaging in this forum any more. It's worth it for the transfer tweets thread, the odd good gif, discussions on other clubs, and of course the general, which has always been a laugh.

I used to love the football forum here, but it just feels nothing except reactionary, angry, juvenile, and unrealistic these days. Like the match day thread gone viral throughout the sub-forum. Ugly.

We've just been played off the park Vs Norwich and Newcastle. We got 4 PTS but didn't really deserve any.

This isn't a new manager bounce. It's an absolute mess. He's still picking all the same players who everyone wanted dropped.
He’s asked our players to always pass forward and between the lines. You can see their brains working that extra split second as they aren’t used to it.

Sacchi at Milan took 10 games or so to start winning matches and then after they went onto win absolutely everything in the game. Klopp at Liverpool was probably worse than us at first also. Took him a year or two due to squad depth and just overall fitness / technical issues

The fact people believe we can change this side quickly into RR’s vision with all those wingers no midfielder option and 2 mid 30 year old strikers is laughable.

He came in for 6 months to improve the training and fitness. We may not see any results until later into the season. We need top 4 that’s it with this unbalanced squad so stop demanding a title charge.

The EPL has the highest pace of play in the world, itsa league where most teams have already adopted The "rock and roll" pressing style he brought to Germany. It's going to be very difficult to beat the best teams at the same things they want to do to us.

The squad needs overhaul, but half of them can be worked into a hard pressing team. Let's give them time to actually change things before we judge them.

We are not aiming for Vibes FC 2.0 ffs. This is going to take time. Also please remember what Rangnick said about picking up muscle injuries if the system is implemented too rapidly. This is a process one should trust. Sarcasm unintended.

Some people honestly think he could undo the teachings of Ole in 4 games with one game preparation being ripped apart by covid?

We played like this under Ole, its the players comfort blanket when the tough gets going, they resort to sideways and backwards passing because its easy to do and doesn't require an ounce of responsibility to be taken. Our captain himself is the main fecking culprit of it, so what chance do we have of anything progressive happening?!

These performances are ingrained into the players mindset, Rangnick is attempting to undo that and instill his workings but I'm afraid 6 months won't be enough.

Time to look at the players first and foremost instead of the manager, the lack of responsibility being taken in their individual performances is startling.

Eh? I thought everyone was accusing Ole of not being able to coach and was all about vibes and individual brilliance? If so there is then nothing to un-teach.

It’s the players and was under Ole too.

We’ve entrusted the completely wrong kind of players over and over. Cavani James Fred Bruno Herrera, we need more players with industry to make things happen for the more skilful ones. The balance is all wrong. We are still carrying far too many prima donnas. Getting out fought every second week is no fun.
I agree. Look at the 08 team - Rooney, Hargreaves, Tevez all played with industry as well as skill. Liverpool and city’s teams are full of workhorses too.

Hopefully Ralf can get this team working hard but my concern with Rangnick’s system is that it doesn’t value possession which is as big of a problem currently - we are so wasteful with the ball.

I cannot understand this 4222 bollocks. Too many players out of position. Zero width. Zero creativity. Zero defensive stability.

There’s a reason every top manager uses a variation of the 433.

How many formations have been tried?

How many player combinations have been tried?

There's one common denominator here - a bunch of show ponies and a bewildered captain

It's time to get rid of some players by either dropping or selling

If the players can't keep possession of the ball, pass the ball accurately and harrass and chase when out of possession what are they being paid to do?

Maguire has zero clue what's going on around him. Drop him

Really hate to agree but it’s clear. You can say Ole was not up to par, fair enough he wasn’t tactically. But you got a guy who is clearly an upgrade but the new manager bounce has been minimal. You can argue that players still need to adjust but everyone can see the body language is horrible and the physicality is sorely lacking. Talent wise this team is definitely top 4 but unfortunately we seem to be heading to another player churn.

I said this before - he is a coach that is more famous for bringing up the next best managers than exactly achieving or winning things with his clubs.

I really hope we skip extending his contract and utelise him on the board instead.

We will be in a battle for 6th spot before the penny drops with these players. Should have appointed a full time manager. Every other club who sacked their manager has but us. It's a joke.

Just toys being thrown now. Chelsea has had like 3 interim managers in the past decade. Famously, Hiddink. The point is to get to the summer when the very best managers are willing to switch if they are not free agents. It's not done just for fun.

Ralf is what we need at the moment, but long term, we should stick to our plan. Our players have been badly coached the past few years, so it will take some time, to see Ralf vision. Regardles, After the end of the season, we should get Pochettino. Ralf just needs to implement a proper footballing philosophy that relies on organized press and intricate passing, then Pochettino can come take over and take us back to where we should be,
