I'm surprised only one person has mentioned how he lost Ronaldo for his goal.

Overall he had a fantastic game, but at the top level it's these one moments that define games. He's still got some way to go before he's as good as some on here think he is, i.e. best RB in Prem/Europe/World/Top 3 etc.

He can make mistakes and still be all of those things. He isn't the best in the world granted but he's probably the best in the prem and one of the very best in Europe. How many good right backs actually exist for a start? Not many.

Ridiculous comment. If anything Vidic is more culpable than Rafael because he didn't get close enough on Higuain and let him cross.

Rafael's job isn't to react to the ball coming in after it's been hit, it was to cover and mark Ronaldo. He was out of position. He only missed the cross because he wasn't doing so and napping like he so often is when defending.

If he moved any deeper he would have ruined the line and played everybody onside.

The only way he could have stopped that was if he gambled and expected the shot to come in at that angle, but it happened so fast it just caught everybody by suprise.

As all good strikers do they made the gambling run in behind and got lucky.

The goal should have been stopped by preventing the cross - allowing the ball across like that is asking for danger. Never Rafaels fault.

I agree, what a fecking idiot...let's put it into context - it was only a matter of time before Real got their second goal, and they had plenty of time (extra time too). So to make Rafael culpable is stupid.

Complete nonsense mate. It was the perfect cross, Rafael is EXACTLY where he should be.

He was complete dogshit in the first leg and lost Ronaldo for the winning goal as well as giving away a pen (not given) in the second.

He has a chance to improve playing in Champions next season though. And will have a medal in May.

Arse will win that sixth place trophy.

How did he give it away if it wasn't given? fecking top logic fella. There was little distance between the Real player heading the ball and it hitting Rafa's arm. Granted he had a bad half in the 1st leg. That's about it.

If only we had jenkinson we would not have had to worry.

We would of been 10-0 down by that point.

He was bad in the first half, recovered pretty well in the second. As already mentioned, he didn't lose Ronaldo for the second goal. The entire team was shell shocked during that time.

Pen? When you saw that in real time, you thought it had hit Rafael's hand? Or was it after watching a 100 slow motion replays? It was a goal line save.

No shame in admitting that you were wrong in your earlier assessment of Rafael and that he has been excellent this season. Takes a bigger man.

Was awful in the first half of the first leg.

But it's complete bollocks to say he lost Ronaldo for the 2nd goal. It was a near perfect cut back by Higuain at a very good pace. Was very tough for Rafael to do something about it.

Also let's not forget his great work for the first goal scored by us.

You're calling me a fecking idiot? Great argument, well put. Completely necessary, that. I have a different opinion to you, wow.

This. You really don't know football if you think Rafael wasn't in the perfect position there.

Well, I do know football, I'm a coach.

If he was positioned so well, then he didn't react quickly enough. The cross was good, I agree, but he's completely flat footed.

For me, he isn't picking Ronaldo up properly in the first instance.

I'm not saying he's the reason we lost, but I was just surprised in amongst all the man love that nobody thought he made a blunder. This is not the first time this has happened either.

It was a terrific goal and a good cross which, yes, you can argue should have been cut out. I just think Rafael day dreams at key defensive moments. Several times he's been slow to react to rebounds.

Did nobody else think that Ronaldo was offside? I haven't managed to see a good replay yet but on my initial watching of it I thought that he was leaning forward to see the ball thus his head was offside. Happy to be proved wrong, just surprised nobody else thought it.

There's a real groupthink pressure on the Caf to pretend Rafael's ironed out all his defensive issues.

He really hasn't. He's a fantastic player but he still sells himself, still gets skinned, still gets in the wrong position.

One thing he has improved is that he hardly ever loses the ball in his own half anymore.

Wishful thinking. Everyone was behind the guy that crossed it from memory

True. But nothing like as often as in previous seasons. He's not the finished product by a long stretch, but he's getting there.

The bolded is spot on. Rafael has been at worst one of our top 2 performers this season. He's been the best RB in the league, comfortably.

He's having a good season. No surprise he still has some room to improve, but showing all the signs of doing so year on year.

Second best right back in the league this season (to Zabaleta).

Is Pete still claiming Rafael is a poor player?

God knows how he must rate Sagna then as Rafael is twice as good as him.

The only real time I have seen him get skinned this season was the first half v Madrid at the Bernabeu. Can you name a few others from this term?

His concentration is still a bit suspect and I think that is the main issues but it has certainly improved vastly. He switched off the other night for Ronaldo's goal but then the whole team did around the time of the sending off.

He is 22 and improving each season. He is a superb prospect and had his best season by far at the club. You yourself are selling him short with a few of your remarks.

He's become a massive asset, as a complete package, but he's not really that close to being a great defender I don't think.

He tried to dribble in his own box and got robbed on Tuesday.

In other news, all pigs like black sheep

Sagna's career looks shot due to injuries, he was the best RB in the league for about 4 years and was a better fullback than Rafael will ever be.

You didn't watch beyond half time?

Seriously what is the point of you on here anymore. I used to enjoy decent banter along with some constructive conversation with rival fans but seemingly the Caf has become a joke. Yourself and Dumbstar just come on making comments like "van Persie is a cnut", "Welbeck is shit", "Rafael is crap".

Why come on this forum? I would never see the need to go on a rival forum unless I genuinely wanted some varied debate and opinion from other fans. You clearly don't want that so I ask why are you here?

Your remarks make you look stupid or as if you have no understanding or knowledge of the game. Seriously, use your brain. There is nothing wrong with banter, we all like that, but I can't honestly remember the time where you engaged in some proper debate. I would go as far to say at the moment the only stand out non United poster is that EssexRob chap Chelsea fan.

Rafael has already blown by Sagna, who I agree with you once was a very good fullback. But to belittle Rafael now is says more about you, pete, than Rafael or Sagna.

Don't you ever get tired of making a fool of yourself?

He was in line with his other defenders, he can't drop deeper there cause that would be idiotic defending. Ronaldo ONLY JUST gets to the ball on the slide and stretch and he's 2 more yards than Rafael to get there. Just think about that.

At this moment you sound like an awful coach cause you don't know football if you think Rafael was at fault.
