When the Smalling was getting ready to come on, I thought it's Evans getting subbed off, thinking he got injured when he got dominated for their third goal.

Sir Alex never makes a first half sub. Even half time subs are vary rare. And I was surprised to see Rafael off.

That was more like a knee jerk reaction. We've always seen players getting frustrated on the pitch and getting booked. But instead of taking him off like that, he could've been allowed to continue until half time and give him a proper talk. And no, I don't think he was gonna get sent off before half time. He's not a crazy one like Ballotelli. A player who gives his all like him should've been given a chance.

He was having an off game (not the only one). Was on a yellow. Known for being rash. We needed more height and he's small.

I don't see why it wasn't the right thing to do.

Rafael is young got drive and has been great this season. Taking him off would have done him a world of good if he reacts in the right way. Youngsters need a kick up the arse as well as given leeway. He'll have a stormer against City.

I guess Fergie wanted a little more height to defend the set pieces hence the Smalling for Rafael change. Otherwise I don't see why you can't trust Rafael to play on a yellow card.

Right call to take him off and Fergie seems to have no issue with his little strop, water under the bridge.

FFS, it's like some of you become even more precious as the years go by. Fined for not shaking his manager's hand? Getting upset because he showed some disappointment at being subbed in the first half? Ridiculous.

The ones who thought Rafa needed the book thrown at him or some type of major punishment need to reevaluate themselves and their understanding of footballers behavior. Like the lad can't even be human. Just awful

It's the cafe mate you aren't allowed to be human

Harsh on Rafael
The substitution clearly was a combination of factors, poor game from Rafael vs McAnuff, poor game from CBs and GK in defending set-pieces, and risk of red card for this game and suspension against City

Although, I'll admit the last one is the least of his concerns, as although I 100% want Rafael to start against City, based on this game it's difficult not to expect Smalling to

Knew SAF didn't take him off because of the yellow. He's never done that before that early. Doesn't make sense to waste a sub for that reason either. Was a bit of a desperate measure to take him off. Scared of the set pieces. After the sub there wasn't very many balls to deal with.

If Rafael doesn't start vs City then I'm not sure how good our attack game is going to be. Young is not shit hot. Anderson won't be playing. We need him for the attacking game. Plus, Kolarov will most likely play as he's the only proper set pieces taker in their side that can deliver these kind of balls consistently.

Calling Rafael our best defender this season is the very definition of false praise, and he's clearly not a great defender.

In the interview I saw he said 'one of our best players' not 'best defenders'.

Aside though, I was touched by how when Rafael sat down, too fuming to realise he was about to freeze to death, Welbeck wrapped his coat round his legs for him, even though he didn't even notice.

I don't know if that was caring, professional, or he was told to do it, but it was nice to see.

I understood why he was taken off. We needed more height and since he was on a yellow, it was just too risky with us already shit at defending. Plus, we need him against City

Good decision by Sir Alex. He's done the same with several other players this season when they were on a yellow. It's not scapegoating, it's pro-active management.

Im glad he was upset about coming off, it shows a desire to play and to win, and it also shows when things are looking tough he wont run andhide.

 ffs you aren't serious there are you ? "Hey Danny, Rafa is cold, do something about it !"

He looks as if he's about to burst into tears.

Hooked after 30 mins against relegation fodder

You haven't posted in this thread since Sept 4th. In that time Rafael has gone about being one of the best rbs in the PL (I wouldn't go as far as saying he's the definitive best). He has a bad half an hour three months later, and you're back.

Well done.

You do realise that after going missing in this thread for 2 months, this makes you look a complete cock

Should have waited another game or 2.

At the weekend he was taken off moreso due of the failure of others. We couldn't defend set-pieces to save our lives which was no fault of Rafael who just takes a post, getting Smalling (our best available defender in the air) was essential. It was either Rafael or Evra that simply had to come off in SAF's eyes to get Smalling in. Evra was skipper, Rafael was on a yellow so SAF had no choice but to pull Rafael. IMO Evans, Rio, Carrick, Fletcher should all be apologising to Rafael, it was their collective fault that he was taken off.

Had Rafael not been on a yellow I think Evans might have been the one pulled, well he'd have been the one I'd have pulled anyway, but SAF thinks a little different to me, he probably just wanted a small lad for a big lad.

Storeys transition from a good poster to the next Dumbstar is complete. Embarrassing.

You guys get so easily riled up by what peterstorey says. He probably says it to get a rise out of all of you. Obviously Rafael is fast becoming one of the best in the league, not withstanding the fact that he always had the potential and it was just injuries/inexperience holding him back.

I mean bloody hell, you could even see it from that game in 08/09 when he came against Arsenal for G Nev, completely changed the game and scored a peach with his left foot.

About 15 posters have taken his troll-bait hook, line and sinker. It's obvious to anyone that watches him regularly he's one of the top 2 RB's in the league.

I thing in terms of the substitution it was the right thing to do. As with all things it was a harsh lesson, we wanted to win the game and it required a change. No doubt it hurt him but for the great good of the team i'm sure that he was happy that we have come away with the 3 points.

I'd guess Fergie was actually pleased with that reaction. Nothing like a self confident cocky player.
