You cant possibly be serious?I lack the cultural context...what is that gesture meant to imply in connection with Asian people?

Yeah, now when you Google it you can find some naming her - Cecilia Salvai. That's good. Many still say along the lines of 'showing a player'. But it's good that others now say that it was Cecilia Salvai that's performed the racist impression. Hopefully she'll be punished individually, as she should be, and held to account for her actions - rather than just Juventus, the club, apologising and that being the end of it. Or just the social media person being held to account for their part.Several articles name her.

Misogyny?
She's guilty of doing a blatantly racist impression and yet is escaping having her name branded everywhere by the media as the one guilty of racism. That's misogyny?
I think the suggestion was that she wasn't being named to protect her from misogynistic abuse, not that the act of naming her would be misogyny. Which is silly, she did a racist gesture and should be forced to come out and apologise.Misogyny is prejudice against women. This is the opposite of that.
If anything it would be misandry.
What the feck.It was this
Still no personal apology from her? WowShe hasn't apologized since that tweet yet as far as i know. She should be punished accordingly.

In reality, the reason her name wasn't plastered everywhere was probably because most didn't know who it was, and they couldn't be bothered to find out.

The initial point got expanded more in a later post and I think it was more about how being a lot more discreet and less brutal about a female player, could be seen as the 'women must be protected more than men' attitude - which gets interpreted as Misogyny rather than a benefit.I think the suggestion was that she wasn't being named to protect her from misogynistic abuse, not that the act of naming her would be misogyny. The issue is that racism towards Asians isn't taken seriously. But it's nice to see a lot of people standing up against it in this thread.
No racial undertones meant - but are probably aware of certain boundaries with other races or groups. The issue is that your consideration is only extended so far.

I'd say it's more a lack of education. This is clearly nonsense and a poor choice of words by the club.
Without racial undertones, she doesn't do that pose. The very joke she's making is based on race.
By pulling your eyes like that it makes them look more asian. Japanese/chinese/koreans are known to have eyes that are shaped differently. Some people used to use this gesture to be hateful or take the piss out of somebody. Why can't I be serious? I don't know what it implies and would appreciate an explanation.
100%
I'd say it's more a lack of education.
Do you honestly think they've taken that photo to take the piss or be abusive? I don't. They're obviously on some sort of pre season in Asia? she's wearing the hat and mimicking being Asian.
I'd say she thinks it's just trying to fit in and be like "hey look im asian too" - but obviously people can find it offensive and she should have been advised it's a terrible idea.
I'd be surprised if the gesture had any sort of hateful reasons behind it though. It seems Italy needs a big relook at how they educate on racial issues.
That's 100% what I meant. In an equal world, she would have been named by the club in their apology, but men and women, especially white women, are treated very differently. The initial point got expanded more in a later post and I think it was more about how being a lot more discreet and less brutal about a female player, could be seen as the 'women must be protected more than men' attitude - which gets interpreted as Misogyny rather than a benefit.
Whereas, as Sparx99 says, more brutally and aggressively going after male players who do something like this than female players could just as easily be described as misandry.
I think Halftrack makes a valid point that ignorance over the female players name maybe played a part in it. But it was a big story, and she's an Italian international playing for the team who won the Italian league, so I'm fairly certain it wouldn't have been that difficult to find out had they wanted to - which they damn well should have done given she was the one doing the blatant racism.
But I think the fact the term 'Misogyny' is even being debated here already, and the fact fears about 'misogynistic abuse' against the racist might happen, highlights the difference in reporting negatively on female players than on male players. The latter is seen as part and parcel of the job, that you'll get good and bad attention in the press. The former is immediately open to the accusation of misogynism and so (male) reporters are more likely to steer clear of it and be far less ruthless against female players even with racist incidents like this.
I'd say it's more a lack of education.

I'd hope to think it's more niavety. Some people just don't understand why it could be offensive unfortunately. What do you think the term 'racial undertones' actually means?

If some people can't understand that mocking or"mimicking" someone because of a genetic anomaly, that's not niavety, it's a lack of compassion and empathy. Everyone has seen bullying of one sort of another, no one thinks it's a kind thing to do.I'd hope to think it's more niavety. Italy stinks of racism tbh especially to orientals I‘ve noticed
I have a few Filipino friends in Milan and they are racially abused there on the daily.
Watch this incident brushed under the carpet.
Disgraceful from Juventus FC
You try to sound very empathetic but you call it genetic anomaly. I think Asian eyes are perfectly normal, that’s why I have trouble to understand why it’s offensive. I agrer it’s rude and inconsiderate but I wouldn’t feel offended if someone pointed out my very normal physical characteristics. I would feel offended if someone called it anomaly. If some people can't understand that mocking or"mimicking" someone because of a genetic anomaly, that's not niavety, it's a lack of compassion and empathy. It has no traction in the wider social media world. It doesn't help that its buried under the massive Messi and Olympic focus. It is already i think.
As you say Asian eyes are perfectly normal, but when you're the 1 lone Asian in a room of 30 Europeans you're the odd one out.You try to sound very empathetic but you call it genetic anomaly. You can say odd one out or special one one getting more attention. Maybe idiots will mock the one Asian but I can’t see it in my circles. But I know a Vietnamese girl who is always mocking other Asian’s eye shape. Is she racist? And I also know one from Hong Kong who got super offended when I asked her about the Chinese century eggs but she’s fine saying Hungarian food is disgusting. As you say Asian eyes are perfectly normal, but when you're the 1 lone Asian in a room of 30 Europeans you're the odd one out.
For some reason humans seem to pick on anything that is 'unusual'. People with red hair get the same treatment for some reason.

That's a very good point, and the differing responses to each situation are also relevant. As you say Asian eyes are perfectly normal, but when you're the 1 lone Asian in a room of 30 Europeans you're the odd one out.
