Pundits during Euro 2024

Enjoyed Andros Townsend on commentary. At least 150 times better than his namesake, Andy Townsend

Spare a thought for us in the USA. We have fox coverage.

Just watched the Belgium coverage with Jaqui Oatley and Warren Barton. Oatley knows the game well enough but has the most shrill voice. Barton is just a complete numpty.

Back at the studio we have Jules Breach, Ari Hingst, Stu Holden, and Alexi Lalas. A team genetically engineered for their punditry incompetence.

occasionally we get Peter Schmeichel, who talks a lot of bollocks, and have super hip Daniel Sturridge popping in from time to time. If it’s a really big game they wheel out Chiellini who can’t help but say “is good, is good” every half sentence.

The TV is essentially on mute most of the time.

Cor those of you unaware, Fox is universally reviled for their big tournament coverage. We thought the nadir was the Qatar World Cup, but they’ve learned no lessons from that, and arguably made it even worse

I cheated and used a VPN and watched the BBC, Fox is dreadful as are ESPN and CBS, NBC are tolderable but not by much!

I need to figure that out too. I like watching on the big TV though, so are you using a router based vpn, or through your computer?

Computer - though if you can cast to your big screen that would work

Two Sligo bucks on RTE 2 for Slovakia v. Belgium. Eames and Cawley

is it an age thing?

Years ago I used to watch the build up, the half time and the post match nonsense.

but came to realise that it is just that…nonsense.

The same questions. The same answers. The same hyperbole. The same criticism.

I’ve learnt to switch off and just tune in for the game.

anyone with suggestions how to have a background noise without commentary…I can’t stand guy mowbry and Jenas…and I’m sure there are more
Yeah, that's pretty much what I have to do nowadays as well.

I find most of the way it's all presented - pundits, commentary and all the filler segments - very annoyingly and I'm more inclined to not bother watching if I have to sit through all of that as well. So I definitely skip all the studio parts, and I'm even watching some of the games on mute!

The age thing I think is relevant - but mainly because more and more things are increasingly aiming / changing everything to appeal to a 'new / younger audience' and demographics that's pretty much everything that I'm not. So it's hardly any surprise that they appeal to me far less than they did, as that seems to be the ever increasing intent.

And back in the day there weren't a zillion TV channels, mobile phones and the internet to distract you

The female commentator was very good a couple of days back, was slagging off McCoist throughout. Aluko is terrible, she's not as intelligent as she thinks she is. I've liked Fabregas. Dislike Lineker and Shearer a lot more now after their behaviour in the FA Cup final. Keane, Wright and Neville a good watch as usual. Ferdinand just behaves like one of them fan channels.

I've been watching games all across a number of channels in the past weeks, and gotta say that the host nation has by the far the worst commentators for my taste so far. I'd kill to have commentary like right now with the BBC in the Turkey vs. Georgia game.

German TV broadcasts of the Euro are divided between three channels: ARD, ZDF as the two public channels, and RTL as the privately owned one. So there is quite an array of commentators between those three channels. RTL has by far the best main commentator of the three, Wolff-Christoph Fuss has been an established and frequent football commentator for many years now.

ARD could do a lot better than what they've got in Chistina Graf. I mean, she's not completely awful, on the pure business side of things she generally knows her stuff and she's noticably got some experience commentating. But she's been utterly boring to listen to. Not a shred of excitement and passion coming across. The game between Spain and Croatia that she reported on was probably one of the most despirited and boring affairs, commenting-wise, that I've watched in a long time. That wasn't her fault alone, her co-commentator Thomas Broich was even worse than her if anything. Together they were completely unbearable, not a hint of chemistry between them, constant awkward pauses where neither seemed to know what to say, when they talked it was mostly lame general items, and overall both just gave the impression that they'd rather be anywhere and do anything than be there and report on that game. Might have just been a bad day for her, because I've clearly seen her have better gamedays than that one, or it was really just that she hated her colleague and couldn't get into the match while next to him.

The worst, by far, is the ZDF's Claudia Neumann. She's been critisized for being not only boring to listen to, but outright incompetent both in terms of game knowledge and professional commentating technique, in her football game reporting for many years now. Somehow ZDF has been holding onto her as their main commentator. Her commentary is utterly soulless, her game knowledge fragmentary at best factoids and statistics strewn in almost entirely randomly whenever she feels like it, with no relation to what's happening on the pitch.

I can't stand female commentators. Don't mind them doing pre game half time or full time analysis, but when I am watching a game , it's not for me it's like fingernails on a chalkboard

I think the punditry is a sign of the times, a lot of people just watch matches at home on their own now, so the role of the pundits is to create a bit of blokey camaraderie. It’s a bit sad but it is what it is.

Alright Joey, calm down.

Guy Mowbray is a brilliant commentator. Just has a good voice for it, unlike Matterface who ITV have decided for some unfathomable reason is an appropriate replacement for Clive Tyldesley.

Did Rio really ask Cesc if he played with better players than Bellingham?

Enjoying listening to Lampard on iPlayer right now. Really interesting thoughts on Bellingham and the midfield.
He said he would play Mainoo as feels he is ready and has the tools.

If you have a VPN you should be able to watch ITV or BBC iplayer for free. I'm in the US as well but Fox is just unwatchable for me, makes my ears bleed. Not that BBC or ITV are good (far from it) but for sure better than Fox.

Yeah he's right. I'm surprised he didn't say Gallagher after managing him at Chelsea (and talking about how Makalele and Essien were important support for him) but I'd agree, I think Mainoo or Wharton is the missing piece.

Was also interesting what he said about Bellingham potentially playing deeper alongside Rice. He said he (Lampard) was able to score goals from that position because firstly he had Makélélé covering him, but also because he was older and more experienced, so knew when to make the runs into the box – and when not to. He said that because Bellingham is still young, it is expecting too much of him to be able to play deeper and still have that impact/goal threat, That was when he said he would pick Mainoo to play alongside Rice.

Pien Meulensteen.

The BBC lads getting their knickers in a twist over Ten Hags comments about Southgate and Micah Richards accusing him of disrespect is pretty funny.

Although those feckin dweebs will be jumping on any sign of weakness next season, no doubt.

Were the comments they made to ten Hag after we won the FA Cup not disrespectful?

a lot of the times pundits don’t have to have the most knowledge or have the most credibility just be the loudest. They were talking the other night about England and foden fabregas (someone who has won nearly every thing the game and played his positions) was explaining what he should do but was being corrected by Richards (Richard’s is loud and fed his info - entertaining yes but know your place) you could see in fabregas face he was annoyed. Shearer not being on punditry is missed big time for bbc!!

Give it time and you'll see influencers like Speed and Chunkz doing the punditry.
Funny. I was just thinking this afternoon how much the term "influencer" grates and annoys me. Who are these nobodies and which idiots are they influencing? Whenever I hear of someone being referred to as an influencer it is invariably someone I have never heard of and I hope and pray it stays that way!
