He's not though. He's been our best player this season, our best defender and Evra is getting raped by Robson-Kanu on the right who is winning all the corners that Evans cant deal with.

Its a strange one because Rafael took that booking for the team because his winger had got into a dangerous position that could hurt us. McAnuff has crossed the ball 3 times. 6 times Shorey has crossed and thats what the problem is. Where was the help for Rafael when it was 2vs1? But Rafael took the booking to help the team.

If Evra had done that we wouldnt have conceeded as many. But because he's let him cross the ball 6 times in 1 half and beat him a bunch of times, he didnt pick up a yellow and wasnt taken off. But the team is the worse for it because we've conceeded so many

He's not been our best defender, that's been Evans who's also had a shocker tonight. As I've said any of the back 4 could have been taken off but as he was on a booking it was Rafael.

did he get hooked because fergie was worried about rafael getting a red or because he was shit?

because evans was directly responsible for 3 goals and if anything he should've been hooked first.

Calling Rafael our best defender this season is the very definition of false praise, and he's clearly not a great defender.

Compared to a lot of right backs out there, he's actually good defensively, but you're right, he's being made out to be a lot better than he is by others. He's merely a very promising right back who's good at the moment and has had a very good start to the season. Still has plenty of faults to his game.

The call was the right one and Rafael's reaction was poor. Main thing is when things calm down is that a) Rafael understands he can't do that again b) Even as important - Fergie doesn't drop him for this - he's been brilliant otherwise.

Oh ffs, why didn't you post here in last 20 games, he is our best player this season, let alone defender.

Definately got the hook because he was on a yellow and Fergie was worried about the referee playing to the crowd.

Van Persie has probably been our best player this season. Rafael has certainly been one of our better players but I wouldn't say he's been so good as to warrant being called our best.

Of course but that's a collective issue now, Rafael was on a booking and he had to be taken off when in reality anyone of the back 4 could've got pulled it's not rocket science.

Don't agree with that. Only Evans was poor. At least Evra had Young in front of him to help. Wasn't odd that McAnuff managed to get a cross from that position in the first goal. The other dangerous attacks that lead to goals came down our left.

He's been conceding a little over 1 foul per game this season. Like I said before, he can well manage to not get booked for the remainder of the 1st half and then cool of a little for 15 minutes. Was a bit of a desperate move from SAF. Tbh, the coaching staff doesn't have the answers to our defending set pieces problem.

We'll know it better after the match.

We did look much solid on the wings after Smalling's introduction. Rafael's been brilliant and probably our best player this season but Fergie made the right call.

If they don't who does? Who decides who is going to mark who, the tea lady? SAF was bang on in bringing off Rafael.

I just hope Fergie doesn't bench him for the City game because he has been brilliant for the whole season up until today.

Bloody hell, can't agree with that at all, he's been fantastic so far this season.

Everybody behaved fine. SAF took him off because we needed height and reinforcements in the middle and he was the one on the yellow card.

Rafael, who has been playing well in other matches and wasn't the worst today, thought he could keep playing - good, he's supposed to believe he's the best man for the job, especially when the team's under the cosh. We tried to get a warm jacket on him, failed first time. Welbeck finished the job.

Nothing wrong with any of it.

Now that Smalling and Jones are fit again i can see them both getting chances at right back. I hope not

Van Persie has probably been our best player this season. Rafael has certainly been one of our better players but I wouldn't say he's been so good as to warrant being called our best.

van Persie had few games where he was quite poor, and few of average games, Rafael was one of our best players in 90% of our games this season.

I thought he was made a scapegoat for others' mistakes in defence, just because he was on a yellow. Evra and Evans were shocking and they should have been taken off instead.

If you have a player who is on a yellow, in a team which have put in a poor defensive display, and he is known for sometimes being rash, then the natural thing to do is to take him off. Had he stayed on and been sent off, which wasn't actually too unlikely, then people wouldn't blamed Fergie for not taking him off.

Its clear the yellow card was the reason for the decision if the same decision had been made a couple of years ago we would have been playing in another champions league final and probably winning it as well.

As I said in the match day thread I would much prefer to see a player unhappy at coming off it shows they care no problem imo.

not worried about rafael blanking fergie and walking past albie....ronnie's done the same before with no visible reprecussions.

Not sure Rafael's ability has earned the blind eye that has been turned to the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney and Cantona etc in the past.

We won the game and barely looked like conceding after the sub. The right decision was clearly made.

If it's true and he blanked the boss, who was fully justified in subbing him, then he needs to be taught a lesson and get dropped/fined. Very very unprofessional if true.

"What reaction? (not shaking your hand) Oh that's nothing. Boy was disappointed. He's been one of our best players all season."

Right answer and let's fecking move on from this thing. It was a right decision also.

Fergie didn't seem too upset about it in the post-match interview. He was asked about it and said ''He was upset, he's been one of our best players this season.''

To be fair, Rafael should have been booked a number of times prior to his booking. SAF was right taking him off to protect him and the team.

I liked his reaction, kind of, he showed he gave a feck which I couldn't see and don't see often enough from United players. He was unlucky the McAnuff's diving antics got him trouble but he'll learn.

It's not about scapegoats, it's about doing what's right for the team. Rafael didn't deserve to be subbed for his performance, but yellow and our problem with high balls meant it was the right call.

Thank God, I hope this means he will start against city.
