Radamel Falcao | Ducker: Medical passed!

My only point was that no-one has a world class player on the bench despite all the rhetoric by managers/directors of football at the top clubs. It just doesn't happen. Turns out you can maybe argue that's true of Bayern/Gotze but then he can play in any of 6 positions - and that's something he did last year to get the necessary game time. I don't think anyone would argue any of the others are "world class" by any definition and that includes those at City.

For the most part the reason they have expensive benches is mainly because of the players' age, potential and long-term contribution to the squad. They're brought in as squad players with the potential to challenge for the first team. City are different, they buy the likes of Navas, Negredo and Fernando - squad players capable of becoming first team players, but none of them would have expected to walk straight into the team. That's different to what's going on here. We've just bought another world class player, in his prime, to either stick on the bench or bench one of the few world class players we have in the squad.

Basically, the Falcao/Rooney/van Persie issue is something unique to our club and I personally think it's an absurd signing. I don't think it's a van Gaal signing and don't expect him to work miracles at all. The club has brought in some very good players which will bolster the squad considerably and I'm more than happy with how things have went on the whole. I just think this particular signing is the wrong one.

I believe it is a Van Gaal signing. If it isn't don't expect to see Falcao play much over Rooney or RvP.

And I'm guessing if one were to know the long-term (or even short term) plans of the club it would probably make more sense.

We don't really know what LvG's plans are for Rooney's position. We don't really know if RvP needs work done. We don't really know what formation is LvG's long-term target for us. We don't know who is planned on being sold in the coming year. We don't know what deals for defenders and midfielders are being discussed at the club for this window - let alone January or next summer.

So yeah, at the end of the day, it's a world class player being added to our squad. I'd just enjoy what he brings and let the people in control of the club worry about balancing the squad.

Must be very exciting getting Di Maria and Falcao in one week. The last time i got this level of excitment over signings was when we got Schmeichel (oh what a day it was, half of Lisbon was euphoric and Jardel, before the coke phase). Amazing work by Woodward. Not only he sold Bébé, he´s done very well in the transfer market.

If he could do that he can do anything.

We sold Pete to you guys too early

Welbeck's a long-term solution. Falcao isn't. di Maria replacing Nani isn't sacrificing the long term for the short term, so that's fine. Sacrificing Welbeck for Falcao will mean that we'll only have Wilson for the long term along with the headache of managing Rooney, van Persie, and Falcao all together (unless van Persie leaves the club in the next window).

This kind of logic is why we are close to Spurs than Bayern. Fact.

From what I've read it doesn't sound like we have any plan?

Basically Mendes just rang last night and said Falcao is available and here we are. It's called impulse buying.

Fantastic deal! Was the best Centre forward in World Football 12 months ago.
So whats the deal with a permanent move? Do we have first Option and for how much?
And what's the hold up with Blind?

There was a rumour early this morning that we are holding off on the Blind announcement as we had another lined up and wanted to announce them together.

We are paying £5-6m for Falcao for this year with yes an eye to sign him long term. Blind and Falcao are supposed to arrive today at Carrington to undergo their medicals. Not sure about the permanent fee for Falcao.

Guess this means we won't be going 4-3-3 any time soon? 4-3-1-2 or 3-5-2 would seem to be essential given how top loaded we are with quality.

We have a commitment to buy, I don't know why this is being ignored like we are going to send him packing next summer.

Also our offices are in London aren't they? That should explain the plane destination for the flight stalkers.

Falcao's 28 and has recently recovered from a long-term knee injury. Yes, he looks fit and sharp at this moment, but can we be certain that he can keep himself fit for a long time?

Plus, we now have 1 striker who's entered his 30's and two strikers who are entering their 30's. Our only long-term solution (assuming that Welbeck leaves) is Wilson. In the long term, we'll have a problem replacing our 3 established forwards. Welbeck and Wilson would have been good replacements for those three, but with Welbeck leaving, we'll have to find a good replacement elsewhere.

Re: ages

Signing Falcao wouldn't be a huge change to our overall age profile but him and Di Maria are both in their prime as footballers. Which is an age category where we've been a bit deficient in recent years. Lots of players heading towards the end of their careers, mixed with young 'uns who are still a little bit undercooked. Our two latest signings should be playing the best football of their life over the next 2-3 years. Which is not something you could say about many players in our squad before this summer.

Re: Welbeck

I really hope he gets a loan deal, with a view to coming back to United in another year or two.

No, thats never happened with us, ever :nervous:

Question - does anyone have a list of players we have loaned in over the past few years? Struggling to think of any

I want to be honest. This transfer annoys me because he's one of the top three strikers in the world and we've signed him. Why couldn't we get a midfielder of this quality?

Tevez was a very different situation given his 3rd party ownership. The loan here is because Monaco want the bulk payment in 2015 to balance their FFP situation apparently.

I'm also hoping its because we want to properly asses what levels he's able to play at after his injury.
